If a band asks you to back it's still the bars responsibility to pay you, not the headliner. And this would've been better handled in email to the McG's don't ya think? Oh wait... This is live vic.... Home of the drama queen. - Fri, 5 Sep 2003 9:11am

My my Luke, you impatient fellow. You were there and there was a mix up with the guarantee so we didn't take any money... $0. I heard from Andrew today and its sorted, as I said it would be (not even two full days later). It was his anniversary yesterday so, suprise suprise he weasn't there. Your bass player has been talking to Jill so why don't you talk between yourselves and decide who's sorting out your business. Nice post... doesn't reflect too well on you and I suppose you won't play there again. Not overly clever. Too bad, I really liked your band and it was nice to see Will etc. but I'm sure their cooler heads will prevail. How about using your brains before you post something this immature and stupid. Like we would fuck anyone over, ever. Jill will be in touch with your bassist. I normally would never air this shit in a public forum, but then again I'm not you. Sorry to everyone who has to read this stupid rubbish when all it took was a little patince to work it out. We have NEVER had any problems with Steamers, Andrew has always paid us what we arranged and playing there has always been good. Steamers, Logans and bars like that should be appreciated not hacked. Give your head a shake. You realize how you appear hacking us and the bar without the benefit of any facts. This is over as far as I'm concerned and I couldn't give a rat's ass what you think say or do. Unfortunately after such a pile of slander I felt I was obliged to respond. Appologies again for having to take part in this comletely unnecessary waste of time. Very unprofessional.

Personally I have never liked it when I played a show and was told "the owner/manager's not here so we'll pay you later" especially if it's any kind of door show. Door takes have a way of shrinking on the way from the door to the office (Harpo's was bad for this back in the day). One favorite trick is the old "there's nobody here authorized to pay you" which can usually be solved by simply refusing to leave until you get paid. Another nice one is the old "guarantee plus" deal. I played in Nanaimo awhile back and the guarantee was $200 (for two bands!) plus 70% of the door "after expenses". When we got there I noticed a clipboard with two $100 cheques leaning against the bar. When I asked the soundman how many bands made more than their guarantee he just laughed. Bands should get paid at the end of the night unless specific arrangements have been made BEFOREHAND. Anything else is just shysterville. - Sat, 6 Sep 2003 1:55pm

Yes, I thought the rule was: never, ever leave til you get paid. The bigger the band (# of member and sheer bulkitude) the better. - Sat, 6 Sep 2003 2:31pm

hey everyone has a point here. i can't count the amount of times i've been ripped by bar owners, and it's true that you have to get on 'em about $. But if you leave without getting paid, there really aint' much you can do, man. Nobody will pay you if you don't make a fuss, unless you know them and have a relationship and shit with them business wise. all i do now is demand to get paid right fucking now, no matter how fucked up i am. it's pretty much the only way. gotta be careful. - Sat, 6 Sep 2003 11:12pm

Bands need to fight the local club monopoly. There should be at least three local bands making $1000.00 a month at least. Enough for then to get by without additional jobs and get serious about writing better music. Dealers could keep the band high and make sales through groupies. As one band dies off, another is ready to replace them and keep the competition high.
I offered two local bars a deal where Id rent the whole bar for a few grand, a month ahead. I wanted %100 of the door and %30 of specified drink specials and they both laughed at me. So the club owners make it impossible to make anything back to pay my bands what they are worth ($200, $400, $600, and $800 for the four bands in order.
Ok, forget the drink specials.
The bar still gets a full house of drinkers to profit off of and cash up front for the night. Nothing off their back. Everyone profits.
What about clubs selling tickets to the band ahead of time? The band pays a couple dollars per ticket for 500 tickets or however many they want. Band sells tickets for whatever they decide. The bar keeps all drink sales except the smart business owners who know to tip a few hundred $$$ to bands on especially good drink sales nights.
Keep the bands happy and the competition high, keep the local mob (dealers) happy, and the club owners working with this program would double their income without screwing over the musicians that help pay their bills.
Ive spoken to several members of bands that play shows often and they dont like my ideas cause they are happy with free beer, getting laid, and dont want higher competition.
I tried to keep this very short. If you want more details with actual numbers and specifics, send me e-mail. [email protected] with monopoly typed subject. - Sun, 7 Sep 2003 6:22pm

Ummm, not to be an ass, but no way is 1000 a month enough for a band to get by, 2 people would be a stretch...

