Chris Murray had his video taken off of the " banned and censored portion " of the Vancouver date of the
Indie Music Video Festival
(www.imvf.com ) at the last minute.

Organizers say it was just too graphic and in bad taste even for the banned and censored portion.
-no news if Chris's disturbing video for the song "switchblade to soul" will be played on future dates.

Utter Shit. Shocking for shocking's sake, why, he's not even using an actual switchblade. Might be more tolerable if the song was any good but, hey, it's Chris Murray, the most overrated white ska icon in Canada. Boring song, dumb video. Next. - Sat, 20 Sep 2003 11:56am

Disturbing vid to say the least..and from such a Canadian Ska Icon! Ha!
Murray's type of rock steady ska rip off always seemed so gentle to me, all love and harmony a la 1962..in fact I have shared a couple of bills with the guy and he always seemed so quiet....I guess the freaks always are ..
And just for the record ..I totally agree with ZipGunn..the dude is completly over rated..puts me to sleep actually zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I think someone has to stand up for chris here, go listen to some of his collarborations with the steady ups, or slackers and tell me he is overated, have you even heard him with his combo? it's fucking amazing. Not only that he is a really nice guy. - Tue, 23 Sep 2003 11:21am

Jesus. King Bong putting down Chris Murray. That's kind of like Kenny G calling Miles davis overrated isn't it?

Actually, I think the video is pretty weak, not too much substance, or artistic merit. In my opinion I think that it's not the greatest representation of him or his music - but than again we're all desensitized assholes. - Tue, 23 Sep 2003 1:00pm

I have played several bills with Chris, both when he was with King A and at Ska fest #1 where a number of us "local" ska bands opened for him.
As far as the "monkey idiot"..for a loser, (who plays in what band?),and could'nt find his ass with both hands in the dark, you have a lot of opinions. What the fuck do you know..as usual nothing... I, on the other hand, having played on bills with most of the ska royality in North America can comment far better than your punk ass will ever be able too, oh and Bong had 300 people at Steamers last Friday night..HA!
And for the record, I said he was over rated ..I never said he was no good ..big difference..the Slackers are AMAZING, Murray will never be that good, EVER, the fact that they threw him a bone and worked with him is the best lucky break he will ever get!
Go ahead Monkey boy show us what a dick ya are....see ya when I open for The Mad Bomber Society!

King Bong didn't play the first ska fest. You didn't play the first skafest.

And it should be noted that it doesn't take much to get 300 people into steamers on a Friday night.

ok...i fucking love chris murray. king ap is one of my all time fav's, and i think most of his solo stuff is incredible...BUT.. i gotta call a spade a spade here. this song is weak, and the video...well bites pretty hard. although on the bright side...you could play a drinking game to the song..and take a swig everytime he says switchblade....just a thought. - Tue, 23 Sep 2003 10:15pm

Maybe the reason the slackers are so amazing (which they are) is because they are a band full of talented musicians. Chris Murray is only one person, of course a man and a guitar isn't going to sound as good as a full band. However if you have heard some of the shit that Chris murray has done for other musicians ( I can't wait - Hepcat etc.) you will find that his shit is up there ( I am not about to debate who is better hepcat or the slackers cause they are both amazing in their own ways). One thing a really want to know is why this king bong guy is always going off on how many people he can pack into steamers or how many great bands he's played with (of course he's played with lots of bands, he's like 50). maybe he has a small penis or something? anyways I will be at the mbs show but it sure as hell won't be to see king bong! - Tue, 23 Sep 2003 10:28pm

Say what you want about Kataklysm, facts are that vid kicks ass, I think the vocals are fine, but put all that aside, I'd love to see you post a video that is not metal- that has 1/2 of anything on shadows and dust.
Something tells me that ska lacks the intensity to make a slay ass video, so If Im' wrong let's see.

Switchblade sucks.

Although I'm not a fan of Chris Murray's video "Switchblades of Soul" nor a fan of that particular song, I do think Chris Murray has a lot of talent overall as a musician. His best talent as a musician in my opinion and many others is as a great singer. Chris Murray's merrit as a Canadian Ska icon or North American ska icon does not only stem from his work with King Apparatus, "One" or his current solo project.

His work in the industry includes but is not limited to working with many of the ska greats such as the Skatalites, Justin Hinds and the Dominoes, Toots and the Maytals among others as a backing musician, agent and promoter. He does all of those things and he does them well. He is also a sound business man. I know from experience.

Not only is Chris Murray an excellent resource in the above mentioned ways but also, Chris Murray is notorious for hooking up bands with other bands and bands with promoters and so on.

For example: Chris Murray was the person who introduced me to Mad Bomber Society, the Aggrolites (although I had been communicating with them before he introduced us), Two and a Half White Guys, Monkey among many other bands from Canada and the US that have come through Victoria. Without him, bands from our Island very well may not have had the opportunity to play with bands such as Mad Bomber Society, the Aggrolites or Two and a Half White Guys in the first place as they were first brought to Victoria through the Victoria Ska Fest or other ska shows put on by Enigmatica Entertainment. He was the one that said, "Hey, these guys are really good. You should really check them out! Book them and you won't be disappointed" Had he not really pushed and inspired me to try to trigger interest in these bands in the community, I would not have known about them specifically. And then I may not have bothered and maybe they may not have come.

Chris Murray's work resulted in benefiting everyone and bands can tour and say they played with these bands. That is to their direct benefit and helps the scene (ska and its related genres) grow in general here and other places in North America.

Cheers to Chris Murray and all the good work he does for ska in North America and other parts of the world. He gets my vote as well as a positive vote from other people supporting and working in the ska scene since the early 1960s.

BTW - The Slackers (especially Vic Ruggiero) love working with Chris Murray and they respect him a lot. That's why they have sang with him on various recordings and in live concerts all over North America and some in Europe. It is also the reason is why Vic from the Slackers tours with Chris Murray frequently. But even still, if the Slackers they did not work with Chris Murray he would be (and would be deemed to be) an excellent musician and very well respected throughout the scene just the same. - Wed, 24 Sep 2003 2:22am

In general don't see how you could think it was either although Two and a Half White Guys were used as an example. So in a sense I could see how you could pick it apart and say it was a plug (not a big deal though cause they're a solid band). But they are still an example of a band he really pushed for to come to Victoria. The post certainly wasn't any apology though. - Wed, 24 Sep 2003 10:35am

Though I generally like a lot of the stuff that Chris Murray has done, I think the video isn't much more than a conept that really wasn't able to follow through with it's main artistic intent, which is a shame. Also keep in mind, I'm sure he was well aware it would ruffle some feathers and get some attention, and as you can tell from this thread alone - It has.
It just proves the age old notion, that once something is banned, or deemed contraversial, it'll just grab more attention. if it be Elvis, Alan ginsberg, Johnny Rotton, Marylin manson, or the lesser known 'Chris Murray's gorriest home videos', which by the way isn't half as bad as what I've seen on the local news just in the past week alone. - Wed, 24 Sep 2003 12:45pm

People I know who have met Chris all tell me what a great guy and positive influence he is. I'm glad because that means I would cut the guy some slack, I might even go see him live. However this video is just no good and all the recordings I've heard have been "lo-fi" acoustic stuff that simply doesn't resonate quite the way that, say, King Apparatus did. So I stick by my guns while hoping that someday his stuff gets more interesting to me. - Thu, 25 Sep 2003 11:59pm
