Everyone should realise that the bands in Victoria who are actually interesting and play great music will never be asked to get involved in something like this much music thing! When the rest of the country sees the show, most people will assume that all Victoria has to offer is lame and unexciting music. The odd person may realise that it is not a good portrayal of our music scene because they may be in a band in another city who never got asked to do a similiar thing! All the great bands from Victoria like Frogeyes, run chico run, carolyn mark, the fine options, woolly mammoth etc.do not need a crap much music show, people who see them play in other cities will appreciate them, I am from another city and I do! - Sat, 2 Aug 2003 7:27pm

As far as we go, we are used to being excluded from the mainstream, but that is the trade off for playing music we love instead of playing a different style just to get on Mainstream Much.
As far as MuchMusic goes, we did appear on Loud this past weekend, so it isn't a big deal.

Hey everybody, it's only Muchmusic, so who cares? I used to get down a bit when my bands were passed over for this sort of thing but upon long reflection I realised that being excluded from "media events" like these meant a lot of positive things. Like the fact that what I was doing was different from the mainstream (a constant goal of mine). Or the fact that, since a single person (in this case a promoter) has chosen the bands (including one that I'm sure nobody even in Victoria has heard of) and that promotor is part of a cartel that I wouldn't piss on if they were collectively on fire, I have successfully stayed out of a loop that I WANT to stay out of, yet at the same time retain a considerable international presence all by myself. And imagine the satisfaction of playing out in TO or some other media centre and having the Much flacks say "Gee I've never heard of you" even though you've been in the business for over 20 years, releasing good records and touring all over the world. Then you realise that Muchmusic is just another bad promo organ run by people who are such scenemongers that they know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about music; all they know is what is set down in front of them by publicists and promoter hacks. This is not to dis the bands that are appearing; I hope they have fun etc. but I sure hope the folks in Insides Out (whoever they are) don't think that they've made the "big time" (whatever that is) just yet. Or to put it in perspective a bit remember that Nomeansno have been on Much exactly once, well over 10 years ago, and they seem to be doing fine, career-wise. - Wed, 6 Aug 2003 12:01pm

Mr. Cunt, to you June. And actually I have nothing at all against Nick himself, I think he's an OK guy; it's his partners that I detest, and, after all, you are judged by the company you keep. And even if Insides Out is a new band with a veteran or two in it, the fact remains that they have no profile in town, yet. I'm betting that the band has a close connection to Nick in some way, but complaining that the guy choosing the bands is favouring his pals is a tad naive; this kind of thing happens in almost every similar situation everywhere. Which is why I say who cares about this event; it should be fun for the bands and the crowd and maybe even the Much flacks, but to treat it like it's some big break for these bands or suchlike is not realistic, and I hope nobody gets their hopes up. And no, I'm not bitter; Muchmusic is usually the kiss of death, and I hope to never cross paths with any of them. Why do you think Much got Nick to choose the bands in the first place? That's right, not one of them could name a band from Vic if their lives depended on it, after all they are based in Toronto, the "epicentre of all Canadian music". And therein lies my cynicism. - Wed, 6 Aug 2003 1:34pm

Well Zipgunn my man, I will say that I have a very hard time finding falt in anything you say. Vic's scene, like most scenes, lives the old addage of "it is who you know and who you blow" that gets you attention, and Victoria is really nepotisim city man! I don't know Nick or any of the Much scene, I stopped watching that shit in the 80's, and I certianly have nothing against him or any of the bands that will apear in this event. All bands, and promoters, that work hard at their original things get my respect. But I do feel what you say about living under the radar so to speak. King Bong is an collection of musicians who take pride in our craft and our beliefs and get our buzz from the connection with the audience, to know they hear you is woth a million Much showcases, and it is a pleasure to play to crowds of local scenesters and have them ask afterwards," Fucking great show, what city are you guys from anyway"? All my favorite muscians exsist under this radar, lets face it for most of us that is the best we will ever know, how many Hot Hot Heat's can there be????

