Hey,
So I just bought a used Roland ED PC-70 keyboard controller and have been trying it out with a few programs (Music Maker and Ableton Live). The keys don't seem to work. I have the controller set to channel 1 but no sounds come from the laptop. When I change to ch. 16 on the controller some random keys play but then only random notes and not in the same octave. I've tried fixing latency issues but that doesn't seem to be the case. And I've got the correct drivers for my USB to midi cord!

I'm really confused and any help is appreciated! - Sun, 22 Feb 2009 4:05pm

One thing you can do is try communicating with midi-ox. It's a free midi diagnostic tool, and it should help tell you if there's something wrong with your keyboard or if it's a software setting.

I'm not directly familiar with that controller, or that software, so sorry I can't be much more help.

I'm not familiar with that particular one either, or the programs you're using, but MIDI problems usually end up being something stupid. some things to check:
-make sure your MIDI input device corresponds correctly, in your preferences menu. if you have multiple options, try each one out.
-in the windows control panel, try changing the MIDI device
-make sure your virtual instrument is set to receive MIDI information on channel 1
-make sure you have MIDI record-enabled in your program
-make sure the virtual instrument actually has a corresponding synthesis output. you can't hear the resulting sound unless you set it to interpret the MIDI information as something real, know what I mean?

for something like this, I'd try making a basic program in Max/MSP to troubleshoot it, but that's kind of heavy on the programming and I wouldn't expect you to have Max/MSP anyway. but I'm sure there are a wealth of basic MIDI programs you could find in google to help troubleshoot your problem - programs that might not have so many preferences/options to potentially trip you up.

your channel 16 issue is curious. I wonder if, for some reason, channel 16 is being interpreted as channel 10, which could explain the "random notes", maybe something the software is doing to interpret it as the drum channel. hmmmmm.

also, I just want to say... I'm glad that people are still using MIDI and MIDI controllers. I learned so much, as a teenager, just messing around with this stuff. I'm always afraid that the modern generation of electronic musicians is going to be completely inadequate outside of fancy GUI interfaces and doing everything in software with company-specific filetypes. - Mon, 23 Feb 2009 4:36am Edited: Mon, 23 Feb 2009 4:40am
