I went into McDonalds this morning and asked for a big mac meal. The guy at the counter was like "Sorry, we're out of big macs. See if that guy'll sell you one". So there's this guy in the corner reading a book with a huge pile of cold big macs and I ask him how much and he says "$20". "Why so expensive?" I ask, and he says "Supply and demand, asshole. Plus I gotta give 10% to the counter guy."

Just kidding. I went to ticketmaster's website today and tried to buy Fleetwood Mac tickets. I refreshed the page frantically, I'm sure I clicked the link sometime between 10:00:00 and 10:00:10, I got lucky with the security words (they were both legible the first time), and I found that there were no tickets left (except for the worst of the $200 ones.) I was hoping for $90 ones (the mid range ones), or even the shitty $50 ones behind a pillar in the back or whatever.

So when I couldn't find tickets at the precise time they were availlable, the website directed me to ticketexchange, which is a scalping site owned by ticket master and off of which ticket master scrapes another buck.

Does this seem wrong to anyone else? I know lots of people like to say shit like "It's just the facts of life man, deal with it", but even from ticket master's perspective... why am I ever going to try to give them money again? I feel like they're going to lose a lot of customers.

And from an arts perspective it's terrifying. There is no way for anyone except the super super rich to see fleetwood mac. I bet there are some people who will buy the tickets just because they're expensive, like a status symbol. Like they would look awesome hanging out the back pocket of some $500 rock and republic jeans. - Mon, 26 Jan 2009 10:33am

The one thing Pearl Jam did that made me not dislike them for 5 seconds was the Ticketmaster boycott.
This company kind of falls under the monopoly classification in a way. They should be disassembled. - Mon, 26 Jan 2009 1:31pm

It seems wrong to me.
I love Pearl Jam.
Are there really such a thing as $500 jeans?

Personally I wouldn't bother with this Ticketexchange. I would however, support an enterprising hustler who was working the streets in front of the show, buying and selling tickets. - Mon, 26 Jan 2009 2:32pm

You must have missed the thread a few months back where I called them filthy corporate cunt-whores for exactly the same thing.

There is something very slimey about it, but I can't personally prove that there ARE actually tickets left even after they say sold out. (I just tend to believe that the company is totally capable of such things).

Another irony is that Ticketmaster is working in certain communities where scalping is totally illegal to relax those laws which they originally helped to get created to stop piracy and higher-than-face-value sales. They have a different take on it now that they have one of the worlds largest resale opporunities. (At much higher than face value of course)

If ALL bands were willing to boycott TM, it might work. Pearl Jam was big enough that they don't have problems finding companies to sell tickets for them no matter what city their in. I've heard stories of TM having been snubbed by other bands in say Seattle, but then when that band went to play at madison square gardens, TM wouldn't work with them because of the past infidelity. Of course some venues sign agreements to use only TM for ticket-related work.

Total bullshit anyway, the entire issue is. I agree with TC. Go find yourself a 'reputable' scalper. Trouble is, that industry is going the same way. In fact some of the tickets on Ticketexchange are the very ones that would normally be prowling the night air outside the venue.

The industry should switch to a credit card based transaction through fan clubs. Each band or sport club could sell their own tickets directly to the people and let Ticketmaster die a slow, painful death. - Thu, 29 Jan 2009 2:58am

That's a good idea Mr. Hell.

"In fact some of the tickets on Ticketexchange are the very ones that would normally be prowling the night air outside the venue."

I actually think "reputable" scalpers are as bad as ticket exchange. It's not like people have to prowl anymore, unless they can't sell their tickets on usedvictoria. Also, it's common now to buy extra tickets even if you're "not a scalper". Maybe you are just "paying off your ticket". Whatever it is, it means I have to pay double for something and that's bullshit. I will never pay double. I'm not gonna pay scalpers to fuck me twice; once when they sell out the venue and once when they take my money. - Fri, 30 Jan 2009 8:42am

Pay too much for tickets, or miss out and have to hunt some down since scalpers, radio shows and people who don't give a shit about the bands claim the tickets... then get shit from SOFA for no reason. Seriously, fuck security guards. I know they're just hired for the night but they're always giving me shit for something. Concerts aren't an enjoyable experience. I'm still young, maybe they used to be before ticketmaster online, and before security thought they were cops? Crowd also ruins them.. I will not see shows at Sugar because the crowd ruins the show.. fucking girls in their heels at a metal show? Taking pictures to upload on facebook instead of listening to the music (which is kinda the whole point). Something about the energy... Or maybe I just hate people in general, and would rather listen to a band's album at home without some little-man-syndrome hot headed jock pushing everyone around looking for a fight infront of me, yelling to his pals, while I'm trying to focus on the music rather than telling this asshole to shut the fuck up. Last month I went to the McPherson box office to get tickets to tomorrow's Meshuggah show. Tickets were $25. And the service charge...$ 12!!! The people at the counter seemed embarassed about the fee and suggested I sought other means.

Tried the Commodore Ballroom website. This linked to LiveNation, where tickets could be purchased. Not cool either, but ok. But not till after the final purchase had been made online, was a confirmation email sent out by fucking Ticketmaster with the same service charge!

What the fuck!

Now, I don't mind paying $ 37 to see Meshuggah play a headlining show with Cynic supporting. It's going to be fucking awesome and 12 dollars are not enough of a grievance to be stupid enough not to go anyway.

But it's about the principle. How the fuck is it possible that a service charge for a $25 ticket has to be 50 percent?? What exactly am I paying for? Does it cost 12 dollars to have some clown in an office hit the print button and put the tickets and envelope in the "mail out" tray?

Not living in Vancouver makes it unlikely that this fucking monopoly could be bypassed without a lot of hassle. But I'd like to know how they justify such extortion. - Sat, 7 Feb 2009 2:50pm

BC people can't currently join, but they are taking submissions from other provinces.

http://www.ticketmasterclassaction.com/

This action is specific to the selling of tickets beyond face value, both in the form of service charges and the more recent ticketsnow type of scams.

Oh ya, and just to make things even happier, TM and LiveNation are in talks of merging (or TM buy-out). The selection just keeps getting narrower. - Wed, 11 Feb 2009 12:37pm Edited: Wed, 11 Feb 2009 12:39pm

Does Canada not have similar laws as the states in regards to monopolies? i.e. Antitrust laws.

Edit:

NM, found the answer myself. Hopefully someone will decide to go a little further with TM other than a class action. Might want to start writing your MP and put pressure on them to actually use the act to put TM in their place. I can already see 2 infractions, if I'm reading the info correctly, price fixing and predatory pricing.

Ontario is trying to get legislation passed that would not let TM to also operate TicketsNow.

As it Happens on CBC laid into a lawyer/exec for Ticetmaster tonight. It was pretty fuckin awesome. Obviously barbara budd has been burned by the company like everyone else. If it was any company but Ticketmaster I would have thought she was being harsh even.

No link to the podcast yet, but check: http://www.cbc.ca/aih if you want to hear it tomorrow. (I'm praying they include that segment)