I agree on the idea though... don't really see it happening in Victoria sadly... perhaps van.

And moreso, I think you pitched your idea at myself, that or someone did a very similar one, the problem with that is no bar knows what you're going to bring through the door, so agreeing to give you money from the bar's booze is quite the stretch..

You can rent out halls and things of that sort, set up your own bar for the night and do it that way...

But bars aren't in business to rent out their buildings, they want to sell booze, plain and simple...

But if you were to offer the bar more money upfront then they'd expect to make on drinks for the night, I could see some bars possibly going for it, mabye you should just lose the 30% of the drink specials idea and try a few more bars in town... Do it right someone will probably say yes :) - Sun, 7 Sep 2003 9:31pm

This post has inadvertently turned into an interesting discussion. As for the original discussion I think waiting for pay is a no no. If the headliner is the only one who gets paid they should pay the opener if not out of courtesy at least to save face. People talk, people have friends and it's a small town. What would that band do if they were touring through town, "We'll pay you tomorrow, oh you'll be in Bellingham? That's too bad.". Unfortunately due to the fact that we are all "scab" musicians we don't have union protection. If that situation happened to a band in the union working with a union contract there would be lawyers from New York and Toronto here in a heart beat and the parties not forthcoming with payment would very sorry for any delays, to put it politely. Unfortunately no bar in this town, for the most part, would never pay union scale wages or even sign an AFM (American Federated Musicians) contract with local unsigned bands. I'm sure they honour those types of arrangements with touring acts who draw because it's money in the bank.

As for Ratman's proposal:
>>>>"What about clubs selling tickets to the band ahead of time? The band pays a couple dollars per ticket for 500 tickets or however many they want. Band sells tickets for whatever they decide. Holy fuck, intelligent discussion on LiveVictoria? I don't get it.... But I certainly fucking approve.....

I'm been talking to some of my musician friends lately and I kinda think we have the making of a really cool scene around here.... We have lots of interesting bands that know each other and go to each others' shows and shit, and that's a good start.....

But it would also be great to see an awesome musician run/centered venue get going.... Logan's is really good for that, but I'm talking about aplace that sells booze so it can have bands come play, rather than having bands come play so they can sell booze...... For all I know, that might be Chris's philosophy, but more venue that exist for music first would do nothing but help.... - Mon, 8 Sep 2003 10:26pm

Sorry that the Mcgillicuddy's had to go through this public slag, a nicer group of people could not exsist. We have done a numbe of shows in support of this great local act. We always got paid and alway got drunk..who could complain about that?
As far as the money thing goes we try to always cut an 80/20 split with the house, they pay the sound man we pay the opener, and we ALWAYS pay the opener even if we only made enough to pay them, (ask the sweathogz who once got a $100 for opening for us when we made $25!). The other thing we do is whenever possible have our own door person take in the money, keeps those disappearing funds from disappearing.
In support of local door staff I will say that the Steamers door staff, ( Annie), has always been great and we try to tip her out for her bulldog like effort to keep deadbeats from scammin a way in. Same goes for Ben @ Lucky, good people who do a really good job. Out of town is a different story, but with 8 members we never have trouble with any payment, we usually out number the staff of the place,

Re: Knife Ghost and greg duch posts:

Gee thanks for the compliments Knife Ghost and greg duch. I'm almost embarrassed, but the only reason my anti-pay-to-play post sounded intelligent was due to the fact I avoided using expletives. Don't be fooled though, in live conversation they are practically all I use. I spell check my posts then cut and paste them in also (sort of cheating, I know).

Since you guys are feeling rather charitable with your compliments you could go one step further and hook me up with a bass player. I was impressed with greg's list of favourites including Cheap Trick, Capt. Beefheart and Fugazi.

To be fair to the others we should start a new post and continue discussing the pay issue and Knife Ghost's ideal "place that sells booze so it can have bands come play, rather than having bands come play so they can sell booze". There's such a place in San Francisco called Gilman Street I believe (it's a punk rock type collective/co-op I understand).

I'll start a post called "live to play". - Tue, 9 Sep 2003 5:27pm