Well the Dayglos have been on muchmusic before. If any of you are old enough to remember the censorship trial, you probably would of seen them. Who cares if us punks, and the country scene aint getting any cover this time? We do it the old fashioned way anyways, play and tour forever and get your shit out there yourself. As for Carolyn Mark, that girl's making it all by herself she doesnt need anyones help. Hmmm well that's certainly flattering (if debatable), but the fact of the matter is, being "famous" sucks (as I discovered a few times when I was out of town). As for the DayGlos, the only reason Much gave a shit about them was that they were in trouble with the law; if, say, David P. Smith were to, say, garrott Kerry Mercer on stage at Logan's Much would be here in a flash wanting to know all about him. And let's face it, if this gig were, say, Carolyn Mark, Frog Eyes, dps, Deer & Fawn and Chet nobody in TO would even UNDERSTAND it, much less like it. I find it significant that in 15 minutes on Google I found another Special Guests (Austrian ska band, ugh!), at least two other Big Muff's (one a well known dance-techno band) and no less than THREE other Money Shot's (including a dreadful 60's style cover band from California). Now some of the people in these bands are in fact friends of mine and I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings, and some of these bands are in fact pretty good, but the above research is kind of damning doncha think? At least the good folks in Jets Overhead finally saw the light, albeit about 3 years too late, because "Special Guests" is arguably the worst band name in history. Hey abc,
Here's a little friendly advice. If anyone has license to comment in an paternally omniscient tone it's Zippgunn.

When you have been signed to Alternative Tentacles, help to establish a university radio station (CFUV) and count members of NoMeansNo as your personal friends perhaps you can confidently comment on a scene you helped build and proceed to be slagged by petulent interlopers.

You are either an un-hip teen or from out of town. You have know idea of the faux pas you have committed do you? Know the players, keep score and listen/read before you speak/write. Consider this if you ever want to record in this town. - Thu, 7 Aug 2003 9:50am

Yes, Animal, there are a bunch of Shovelheads now, but we were the first one (to my knowledge) and when we underwent a major personnel shuffle we discovered that Country Dick (of the Beat Farmers) had a fuck band called Shovelhead, so we decided to change the name (we also discovered that a Shovelhead was a type of Harley motorcycle which we had no idea of and which didn't exactly fill us with joy. Then, incredibly, another band, spelled Shovelhed, I think, came out of New West sounding like grunge. But that was years later.) Thus was born Swell Prod. As for abc's "post" I would devise a witty response to it but unfortunately, even though I've helped bring two children into the world, my grasp of gibberish is still not great; perhaps some helpful soul out there could translate for me. What the fuck is a "shizna minelly" anyway? (perhaps an arcane Yiddish expression?) One thing: I don't exactly claim to be a know it all but I'll bet I've forgotten more about music and the music biz than you'll ever know, so cry me a river. I only bother to play on this board because I know that the sensitive souls out there howl with rage at some of the things I say; I try to be the sober harsh reality dude that shatters all the starry eyed notions of fame and wealth that almost every Much friendly musician seems to harbour. I've been signed to big labels, done international tours, made dozens of records, own my own pro studio and after 20 years... I have about $20 in my wallet. The feeble mewlings of my naysayers amuse me no end. Keep up the good work. But the question remains unanswered: who the devil is Insides Out? I really would like to know, as would the rest of this board, apparently. - Thu, 7 Aug 2003 11:53am

Ah ha, leave it to Moron to spot the fabrication in my resume. Both Klugman and Monster Tweedy were fictitious band names that Neckbeard and Carolyn Mark came up with years ago, and I thought they were such good names that I just had to add them to my list. The Strength of Ten Vampires DID, however, exist for exactly one hour in which we recorded a CD while my wife Sylvia made tacos one night. It consisted of Neckbeard and me improvising over a bed of horrible samples and features an incredible cover. We made about 3 copies and that was it. - Sat, 9 Aug 2003 1:32am

