| Matteus User Info... |  http://www.youtube.com/user/matteusvstheworld Starting in the 2nd week of March, we'll be filming as many live shows as possible to start a new video based website featuring ALL genres of music here in Victoria. If you have a show that you would like taped, let us know. All we ask is that you comp us at the door (and some beer is a bonus). We will film all the bands at that show, usually a couple of songs each. IF THERE is a sound board, we take a signal out to dub over. If not, we rely on an external condenser mic to take the sound. We shoot in high definition and the results are great. Check out the youtube channel to see a recent show at Lucky Bar. Thanks! Until then, it's just a couple songs from each band. We want to cover the whole spectrum of genres too. | Matteus User Info... | Yes, the lucky show was both a mic (sm58) and the board mix. I am more particular to having the vocals stand out as they are usually so low in videos. Not too much I can do about that at this time but I am working on it. If anyone has the experience, I use a m-audio interface that has two XLR inputs w/ 8 TRS mono inputs on the back (only 6 if you use the mics). If I can use an extra aux send (rare) then I can create my own mix, but I try to avoid being a pain in the ass to the sound man. | BBJones User Info... | Mic splitters. Doesn't involve the soundman at all and gives you full control over your recording mix. You can rent all the cables pretty cheap or whatever. That should do it so you track everything separately. If you're doing that, you should plan to have at least one overhead up over the drums and/or a room mic. | superslacks User Info... | Mic splitters would definitely be sweet, but six of your inputs are line level in, plus I think it would be hard to get the whole recording onto only eight tracks. I would suggest a triage method when recording live. Firtsly; knowing the best level balance will come from the FOH mix (including stage volmes) I'd hang a couple condensers at the mid-room point, which will catch the audience as well. Second, I would talk to the soundman - and don't be too shy, most soundmen would rather their job is well represented on tape - and ask what's available. Depending on the room size and stage volume, you can pretty much count on the vocals being high in the main mix, then the drums a little less, and the amplified instruments a fair bit lower because they need the least help from the PA. That's ok as you'll balance it out with the FOH mix. Ideally you might grab the monitor mix, as most bands only want vox and kick there. This would be perfect for balancing out the FOH mix as, as you said, that mix tends to lack vocals. If you could get seperate sub mixes of the drums and amps that would be ideal, but it would depend on what the board has and how accomodating the sound guy is. Here you might consider the mic splitters, but with your interface you're also talking pre-amps so . . . . also good splitters are fucking expensive. THose are my thoughts anyway, hope that helps. You're trying to capture a live show...my only complaint about the audio was that it didn't sound like it did at the show, because the vocals were so high in the mix, and the instrumets buried. | Matteus User Info... | GIVE THE MAN A CIGAR!! (to superslacks and BBJ) you're bang on for what I would do for a full scale DVD paid gig. BUT, since this is a casual affair, the solutions I am looking for need to be more simplistic. I was thinking a couple of AKG pencil condenser mics would be portable, light and DIRECTIONAL (like the one on my camera). then take a couple lines out of the board. if there are some sub assigns I could take for the drums, that could make it easy to balance in the post mix. | superslacks User Info... | As I said above, the number one thing is the room micing. I've gotten remarkably good sound using a crossed-pair of C1000's, even at loud volumes. The thing is if the soundman has his shit together that's the best single source you have. It's hard to play with after tho. My first choice to augment the house mix is the monitor subs because they likely contain exactly what the house sound is missing. And on from there . . . like I said, the rule for ALL things live is triage. Honestly I think the sound you got is quite decent, certainly better than 99% of the live videos I've seen. I agree the vocals are a tad more pronounced than I might choose, but more so I would bring up the bass. - Thu, 26 Feb 2009 6:38pm | ||
| Matteus User Info... | Oh dude... sorry if that sounded snarky. I was genuine in the set up you had in mind. Looking in hind sight, I could have put it through Logic and EQ'd it a bit. Ah well, in due time... The other thing i find is alot of the outs (any of them) are often taken by something else (comps, tape decks, etc). I plan on ussing my effects rack at that show (drumming for Rotterdam) which means the drums will be submixed into whaatever you want (1, 2, 3 tracks.... don't matter) So, take that into consideration when thinking about your 8 tracks for a live show. Plus I probably have 8 splitters and all the extra cables you would need.... probably... but not sure... nor do I have the time to figure it out over the next two weeks... meaning if you want to pursue it... you should talk to MR Hell - Thu, 26 Feb 2009 10:07pm | ||
| Matteus User Info... | Thanks for letting me know about that BBJ. I think that I have a plan though. For anyone looking over this thread... ADVICE needed. Keeping in mind that I am a victim of mass transit, so packing LIGHT is great, I believe that a couple of AKG pencil condenser mics (maybe X/Y config) would be my best bet for "live show" mics eh? | BBJones User Info... | I believe it is a 24 channel mackie. Usually everything gets mic'd but you are not going to get good sub-mixes without doing all kinds of pleading or all the work yourself. They barely even put instruments through the PA there let alone work on any type of good balanced mix. Really, if you want it good, you are going to need to split cables and do everything yourself (or just mic it all yourself). Are you trying to keep it down to 4 tracks for some reason? If that is a hard limit you might want to consider bringing your own mixer, mic or split it all, then create your own submixes. Anyways, you might want to assume you need to bring a really good pair of room mics to mix in with whatever you can find from the board levels. No matter how you slice it all adds up to lots of work from what I can tell. I'd be more than happy to help out/provide gear etc... but not for this show... I'm fucking swamped! | Matteus User Info... | Thank BBJ. I know what you mean about wanting to do it "right" with all the mic splitting and such. I do have 8 inputs total btw, all 1/4" mono. I have two mic pre's in the front of the unit usually used for room mics. So I guess that leaves me with 6 after the room mics. the reason for the 4 was that most boards have 4 sub outs. and here's why i DON'T want to mic split unless there's pay: (From the soundguys view) "Some guy I don't know comes into my venue, asks me what ever channel does/is, wants to rip up my sound board, risk fucking up my system making me repatch it, not give me a dime for the whole process and like the other dozen douchebags who have come in here and done the same thing, leave me a mess of wires to fix myself. Why the hell would I want to let him do that?" When I do use a splitter and add hassle to the soundman's work, I slip him a few bucks just for extra time and effort esp. since I will be making a few bucks myself. just trying to be considerate. A SIDE STORY along this topic: I went to sugar once to do a show, hooked up my laptop and interface and when the mains went on... BBBBBBUUUUUUUUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Took five minutes to figure out it was because my power supply in my laptop was cheap and was causing a bad ground in the whole system. had to unplug my adapter during the show. | Matteus User Info... | the live sound was good, so I was kind of surprised with what I got out of the board. But with the amps to fill up that gap, I can understand why the board mix was so much different. We'll see what we can do in the future to get a more solid sound out of Logan's.
