Hey folks - So I am entrenched in a battle w/ a local city bylaw officer.

My van is parked on my rental property, unlicensed & uninsured and I got a notice that it will be towed away within 14 days [2 more days and counting] unless I ghet it Licensed & Insured.

At first, I figured I could go through ICBC and get Storage Insurance for Vehicles off the road, I got this reply.

"Dear Paul Smith,

The van in question is required to have a valid license plate with a
valid decal on it in order to be parked where it's at. Not storage
insurance.

The vehicle must be operational.

The owner of the property is our point of contact, and has been provided
with a copy of the Property Maintenance Bylaw which outlines our
authority to remove the vehicle or other items for non compliance.

Please be advised that this office will only communicate with the legal
registered property owner for any other communications.

Earl Garner
Bylaw Enforcement Officer
City of Victoria"

Now - I need possible solutions, and there aren't many that I can think of. I cannot licence & insure it [i do not have a drivers licence]

Anyone ever have this problem? how did you resolve it.

the only thing i can think of is find someone with a backyard or empty garage that I could move it to until I figure this shit out.

It runs just fine etc. - Thu, 28 May 2009 3:09pm

Put it up on blocks. I'd like to see them try to tow it then.

Seriously though, it sounds like some communication with your landlord might help. - Thu, 28 May 2009 5:10pm

I've had the exact same problem. The story I got was that you are not allowed to store vehicles on a rental property. They must be insured for reasons to do with the rentals home insurance( fires etc). I think it is basically up to the landlord whether or not they enforce it. Sounds like you got narc'd. Anyways... I got fucked over as well. - Thu, 28 May 2009 5:25pm

You need to offer someone CASH to store it. Once you mention money, people will come out of the woodwork to help you. - Thu, 28 May 2009 8:35pm

invest in a car tent... then its technically a covered parking space; regardless of the insurance, they would have to come onto your property and go inside the locked tent; which could be considered a breach of privacy let alone breaking and entering without your permission lol. As my landlord had informed me about this EXACT situation; is because it was not a covered parking spot and it was out in the open, there was a change in the law to not allow un-insured cars for storage in an uncovered parking lot(this was for an apt. building too; so im not sure if its the same for a house). - Fri, 29 May 2009 1:51pm

pauly has a van that runs? We gotta get a group to rally that thing up to seattle for some shows this summer. The 10 bands for 10$ tour looks insane. - Fri, 29 May 2009 7:04pm

ive thought about a covered parking tent, but my landlord didnt seem too enthused. I have had open communication w/ my landlords, but they are Chinese w/ english as a second language, and it is very tough for me to understand what in fact they are saying to me & i do not interpret sign language very well, which they are very prone to use.

Jordan - yes I have a van, if you wanna throw some insurance on the bitch it would A. alleviate my probs and B. facilitate our road trip...just a thought, haha.

Keith - take that back, by van isn't shitty

Still working on solutions, but surprisingly, Livevic has yet again been pretty much the most helpful, haha - Mon, 1 Jun 2009 8:03am

pauly/keith, we will have to talk about this soon. I am pretty sure it can be insured for a couple days for pretty cheap. A couple people pitch in and we'd be good to go. - Mon, 1 Jun 2009 2:09pm