And everyone is right, Carolyn Mark should be on this show, but unfortunately Much doesn't give her or her genre any support. It goes without saying that it's impossible to have everyone agree on a line-up that satisfies all sides. There are always going to be great projects that get left out, but as Scott says this show is not some magic bullet that is going to propel any of the bands playing it to a higher level. It's just a little exposure on a national tv channel that statistically is mostly watched by teenage girls. Whether a band is playing it or not won't make one ounce of difference to their long-term career, and any band that thinks it magically will probably isn't going to have a career. Regarding the line-up, from what I can tell you've got a hip hop act, a jazz/electronic act, a punk act, a female-fronted act...the bill seems more diverse than it's getting credit for here. Some metal representation is missing, but again Much's metal programming is pretty limited nowadays unfortunately. The main thing to keep in mind is that, from what I know, no one involved in this is deluded into thinking this is the only representation of Victoria's music community. There's too much diversity and talent in this city to capture. Much would not allow a submission process, and hence someone had to make tough decisions and wade through politics that go far deeper than anything touched upon on this message board. - Sat, 9 Aug 2003 12:35pm

Okay, I meant good old real metal (as opposed ot Finger Eleven or rap/metal or whatever else they program). From what we've heard the bands are splitting any profits above costs, with primary costs being a production contribution and policing costs (as required by the City of Victoria for the Open Air venue). So in simple terms it's a six-way door deal after expenses, where money is made by the bands based on people showing up. - Sat, 9 Aug 2003 4:11pm

Ah the euphemisms of the music biz. What exactly is a "production contribution"? Is that money given to Much to offset their expenses in putting on this event (which they scarcely need as such cost would be tax write offs as business expenses), or is this money that will go to Nick for helping Much organize the whole thing (not that he won't have earned it; this whole thing sounds like a headache to put on). And getting the bands to help pay for the policing costs of what is pretty much exclusively a Much/new VI production is a lot like Lucky bar getting the bands to help pay the bouncers and bartenders. Don't forget that Much will be selling advertising on this show, and ads on Much aren't cheap. Also if they were to pay the policing costs, these too would be completely tax deductable. And to the dude I ask: Why would anyone want to play what amounts to a benefit show for the likes of Much? They wield almost absolute power over what will get airplay on TV in the whole country. 10 or so years ago Moses Znaimer (sp?) decided he didn't like Public Enemy because he thought they were anti-semetic (thanks to Professor Griff shooting his mouth off about the "chosen race" if I remember the quote right). I should add here that Znaimer is a Tajikistan born Jew. Result: Public Enemy were banned from Much and therefore Canada. Now whether or not you think Griff is a hateful bigot or not this kind of power in the mass media is far too dangerous to be concentrated in the hands of one man. If nothing else it adds fuel to the fires of all the Holocaust deniers and Zionist media conspiracy paranoids. Oh yeah, one more thing; Znaimer owns the New VI. If I had the choice of taking the "national exposure" or taking the dough and hiring a good publicist you can bet you know which one I would chose. And I don't like the idea of desperate bands sucking cock to Znaimer for a little "national exposure" while he laughs all the way to the bank. Bottom line: $10 a ticket X, say, 500 people = $5,000. The bands better fucking well get SOME dough! - Sat, 9 Aug 2003 5:36pm

Production Contribution is definitely a euphemism, but it's used here more to avoid boring detail in a public forum. The expense sheet is pretty straightforward. Expenses are low enough that if 500 pay and $5000 is grossed, the bands will be paid out very well. Much aren't footing any costs (which, depending on your view, could be criticized), but the good thing about them not footing costs is that if the show goes well and money is made, then they don't see any of that upside. Their only advertising contribution is adding the show to the Canadian Concert Listings at no charge. They are also not slipping any tv, filming or crew expenses into the show's expenses, ie the bands aren't paying for the Much crew's ferry ride from Vancouver, their hotels in Vic, etc. - Sat, 9 Aug 2003 7:51pm

Well then one can hardly complain; sounds like a better deal than I expected considering the fact that most of these bands play exclusively inside the Luckybar/Steamers axis. Let's hope it has good weather on its side. - Sat, 9 Aug 2003 8:11pm

All this navel-gazing regarding how MuchMusic chose what Victoria bands to spotlight. I wouldn't think much thought goes into it. They talk to a few local producers, etc., try to get a few different types of bands. Big fucking deal.

