Anyone a member of the musicians union? Just wondering if it's a good idea or not. What are your thoughts? - Mon, 15 Sep 2003 4:43pm

It's just the jazz guys that are into that... doesn't work so well for rock musicians. - Mon, 15 Sep 2003 7:54pm

it's not just for jazz musicians. it's good for any musician who happens to do work for tv or radio, like cbc stuff or much music and the occasional union live gig. it also helps when you have to fly on planes...when you show your current afm card to the person at the gates, you are allowed to bring your instrument (plus your other 2 carry-oons) on board. they also help you with work visas, equipment insurance and other stuff like that. but if you just want to play gigs around town...it's not worth joining until you have to (if & when you get a union gig). best of luck to all of you musicians! - Mon, 15 Sep 2003 9:59pm

Border thing is a serious headache remover. And of course there are the little things.......like GEAR INSURANCE. Try arranging that through any other agency and you won't get far. I have heard that SOCAN has some sort of service that it is now offering to it's membership as well; worth looking into. - Mon, 15 Sep 2003 11:37pm

the only drawback is that you have to pay $110 per year to be a member (less than $10 per month). - Tue, 16 Sep 2003 9:30pm

no hassle for working for less than union wage (what ever that is)? - Wed, 17 Sep 2003 11:07am

no hassle working for less than union wage- it's something like 50$ per member plus a little more for one person ie. "lead singer" or whatever, in a band- really it is a rate you can ask for and are legally entitled to get, but the way most bars work in victoria, you will be better recieved if you work for part of the door, like usual. being a union member is something you have to do if you want to get a super expensive work visa for the states though, which you need if you are going on a big tour.....there are also a few other perks- they have some new free life insurance, stuff like that... - Wed, 17 Sep 2003 3:06pm
