So Sopranos cancels our show (Soul Shakers) three days before the gig (this Saturday).

It's affecting other bands too. This is from Paul @ Sopranos today:

From PauL:

These shows are canceled:

Saturday, June 6th
Saturday, June 13th
Saturday, June 27th
Saturday, July 11th
Saturday, July 18th

Shows that were scheduled outside of our regular karaoke hours are not affected.

We apologize for the short notice for some of you, and for the inconvenience. I AM willing to look at compensation for out-of-pocket expenses for shows canceled, but bearing in mind that we will resume live shows in the fall and will re-book those bumped, and we will also look at shows both outside of our regular karaoke hours, and shows on Sunday through Thursday, but without a guaranteed payment (ie. play-for-door will be considered).

I think that Brian, the owner, asked Paul to stop with the live shows through the summer months. I do know that Brian has been unhappy with the bar sales during many of the live shows that we have hosted recently, and that ultimately affects his bottom line. I have also heard that when Brian agreed to allow, there had been a hiatus on it for quite some time, that there was supposed to be only one show per month. I've also heard some stories around the bar about the last couple of shows not going over too well (trouble finding a sound guy, sound not being good, poorer than expected turn out, etc.).

I think it's really shitty that you guys got your show cancelled on such short notice, though it appears that Paul is being reasonable out it and offering to compensate for out of pocket expenses. He could have, though being a good guy wouldn't have, said, "The owner has pulled the plug on live music at Soprano's and your shows have been cancelled." and left it at that.

I really like the Soul Shakers though, so this really bums me out. Post up any other shows that you have comming up through the summer though, and the wife and I will definately make every effort to come out for the fun.

This place is a shitter of a live venue. Shit sound, shit layout, and the bands that (attempt) to play there are treated like shit. As are certain awesome Italian karaoke customers.

I think that V lounge should pick up the scraps that Shitpranos drops. Far better venue. - Wed, 3 Jun 2009 4:09pm

Don't book anything at Sopranos. I booked my birthday party there (reserved seats) and was told that there would be a show going on but since I was going to pay for booze and food for everyone and I booked it as birthday party, I wouldn't have to pay the cover charge as long as I told them I was "Michelle the birthday girl". I get there on my birthday and they have no idea about the reservations, none of the food I ordered or the seats I reserved were set up and they wanted me to pay a cover charge.

They can't even get table reservations right, much less a live show. - Wed, 3 Jun 2009 6:14pm

The crappy thing about this sort of half-assed booking practice is that we were offered to headline the Oak Bay Bay party, but turned it down because we had already booked into Sopranos and wanted to honour our commitment.

I would be pretty reluctant to play Sopranos again. - Wed, 3 Jun 2009 6:14pm

I think that a big part of the problem, with the bands thing anyways, is that Paul is typically given a free hand to book bands, run promotions, host contests, etc., yet Brian, the owner, is not adverse to stepping in when he feels that these things are not generating enough revenue. I'm speculating that this is what has happenned in this scenario but it would have been better, in a dealing with the bands sense, for Brian to have Paul honour the shows that were already booked and then refrain from booking additional shows.

As far as the place as a venue, I think that it has serious potential. The sound system definately needs an upgrade, but the room is fairly good for live music. I think that it would be cool to book some bands in there on a Sunday night, it does have the benefit of being one of only 3 bars in town that has a license to stay open until 2 on Sundays.

um........BINGO?

Brian should be tarred and feathered if bottom line concerns were indeed the excuse to cancel on three days' notice.

cueing "well if I" in 3.....2.....1......

Well if I was running the fucking place I wouldn't think twice about sucking it up and taking another hit on the bottom line by honouring prior commitments, unless if the gig was still a month away, which I suppose raises the further question - where exactly would one draw the line between sufficient and short notice? - Wed, 3 Jun 2009 7:46pm

Shows usually need at least a month advance to be well promoted and organized, so if a band gets dropped on their ass within three days, they are pretty screwed to find shows to compensate for their loss given that other venues have allready gotten their shit together at least a month in advance. - Wed, 3 Jun 2009 7:50pm

Y'know when my band last played soprano's there was a packed house; and you cant honestly say that money wasn't made. There has to be some backroom dealings; simply because I dont know of and cant think of ANY business who cant make money off a packed house. UNLESS, that particular business is being run worse than the washrooms at monty's... and thats saying ALOT. - Sat, 6 Jun 2009 3:23pm

Jl, we havve trouble making money off a packed house b/c, to the best of my knowledge, Paul makes arrangements to pay the band(s) a set ammount. From that ammount the door price is determined to cover the cost. As an example, when we had Dismember, Augury and UTA the door price was $25. We were over capacity that night and still made dick all on bar sales (less than $1000 total from 9-2). That is what I believe the reason is that Paul's e-mail says that when live music resumes it will be play for door.

I think the out of house promoter was in charge band gaurantees for that show.

And I have a hard time beleiving that the 200 or so people at the show all spent less than $5 on alcohol.. That just does not compute! I spent more than that and I had drink tickets. - Sun, 7 Jun 2009 12:30pm Edited: Sun, 7 Jun 2009 12:31pm

Mike may be right about the out of house promoter, but there werw a lot of people at that show either not drinking, or drinking out in the parking lot. I think that another part of the prblem with that show, money wise that is b/c the show kicked ass, is that there was just a regular Saturday drink special (cheap L.I. iced tea) and full price beer.

I waited in the bar line up for no less than 3 minutes each time I went up to get a drink on the night of the Dismember show. I walked out of there with a decent buzz on which means I went up to the bar at least 6 times.
It seems to me either someone is skimming the till at Sopranos, or the management is unable to count or use a calculator and should think about investing in an abacus or an accountant that is not crooked. - Sun, 7 Jun 2009 1:43pm

90% of the clubs/pubs I do shows with usually just want one thing out of me for putting on a show- Liquor sales. I find it hard to believe that Sopranos can't make liquor sales because no other bar has ever complained that no one drank enough to make shows worth the while.

Personally when I have been to Sopranos, the service to get a beer is slow...or perhaps I'm just too anxious for my beer.

It's' entirely possible, I would say likely, that Brian understated the actual ammount of the liquor sales to me. I remember the lines at the bar that night did seem kinda long. I think that Brian's problem with that particular show was the type of music (he didn't seem to bad when UTA was on, but you shoulda seen his face when Dismember started playing). I think that part of the problem also is that Brian has never had another venue that did live music before and maybe the reality of live shows are not living up to his expectations. I don't know. I just know that it sucks that we're having a hiatus on live music and I think that cancelling shows that were already booked is also lame. That being said, I invite all of you to come down and drink with me at Soprano's on a Sunday night. I'll be the bald guy in the DJ booth with all of the empty sleves on the table behind me.

UTA - local yokels absolutely floored to be on that bill

Dismember - International touring band, at that time one show from celebrating their 20th anniversary, probably wondering what in goat's name they were doing in this rinky dink town 4600 miles from home, playing for that (by their standards) tiny crowd. - Tue, 9 Jun 2009 8:13pm Edited: Tue, 9 Jun 2009 8:40pm

No, Brian doesn't have to skim, he makes a pretty good profit off of the bar as is. He had left by about one that evening anyway. From what I can tell from my dealings with him as an employee, Brian is a stand up guy, he even helped me and the fiancee out financially last spring when we were having some difficulties. I think that if he were to step in and run the bar himself, it would probably be a much nicer place.
