What is it? A taxi-like service where they show up with 2 people in a car, one person drives you home in your car, the other person follows you to pick up the driver. It costs about 40% more than a regular taxi ride.

---

I've finally settled something with them so I can finally spread the word.

Be warned that Dial a Drive may not carry proper business insurance. That means since you have to give them permission to use your car, you could be liable for any and all damage or injury. Also be warned that if something bad happens (like a car accident) they will do everything they can to avoid taking any responsibility.

Case in point:
- This happened about 1.5 years ago (yes it took that long to get anywhere with this)
- I was using them about once a week getting home after jam
- They show up one night, and the driver backed my car into a truck in the parking lot. We both get out, see the damage (minor), he calls James (the boss), tells him what happened. I call James and he confirms with me they will take care of it.
- I called James the next day to sort out the details which were simple: I go get an estimate, he'll pay for it or put it under his insurance.
- Takes a couple of days to get an estiamte and it came out at $1100 or so. I call James to give him the amount and he flips out. I tell him to come see the car if he doesn't believe me.
- I call him back day after day and he stops returning my calls and ends by hanging up on me when I call.
- I go next to ICBC with everything.
- They try to get James to submit his business insurance policy number. ICBC calls, sends mail, sends demand and registered letters continuously for months. James refused to respond.
- Some time passed as I contemplated my options including taking him to court, but ideally getting ICBC to sort it out, which they could not.
- I settled with the plan to take them to court but gave James one last chance. Called him up, told him it was "deal with it or else" so he finally called ICBC back.
- But, same bullshit as the first time. He kept not returning calls, not producing insurance policy numbers etc.
- I called James back one last time telling him to at least come pay me my $300 deductible or my next stop was a lawyer and that would likley expose every detail about how legitimate his business was.
- He showed up 2 days later with money order.

My car is going to be repaired. I have to put the claim on my insurance policy since James never took responsibility for it. I did this becuase I was tired of waiting and didn't want to take time off work to go to court.

ICBC will be going after James via their collection agency to try and get the claim amount for the repairs back. Good luck with that...

So, trust me that I did everything possible with ICBC to try and get James to deal with this. There was nothing ICBC could do because as I said at the start, you give them permission to drive your car.

The big thing I'm trying to get at here is that I don't believe they have insurance. It makes me even more mad becuase they print on their business card "Fully Insured". Everything I have learned is that it would be too expensive. And since Dial a Driver prints business cards on plain paper where the "Trial Version" watermark shows up from the software, I have doubts about their ability to fund such an operation properly.

Don't get me wrong, I believe in the service, but not the way they run their business if it is actually even a business.

So, you've been warnend. Please tell your friends that they are at personal risk using this service.

If you've been screwed by James and need any help let me know as I'll be glad to assist if I can. I hate people that screw others like that and that hide from their responsibilities. - Mon, 26 Jan 2009 12:22pm Edited: Mon, 26 Jan 2009 12:25pm

"They show up one night, and the driver backed my car into a truck in the parking lot."

What the hell? Was he drunk?
I've moved my car from spot to spot in that lot after some drinks and never hit anything. How can someone do that sober while driving a car that's not theirs with the owner in it?
Then they don't pay?
I'm glad my suspicions about that company were justified.

Yup yup. Friendly service, reasonable prices (for the service), and they even have referal bonuses and pre-paid cards available. They're also on facebook and, to the best of my knowledge, have a web site too.

Will definitely check them out. Thanks, Doc.

How's the wait time on the weekends? I remember waiting 4+ hours for Dial a Driver before... and they don't even have the courtesy to call and tell you they'll be late. - Tue, 27 Jan 2009 7:31am Edited: Tue, 27 Jan 2009 7:32am

I've personally never waited more than 30 min for call mom's. I've never tried calling on a Friday or Saturday though. I know if you ask them they'll give you an honest guess as to how long they'll be.

I don't know if that's your real email in your user info, but I tried to send you a message about several far more serious problems I've had.

"- I was using them about once a week getting home after jam"

I just want to say thank you, seriously. If you're talking about the Esq jam spot, that parking lot sucks to get in and out of, especially if the trucks from the marble/fiberglass shop are in the way. I've only received a few rides home after practice. You using them regularly, that impresses me. Sorry that they screwed you around, but you are doing the right thing by not driving. - Wed, 11 Mar 2009 1:10pm

Hey badfish, just got one of your emails for the first time but had to fish it out of my junk folder (pun intended). Email me back.

I also have it on good authority that there have been numerous other issues with Dial a Driver.

One example being some male drivers hitting on or taking advantage of drunk female passengers.

Talk about low.

Anyways, HUGE thumbs up to Mom's.

Use them - 250-507-6515 and spread the word.

And yeah doc, haven't waited more than 30 minutes either. - Wed, 11 Mar 2009 1:19pm Edited: Wed, 11 Mar 2009 1:20pm
Dial This!
User Info...
I've used Dial a driver on about a dozen occasions. Although you may sometimes have to wait up to an hour or so when you call them at busy times, they are there when they say they will. Plan ahead, set up a time in advance and they'll be there. Their rates may be even better than Mom's by looking at their site (Mom's). They indicate on their Facebook site that they are fully insured so I'm assuming they are. Nothing but good service for this guy. I'm sure Mom provides good service from the sounds of it, but I'll continue to use Dial a Driver. - Tue, 30 Nov 2010 12:06pm

I've never used any of these services, as I don't drink enough for it to really be a consideration, but I just had to comment on the lastest comments from Dial This! .. seems prudent to actually read a thread before making a comment like that.. clearly you missed the part where it was explicitly stated that the whole reason behind this complaint was Dial a Driver's apparent LACK of insurance, despite their claims to be "Fully Insured".

Either that or you are associated with Dial a Driver.. Hmmm.. "Dial a Driver" - "Dial This!" .. makes you wonder. - Tue, 30 Nov 2010 3:31pm

This seems so juvenille! If you people are actually old enough to be running a legitimate business, I would be very surprised. One company needs to post made up nonsense about another competitor's company, to increase their own business. Common kids!!! This isn't high school anymore. No one will take either of your companies seriously if this kind of immature behaviour goes on. BTW Mom's, this is so transparent even a complete outsider like me can see what you are trying to do. Remember the golden rule. Do onto others........ - Tue, 30 Nov 2010 7:32pm

Cindy Taylor, I'm not sure who you are referring to but if you are in any way questioning MY initial post or any of the facts contained, I can guarantee you it is all true and I have the documentation to prove it including official documents issued by ICBC (and ignored by James).

I've had great service from Mon's ever since. I've never had need to test if their insurance is valid thankfully.

Dial This, I'm glad you resurrected this thread so we can keep warning people with the truth about James and Dial-a-Driver. - Wed, 1 Dec 2010 8:54am Edited: Wed, 1 Dec 2010 11:52am

Honestly, I heard about Dial-a-Driver, $2 more then a Taxi? There's a ripoff there, especially cause the Taxi is cheaper. Although, careful if you get an East Indian taxi driver, a lot of them are morons, always call Blue Bird cause they rock! And nuff said... - Sun, 5 Dec 2010 1:17am

Oh to get you and your car home? Now that makes a lot more sense. Still, I don't get why people do that only cause I don't drive anyways. If your gonna drink a lot keep the car at home, can you trust someone you don't know to drive your car? - Sun, 5 Dec 2010 1:08pm Edited: Sun, 5 Dec 2010 1:09pm
