| Ty Stranglehold User Info... | First and foremost, to quote Billy Joel of all people: "WE DIDN'T START THE FIRE!!!!" We(The Hoosegow) were ejected from the venue during Death By Stereo's set because Strung Out's tour manager insisted to Sugar staff and the promoter that we set a couch on fire in one of the band rooms. In fact, Glen Bitters happened to save the bar from a major Great White senario. As it happened, a guest in the band room (yes, our guest) lost her wallet. She was looking on the floor under the couch with her lighter. It wasn't there so she went back into the bar to look. Glen was sitting in the room about ten minutes later changing his clothes and having a beer. He was the only one there when a bank of flames came out from underneath the couch. He doused the flame with water from the coolers and it almost got away from him. It was at this point that Strung Out's tour manager came out of the other room and started freaking out saying that we were trying to burn the place down. He had been a dick to us since the moment he got there. First kicking us out of the storage closet the promoter gave us for a dressing room because he wanted to use it as his office. He told us to share with DBS. Now he and all of Strung Out were advancing on Glen, but Big Rick had his back and forced them back into their dressing room. The security took it from there. During this time, I was selling merch in the bar. I went up to the band rooms to get a drink, and suddenly the promoter is screaming at me to get my band and get the fuck out. I asked what had happened but he wouldn't tell me, the security wouldn't tell me, they just followed me around the bar while I packed up our merch, found my wife and tried to load gear. What it boils down to is this: The tour manager didn't like Glen from the start because he wouldn't take any of his shit. He told us that they were a touring band and we weren't shit, even though he knows nothing about us. There was an accident and a fire started by someone and it was quickly taken care of thanks to our bass player. Instead of thanks, he and the rest of us get the boot from a rad show (except out drummer Pauly. The promoter told him he could stay because "he is nice" WTF?!) Lastly I'd like to say that the guys in Death By Stereo are a really cool bunch of guys, especially drummer Chris and the two guitarists. Even after the fiasco, I was talking to them and they seemed to understand the situation. Also the Sugar Security were pretty damn cool about the whole situation. I didn't agree with what was going down, but they weren't dicks about it, and some even may have sympathized with us. It's rare that the bouncers are decent to punk rockers, but these guys were all good. I doubt we'll get asked to play Sugar again, but I'd like them to know that if it wasn't for Glen, they'd own a burned out crater right now. Who is their right mind uses a Lighter to look for something under a couch? A Negligent person. Not something you want to be talking about. You can be held responsible for your guests actions. Mmk? It's fine that Glen prevented something awful happening, but it doesn't mitigate the fire. How about next time you leave your unsupervised guests outside with the rest of the public. I would kick you out as well until I saw that you have matured enough to choose the appropriate guests. Using a lighter as a flashlight is DUMB. I am saying that it was because of the tour manager who had a bug up his ass from minute one that the situation escalated. It's a frustrating situation and I thought I would share my side of it. They seem to have an excellent handle on appropriate responses, and not over-reacting, all the while doing a top notch job of protecting. They still decided to go around and round up the rest of the band that had nothing to do with it and escort us out. Even the girl with the lighter tried to explain the situation to the promoter and security to no avail. I'll also reiterate that the security staff at Sugar were just doing their job and weren't being dinks to any of us. Thank you for the respect boys, I appreciate it. The promoter was also really easy to deal with up until the incident. He panicked though, and I probably would have too with that asshole tour manager screaming for our heads. | Doc User Info... | I'm glad to hear that no one was hurt, and I'm also glad to hear that you had a positive experience with security, although, I am still a little concerned about security at Sugar. I remember going there to see Fear Factory and Suffocation, security searched me thoroughly for weapons and contraband, then allowed my fiancee to walk right in wearing her leash made of 1/2" chain link. Just because the level of damages were minimized because luckily someone who there to stop it, it doesn't mean that there was no negligence. The BAND and/or guest could easily be held responsible for the damages. Whether it be a couch or a room load of 99 people (Great White) it is NEGLIGENCE. The band could be held responsible because it was their DUTY to ensure that only responsible and AUTHORIZED guests be allowed in the back room. Inviting irresponsible people shows wanton or disregard for public safety. The dumb chick who used a lighter to look for something under the couch had the DUTY to ensure that no fire was caused. Due to her disregard to public safety she chose not to unsure she caused any fires. If someone was hurt, the Venue could be held responsible because they had the DUTY to ensure that they provide a safe place for patrons. Which is why they booted the band and guests. I know I am right. Shut and closed. Just because we didn't have 99 people die, it doesn't mean there was no negligence. YES everyone has used a lighter from time to time, but we ALL make sure we aren't torching the place as we do it. Had the person who put out the fire gotten burned the slightest, it is a case for Criminal Negligence. Now instead of constantly disagreeing with me Grimlord and uttering retarded commentary...open your eyes/ears and take in what I have to say/type. It may give you some good tips for when you ever decide to go to high school and take criminal studies. I said she was our "guest" but I should have said that she was our guest in that we were the only people in the band area that she would have known. The promoter had asked us to keep people in back to a minimum, and I thought he would have told the security at the bottom of the stairs the same thing. I'm not sure why she was up there. As for the reason that anyone should believe anything I say, I think that having been a part of this music community for well over ten years should stand for something. Accidents happen, yes, and I don't think the band should be put soley in the place of fault. It is the promoter and the venue/venue security, who are responsible to oversee the show and insure the safety of all the guests; however, the band is responsible for people they bring backstage- especially if they are listed as a guest becauase then that signifies that the band is acknowledging its responsibility. So I think the promoter was in the right to send the band away from the venue- because when it comes down to it, the promoter's ass is always on the line with these types of issues and it is a lot easier for a band to leave the show, explain their side of the story and then continue on. Shows are fucking crazy- people trying to sneak in, people trying to get backstage, people having fun, people being assholes, people being drunk, people trying to screw around in the bathrooms. But just because a band signs on the play a show doesn't mean there isn't some responsibility involved, in fact, I deem in common courtesy to the promoter. It is unreasonable to think that the promoter has the power to put out fires/fights/technical difficulties..etc, in 50 billion places at once. So the band should know that those who it deems as "guests" of the band, are the responsibility of the band as well as the responibilty of the promoter. The number one thing I loathe as a promoter (not that I'm saying this about you) is bands who think they are hot shot, music gods and can do anything they want..not only does their arrogance become trouble for me because they refuse to do simple things for me like try and keep the back room semi-clean when you leave, don't vandalize and if you are at an all ages show, save your drinking for later and for the love of christ don't buy beer for minors (I've had this happen and I tossed the band out of the show). I also posted somewhere up there that "guest" was the wrong choice of words on my part in the original post. The person in question is a friend of the band's, but I do not know how or why she was backstage. I really just feel that the promoter panicked in the face of the tour manager freaking out. I understand this. I also understand asking those people involved to leave (I don't think I ever mentioned that the girl with the lighter was NOT kicked out even after she told staff that it was her fault).
