So at first it was cool to download movies that you wanted to see but really didn't have the want to pay for, but then as I browsed through pirate bay, I soon found that there is a wealth of useful information.
I found videos, tutorials and documentaries ranging from recording, photoshop, human anatomy, history, economics and all the like. Add in a ipod touch and take the videos on the go.

what do you use torrents for?
any useful sites other than pirate bay? - Sat, 10 Jan 2009 4:56pm

movies, tv shows, applications, instrument packs and samples, comics, e-books (fiction, textbooks, how-to guides, etc). pretty much anything. like Keith up there, I tend to use soulseek for music, or just google searches for "artist name + album name site: mediafire.com" going through all the major upload sites. I know I spend way more on music than the average consumer, when I do like what I hear. mp3s are just my try-before-I-buy or on-the-go listening... the full experience is in the art, inserts, and such. I nearly always go directly through the band, their label, the label's associated distro, or a locally owned record store.

torrentz.com searches most of the major torrent sites, including pirate bay. I'll use either. - Wed, 14 Jan 2009 3:56pm

for the music finding part, I like to use iLike.
it attaches to itunes and shows up for any song you are playing.
it shows mainstream artists and indie bands that are similiar to the music you're listening to. the indie bands let you download their songs for free. - Thu, 15 Jan 2009 3:03pm

if you dont wanna wait for movies, tv eps. etc.. longer than an eternity... try using newsgroups, irc's, or even private sites(sign up, no cost) have lots of zero-day sources/files... I also have a link (at home) which i will post, that searches for private sites that have come open to registration(they have transfer rates that go from 100 kb/s to maxing out your connection)... for example, it took about an hour to d/l 1.38gb(so its def. worth spending some time trying to find a good site rather than using major ones that have everyone leeching and nobody seeding) - Thu, 15 Jan 2009 3:55pm

haha newsgroups and irc. reminds me of around the year 2001, that's how I used to get dreamcast games, pc apps, and pc games back in the day. alt.binaries.games, good ol' "abg". I used to do a share of EFNet and DALnet lurking too. I still use IRC to get specific roms and stuff but it seems like most of what I want is on bit torrent and I don't mind waiting a night or so.

as for the music finding part, I was talking about music I already know I want. to find new bands I like, I'll use last.fm sometimes. but usually, and more often, I find new bands because they'll do split 7"s with bands I like, or be mentioned in the liner notes of bands I like, or be touring with bands I like. - Fri, 16 Jan 2009 2:51am Edited: Fri, 16 Jan 2009 2:53am

yeah newsgroups and irc are old; but they still provide a strong source for stuff you already know you want...
as for music, i used to use "oink.com" which had just about everything imaginable.
I just recently found a decent music site(torrents)... when I get home i'll post a link to it.
It seems your into more local(as in smaller, not necessarily local to victoria) style/touring type bands... hard to find less well known stuff on the torrents sites; though they do have their fair share of music to be had.

^^^^ the above link is a site which tracks open registration to torrent sites for faster speeds... keep in mind that they are also ratio building sites(what you download you must upload).
ps, theres a couple great music sites that are on that list too. - Fri, 16 Jan 2009 9:19am

I regularly get speeds up to 1000kb/s off Demonoid on popular new items.. Ive even gone over that.. rarely but its happened.

Beats the hell out of getting an eyeball buzz staring at IRC waiting forever for a queue and dealing with some uber-nerd room rules! - Fri, 16 Jan 2009 10:25am

wow, i've never gotten good speeds off a public site. (i thought demonoid was a ratio building site?).
The only complaint I have with public sites is that you have to(if you want a decent speed) be restricted to 'new stuff'(movies, music etc...)... yet the private/ratio building sites have alot more to choose from.
(i rarely use IRC for anything anymore; but its a good source sometimes...as with newsgroups) - Sat, 17 Jan 2009 11:35am

Demonoid is a private site that requires an invite (or they open for registration once per month too I think.. )

but they arent ratio based.. they do record the ratio, but its not held against the account in any way if its under. - Fri, 23 Jan 2009 3:46am

yeah that's what I thought... I signed up for demonoid thru the site that tracks open invites. There isn't many people seeding what they download on there though.
I use bitsoup.org and the past month has increase in users almost 100x. For example, on demonoid I could have d/l'd defiance with 2 seeders and 10 leechers... or on bitsoup I could get it at 600+ seeders to less than 50 leechers(myself included lol). Buuuuuut, demonoid has alot of shit that I couldn't find on bitsoup... so using multiple sites, for me, has been the way to go(even ratio building sites). If i had invites, I would totally give them out but I think I need a better ratio before I get some :S - Fri, 23 Jan 2009 11:30am

Are you guys all on Shaw, and do they ever give you a hard time about bandwidth usage? I know that years ago when peer to peer was getting really popular Shaw shut off my connection with no notice for too much usage. - Sat, 24 Jan 2009 11:23am

nah now they just limit your connection to a certain bandwidth and charge extra for the higher bandwidth packages. - Sat, 24 Jan 2009 12:11pm

I haven't had a restriction just yet; but I know of a couple people who, literally, just went thru a battle about this with shaw.
My suggestion is dont upload more than 100g's a month, and you're fine... i've d/l'd more than 100g's worth of media per month and still haven't gotten any restrictions; yet when I have friends who've UPloaded more than their fair share... shaw got pissed at them.
Maybe just luck that I've slipped under the radar; but otherwise download, download, download! - Sat, 24 Jan 2009 1:35pm

the upload issue is Shaw having to be careful that people aren't using their home computers as LARGER servers. Using it for a casual server site is cool, but if your are "sub-letting" bandwith, you're cutting shaw's grass.
And no one fucks with shaw. - Sat, 24 Jan 2009 2:57pm

not only does Shaw restrict total upload bandwidth, they also put a restriction on upload speeds. you guys should notice that upload speeds are like 20% of download speeds. that's something I hate. ESPECIALLY when I'm uploading stuff to my -real- web server, one I pay monthly for.

as for how much you can download in a month, they outline it on their site in the various packages. usually if you double your maximum, that's when you get a call. if you're nice to them and claim ignorance, they'll let you off the hook. but who needs more than 100gb a month? how many 1.5 TB HDDs do you have??? - Sat, 24 Jan 2009 3:28pm

" but who needs more than 100gb a month? how many 1.5 TB HDDs do you have??? "

well, I d/l all the tv shows I like(no commercials), movies, music... but delete the movies when Im done with them(or have seeded them enough). So its VERY easy to go over the 100gigs a month.
each tv show being at least 400mb(hd .x264 quality), and movies being a 700mb minimum for dvd quality... its way too easy to go over. - Sat, 24 Jan 2009 3:37pm