Imagine if you were Much and you visited Halifax, for example. How the hell would you know what was REALLY going on in that city? I wouldn't read too much into this. Who gives a fuck about Much, anyway?

Why don't you wanks shut up and learn to play your instruments? - Sat, 9 Aug 2003 9:35pm

just wanted to interject here to try to clarify something. zippgun makes several good points that i agree with and then comes the bit about lucky bar asking the bands to pay for bouncers and bartenders. is he using that as an example of something that shouldn't happen or saying that has happened? to my knowledge that has never happened at lucky bar and never will as long as i am here. we go out of our way to treat bands fairly here while trying to keep our business profitable in a very competitive market. perhaps zippgun could clear this up for me. ben. - Sun, 10 Aug 2003 5:26pm

His point was that getting bands to contribute (cashwise) to policing at a Much event would be like Lucky (or any venue) getting the bands to contribute to hire bouncers or bartenders.... Meaning that it's bullshit....

Don't worry, Ben, I've heard nothing but good things from bands who've dealt with Lucky.... - Sun, 10 Aug 2003 7:12pm

Lucky bar treats the bands better than almost any bar I've played at in this city. The only one I can think of nowadays that is that good to the performers is Logans. Damn nice to have two venues that treat the bands with a bit of respect, kinda makes you want to come back and play there again. Granted Lucky bar does have one up with the postering, but hey they've also got their own photocopier....... damnit, I want one. - Sun, 10 Aug 2003 11:43pm

My humblest apologies to the Lucky crew. I have never heard of them asking for such things but only used them as a theoretical example; perhaps I should have used Logan's instead, that way I could have got John's ass in a knot, which I know would exite him. The only reason I used Lucky's is because it seems all the bands involved in this shindig have played there or have deep connections to Atomique. And now that I think of it, none of them has ever played Logan's. A conspiracy perhaps? We'll never know. - Mon, 11 Aug 2003 12:03am

Lucky Bar takes (whenever I or MY friends have played there) 20% of the door after expenses!! That means the door guy and the sound guy get paid (which is of course a reasonable expectation) but then to take 20% of the bands shitty 200 dollar earning? I'm not sure that is fair considering they probably make 6 to 8 times that on a busy night. If they don't trust the bands to do their own promotion and get people to come then why would they book them? If they want to pay their own people to make and distribute posters (which doesn't do a lick of good on the busy 'put up tare down' polls downtown) then THEY should pay for it. Logan's doesn't charge bands for their Monday magazine ad. That's something that bars which are venues call "overhead". la da la!!!
P.S. - Sinep you are a useless tool. - Wed, 13 Aug 2003 3:47pm

well if your band brought in more people then you'd get more off of the door wouldnt you. I know from my point of view, if the bar is giving you the door, minus the sound man then it's your job to make sure that the rooms full so that you get paid. Whenever we've played there we not only make up our own posters but usually put up at least a few hundred of our own out of downtown so that with the bar doing downtown then everywhere is covered. If you do your job, and they do theirs then in a perfect world the room would be full and you'd make a ton of cash. I dont know about you but I've had nothing but good experiences playing there. - Wed, 13 Aug 2003 5:06pm

550 tickets sold, so about 700 people at peak.

A quick band-by-band recap:

BigMuff - For the only band to have a soundcheck, they had a lot of sound problems. They seemed a little lost on the big stage.

Insides Out - Someone please explain why these guys deserved to be on the bill? Not offensive, but still pretty mediocre.

Jets Overhead - Absolutely fantastic. First time I've seen them... they totally deserve all their hype. Easily the best rock band in this city.

Grace Nocturnal - They owned the stage. Their egos are way too big for this city, and I mean that in a good way.

Moneyshot - The boys from Fernwood have the most integrity out of anyone in town. I thought the way they addressed Nick's comments in Monday was class act all the way. Moneyshot was loud, fast, ballsy, and they had a fucking mosh pit in Centennial Square. I love you guys.

Lappelectro - Did not deserve to close the night off. They are an incredible band, but not in a position of, say, Jets or Grace.

I know this is short and non-descriptive, but it's late, and frankly, I don't really care. - Mon, 25 Aug 2003 1:29am
