Looking for a used power soak/attenuator but I have no idea what type to look for.

I have all Marshall gear and am going for a vintage/classic rock sound so am leaning towards the Marshall Power Brake but would defer to experts for their opinion.

I'm just looking to take a few db edge of my sound.

Need to handle a 50watt head and run 2 - 16ohm 4x12 cabs.

Watcha got or what do you recommend? - Sun, 8 Feb 2009 11:23am

I haven't personally used it, but I have heard good things about the Bad Cat "The Leash" attenuator. Here's the harmony central review:

+1 for the Dr Z Airbrake.
I recently sold one, only because I had previously sold my Marshall DSL 50. They work great for bringing down the db without colouring your tone. - Mon, 9 Feb 2009 5:21pm

i always hear good stuff about the THD hotplate.

but I would imagine that most attenuators are built equally since they're just meant to soak up extra power from your amp.. - Tue, 10 Feb 2009 12:26am

Yeah, you're definitely going to need a Dr. Z for that thing... that's what I had for her: told you it was f@&$ing loud!

I would have sold mine to you with the amp, but had already put it up on EBay... Just got $152US for the one I built into a 50cal ammo-box. Come to think of it, I think I still have the schematics for the one I built... about $100 in parts and so ridiculously simple! Plus a box of course... Otherwise, just plunk down the $275 for a new one @ L&M: well worth it! - Tue, 10 Feb 2009 12:34am

The Hotplate is great; but, you can't run multiple Impedance's... So if you do a smaller show say, and only want to use a 2X12 instead of a half-stack, you need a different colour unit... literally.

Although the Dr. Z is seldom an absolute perfect impedance-match, the graphs I've seen suggest it's the best compromise for any impedance, at any level of attenuation.

So... if you're never going to separate this head & her cab, definitely go for the "Blue" Hotplate... otherwise, the Dr. Z... no question. - Tue, 10 Feb 2009 12:49am

Yeah no kidding that thing is loud... I couldn't even crank it up to where I wanted and still had my guitar volume almost off :)

I'll check out the Dr Z since I like convenience (available locally). I've been reading great things about Ho's Attenuator out of Van, but it apparently only jacks out to one cab. Not good for full stacking...

I was thinking I could run the 2 4x12's together by putting an output jack into one of them like you do with PA speakers. Does that work? And no, I won't be drilling holes in the nice cab :) - Tue, 10 Feb 2009 8:22am
