Hello, I am moving to Victoria (in April) was wondering if anyone could give me some decent tips of good places to live for musicians. We have guitars and an upright bass moving in with us and was hoping there are some musician friendly buildings! Any suggestions? - Sun, 8 Feb 2009 11:22pm

This town is as "musician friendly "as a Glasgow kiss(headbunt to the face) in renting terms. Not to discourage you an all but read some of the posts here and you will know. - Sun, 8 Feb 2009 11:31pm Edited: Sun, 8 Feb 2009 11:33pm

Headbunts to the face are among the most barbaric baseball practices in this day and age.
Indeed, Victoria is a nice place to live, but I'm not sure of any musician friendly living spaces.
There may well be a whole bunch of them in Fernwood, though. - Sun, 8 Feb 2009 11:35pm

Yea I was thinking it'd probably be best to rent or buy a little house. Will probably be better in the long run! Is there a decent music scene? - Sun, 8 Feb 2009 11:36pm

I like a lot actually. I like oi, punk, rockabilly, psychobilly, black metal.. mostly but I like all sorts of music really. I live in Edmonton so there is a lot of decent local music but really I have friends in many types of genres. I just like to play music and go to shows. - Mon, 9 Feb 2009 1:14am

To Kayla. Victoria is a great place. A lot of musicians (Non-grimlords) have found their place here. I recommend speaking to a realtor or rental agency at this time as the housing here in Victoria is a mess. And if you are using only acoustic instruments, don't say that you are a musician. - Mon, 9 Feb 2009 8:06am Edited: Mon, 9 Feb 2009 8:13am

I know of a number of houses with bands and have been going to parties at houses with bands for years.. some last some dont its really up to neighbours and soundproofing.. for that matter Ive had a number of houses where my own band jammed with out any issues ever. Recently one of the more prominent commercial jam buildings shut down and a bunch of bands go the boot.. took all of about 5 days for my band to secure a new spot at a cheaper rate in a bigger room than we had before. So its all how you look at it, and where you end up! - Mon, 9 Feb 2009 11:00am

Thank you all. I decided to call a real estate agent. I find the rent out there pretty cheap for houses actually. But I guess it depends on the kind of money you make. Now I just need to get there to find some cool hang out spots and in this place I have to stay out of trouble ! ! Oh any awesome tattoo artist recommendations also? - Mon, 9 Feb 2009 12:10pm

If you use Firefox, which everyone should imho, grab one of the many vid downloading addons and you can grab episodes to your hearts content. You'll need to grab a utility like VLC to view the saved files as they don't save in a standard format.

Victoria will disappoint you, but good luck! Maybe you're one of those people that can figure this city out and actually tolerate those living here..

And I recommend you just rent out a house. I don't sing anymore except on the nights I jam because I'm in an apartment with 2 roommies. It sucks. - Mon, 16 Feb 2009 12:41am

I don't have methods for looking for a house other than the internet right now as I am in Alberta. What would you suggest? I don't know anyone there yet (that is the point). I've lived in a few different places in North America. This is the next step. If you've ever lived in Edmonton (or as the locals call it Dedmonton) you'd never be disappointed with anywhere other than here. - Mon, 16 Feb 2009 2:09pm

I would easily choose montreal over victoria in terms of having fun.

Victoria is definately nicer then all the other cities ive been to in canada, but I dont know anyone that has fun here. Its the most tolerable city to live in because its not totally full of concrete and garbage, and there is some nature / its not stupidly full of people. - Mon, 16 Feb 2009 2:55pm

I love Victoria, I have lived here all my life and not sure if I will ever leave…Vancouver Island has everything for me, ocean, rivers, camping, I think Victoria is the perfect balance of City/Country/forests…etc. I like the people for the most part…it is small so chances are you know someone who knows someone…lol… - Mon, 16 Feb 2009 3:57pm

I figured if I'm going to over pay on rent it might as well be somewhere pretty. I am so tired of months of -40, shovelling every second day. Only sad part is I am leaving my overpaid job, but I guess a little peace and happiness is a nice trade-off for money. I don't know if I will like that "chances are you know someone who knows someone" but I guess its like the "scenes" here same fuckin stupid faces everywhere you go. I am ready to see some new faces; eventually they will probably become stupid too. haha. - Tue, 17 Feb 2009 3:09am

Sorry, I've just been to too many places around the world to say that I like or love Victoria. There's just nothing here for me personally, I can see why other people like it... I just feel restricted here.. I could stay here and never grow.. it's just not for me at all.

One good thing- almost everything is within walking distance! (for those of us who don't drive death machines around.. I hate cars by the way.. well, more like the people who drive them who treat it more like a right than a privilege). Another good thing, or perhaps bad thing.. you'll run into at least 5 or more people you know daily, and everyone you know is friends with someone else you know or is tied to them in some way. Very small place, but that makes it kind of cool.. - Sat, 28 Feb 2009 11:05pm

I think owning a car is overrated .There is no need for me to drive. Not that i am an environmentalist or anything I just don't see the need for an extra expense and cost to just have some kind status symbol.I know what you are going to say "it's freedom man" well when I feel trapped and held down and not free I will get a car ,till them my feet do the travailing.Oh and if a chick is not going to go out with me cuz I don't have a ride well then she can go drive herself for all I care. Not the kind of materialistic bitch I am into. - Tue, 3 Mar 2009 11:45am
