Hi, my friends and I have been playing together since last october, and we're now looking into possibly playing a show. We have no previous expereince at setting this sort of thing up, and my question is, where do we start? Where should we be asking questions and who should we be talking to about setting up a show? - Sun, 7 Sep 2003 12:37pm

Try going to pubs with a presskit containing photos, demo, and info about you guys. Then keep harrassing them till they give in and give you a show. You could also befriend a band with lots of experience playing shows already. - Sun, 21 Sep 2003 12:56pm

Well, if you live an a well populated area and there's a good music scene happening you can rent out halls for the evening with other bands. My band has done it quite a few times in nanaimo and we draw some fair crowds. - Sun, 21 Sep 2003 9:46pm

Welcome to the new age of gigging.Trust me my friend you,ll need to record a c.d of you guys, even if its all covers. The older days people used to have to set up,play etc for the bar owner.Thats time consuming so,the first thing you,ll hear from them is "send us a c.d of the band".If you need to record, email me and we,ll get you on to disc for cheap. - Wed, 1 Oct 2003 2:08pm

Neither of the bands I was in had a demo recorded before we played shows, it was more about who we knew for us. But its been about 4 years since i've had to LOOK for a gig and seeing as how theres a massive surge of music around here, the venues can be choosy. Still though my all time favorite venue is a house party, thats how both of the bands I have been in started out. I think it gets rid of some of the "first-gig-jitters" because your around peole just having a good time and dont care if you fuck up or not. And they had fun so they will say it was a good show. Word of mouth, very good advertising. - Wed, 1 Oct 2003 2:15pm

Find an established band and get them to let you open for them. Do that enough, endear yourself to the owner/sound tech, and doors will start opening. A really good way to do that is pack the place for your set, then watch it empty as the headliner goes on. Bars notice shit like that. - Wed, 1 Oct 2003 6:06pm

this works too. go through the bands listing here and start emailing them who play similar to you. be cool about it too, it'll get you a gig guaranteed. - Thu, 2 Oct 2003 6:15pm

You don't need a CD to get gigs.... You flat out don't....

Know anybody in a band? Ask them how they got started, they may know of somethign coming up that you'd fit into.... Go to show of bands you like, talk to them after the show and ask how they got started, and so on..... - Sat, 4 Oct 2003 2:27pm
