I'm sure that it is old news by now but for those who haven't noticed, for what ever reasons there may be, it seems that local musicians are getting seriously taken advantage of in this town. And yes, I'm sure we've all heard this rant before but as some one who lives for music and putting on great shows I feel the need to express myself.

For the last 2 weeks I have been eagerly searching for a venue to play a standard kick ass ALL AGES rock show on Sunday may 31st. Now I realize that the issues are pretty obvious : (sunday gig, and all ages) but what is it that sparked the mass shutdown of the all ages scene here?
and more than that why is it next to impossible the find an affordable venue? The sunset room charges $50 an hour to rent. 50!!!?? Maybe it's becasue I'm from Ontario and new to the West coast but this is not what I call rock n roll..

What ever happened to shows were 3-4 bands play, charge 5 bucks a head, tonnes of people come out, the venue gets paid with out some one having to loose an ass load of personal cash.. and god forbid the bands take home a little dough for them selves so they can continue to operate and make music.

So what's my point? ... I'm asking all musicians in Vic who give a fuck. Can we do somthing about this? Any advice? Anybody else feel the way I do? Frustrated.. pissed off.. ect..

All the good venues got shut down because of shitty kids. The problem with all ages shows is kids like to come and get drunk. When kids come and get drunk they wreck shit. When shit gets wrecked, venues stop renting out to rock shows. The reality of promoting in this town means if you've got touring bands, you're probably paying out of your own pocket.
Sunset room is pretty much the cheapest venue left I can think of aside from Camas Bookstore, and probably the Bayanihan center. Once you're looking at booking venues like Victoria Events center or White Eagle Hall on a friday or saturday (prime nights) the price can sky rocket.
In short, a few shitty kids ruin the fun for everyone else. Big Fernwood, Little Fernwood, Gary Oak Room, James Bay Community center, I don't think any of these places are doing shows anymore, and when I started going to shows 6 years ago, these were pretty much the only venues (Pandora, etc. were before my time). In 3 years+ of playing local shows monthly, I've been paid I think once or twice for doing a show in Victoria, one of those being when we played with Nardwuar (obviously larger band that had the draw to pay out to locals).
You can beat your head against the wall all you want, but the fact is, shitty kids before you came ruined it for you. Either take the quite possible chance of losing money (more so if you bring in touring bands, who you should be paying ~200$ for ferry/gas costs alone), or try to get local promoters interested in you and let you open on a 5 band bill. - Sun, 26 Apr 2009 11:15pm

there are a few all ages venues still kickin' that are affordable. a few. check "upcoming shows" and look at where they're happening. yeah, a lot of promoters are bad at keeping kids under control. I'm hoping to do a few shows this summer and I'm not letting anyone ruin them. - Mon, 27 Apr 2009 10:11am

No, I've seen Funk Vigilante play at Soprano's, and I've met Ghosty, the band is actually good, and they seem to be pretty down to earth guys who are stoked about music (not just their own). I highly recomend going to see this show, Funk Vigilante is a seriously fun band and their tunes are good imho.

Lack of venues has everything to do with morons in the scene as well as promoters who don't provide proper security. It's a regular cycle and has been this way as long as I've lived here (20+ years). The only real constant I can even think of, gig wise, is the Rats Nest but even shows there are a lot more rare than they used to be (understandably so since it's Gary's personal residence).

Fernwood Community Center was totally behind the scene up until the stabbing/slashing that happened there. And although the offenders weren't really involved in the scene, that news has made venue management in the city wary of all age gigs. - Sun, 3 May 2009 12:27am Edited: Sun, 3 May 2009 12:29am

Are some of these cats formally of the band Kemiztry? I remember seeing them at a show years ago. Had this skinny, pale metal head, dancing without a shirt as if he was high or drunk as fuck. But....Turns out he was just enjoying the music and was stone sober. I enjoyed that more than the actual set. Haha. White boys say no to dreds. - Sun, 3 May 2009 7:54am

This is correct Swingin' Joe the singer and drummer in Funk Vigilante were members of Kemiztry. I joined as the bassist for a little while, but un happy with the amount of progress being made I scooped up a couple new doodz made it a 5 piece and changed the name to Funk Vigilante. The new energy and sound was a breath of fresh air for all of us. I seem to remember this shirtless metal head incident. That was a fun show! - Sun, 3 May 2009 11:06am Edited: Sun, 3 May 2009 11:07am

I remember ghosty boy. Also the drummer (steve, paul?)

I don't think I have ever met a group of guys who are so genuinely into music as a whole. By that I mean about other shows, venues, gigs and bands, just not themselves. Just a great set of guys who love music.

As far as the genre, I like it. It has a different flavor that I haven't seen before.

If you have a chance to gig with these guys, do it. They're willing to put in the work to make the show work.

That's my plug.

Fickle scene? I dunno, I think it'll get better in a few years.

Dude, scene died when Jay Brown died (it did, Jay believed in a lot). It seems like these venues are making a killing off the bands/talent that play there, and they are grateful they have a venue to offer talent fer. I still say the scene was stronger a few years ago, then again I wierded out and lost touch with the scene.

BTW: I thought the scene was dead cause I can't head down to live venues on a whim. Besides, I just stood around and looked like a idiot when watching bands at gigs (I can't mosh cause I'm afraid of getting cracked in the head), and a killer lieup of live talent I've seen. BTW: I so respect the people that tolerated me being backstage at Lucky, though I doubt I could do similar these days :( - Sun, 3 May 2009 4:52pm Edited: Sun, 3 May 2009 4:59pm

We play again at the Cambie in Esquimalt May 31st with NINJA SPY from Vancouver... these guys... any one into harcore, ska, or any cool heavy music CHECK THESE GUYS OUT. I had to bend over backwards to get this band along with WHITE BOARD PROJECT and TODAY I CAUGHT THE PLAGUE. All of these bands kick total ass. ... yes yes i know the Cambie isn't the most popular place nor is Sunday for concert goers BUT it's an early show. Starts at 7 pm. And I say, if there are people in Vic who are truly dedicated to getting Vic back in shape.. they'll be there for this show. - Mon, 4 May 2009 5:13pm
