Hello fellow musicians!

My name is Josh Gellman and I am in charge of booking bands to play at the Cambie Nanaimo, Esquimalt Inn Victoria and Malone’s on Seymour in Vancouver. I am writing to ask for your involvement in the first ever Cambie Battle of the bands at Malone’s. I know that this seems like somewhat of a high school type event, but we did it in Nanaimo and Vic, and it was great fun, and gave me a chance to see perspective bands and what they’re capable of in terms of performance and fan base. It’s basically a big foot in the door for anyone who might be interested in getting a Fri/Sat. Island tour at some point in the future as well as shows at Malone’s. We are offering a discount at the bar and on the menu, and prizes of $1000, $200, and $100 for the 3 finalists. I’m looking for 27 bands. So round one is 9 nights, round 2 is 3 nights, and the finals 1 night. It will be taking place every Saturday night starting on Feb. 21 through May. Please let me know if you or anyone you know may be interested.

Thank you,

I think it is really uncool that not only are you having the bands play for free, there's no bar tab or free meals for the band, and you charge a cover to our friends! Works out pretty sweet for the bar...

Not to mention that there was no- one working production at Esquimalt, on the night I played, the first band basically had no PA, and I quickly had to get the damn thing running for my act.

Then, when I played Nanaimo, again no bar tab, and I had to pay the house for barely adequate production.

I don't know when it came into fashion for venues to leech off performers, but this seems to me to be one of the worst examples of parasitism I've witnessed in my 25 years in this industry.

The more power to you Josh, I'm sure you'll find bands desperate enough to play. Oh, and the word you were looking for was "prospective"...

(These opinions are solely my own and do not necessarily reflect those of any act with which I may be affiliated...) - Sun, 4 Jan 2009 10:35am Edited: Sun, 4 Jan 2009 10:39am

Believe me, as a musician there are some moral issues involved with booking a Battle of the bands. The fact of the matter is that it is really the best way for me to see what bands can do and entertain the possibilty of booking them in the future. Also, in terms of a tab, the discount often ends up saving bands more than what the tab would have been. I have considered many aspects, and agree that we are still a work in progress. Thanks for your input, as negative as it may have been.

P.S. I still really like your band!! - Sun, 4 Jan 2009 6:52pm

Thank you, and I hope you understand that I have nothing to do with bookings, I am just the bass player. I play where we play.

However, it seems to me in a town of this size it is pretty easy to get a handle on who the prime acts are. Word of mouth seems the way to go in most industries and I don't feel that music is really any different in this aspect.

Really though, it's going to come down to what incentives you provide the acts. The acts you attract will ultimately depend on what you offer, and how painless it is to play your room.

We need you, the venues. I certainly do not dispute this, and I appreciate any room that will book local acts, and it would be nice to feel that you want us, the acts. Honestly, besides production (or lack of (which is always a beef of mine)), my only real bitch was the cover on the battle of the bands. We were playing for free, let our fans(?)/ friends see us for free. (Or use the door to cover our bar tab?) - Sun, 4 Jan 2009 7:54pm Edited: Sun, 4 Jan 2009 7:56pm

meh, Battles like these give shitty bands the oportunity to play and get exposure. Its not like established bands are playing the battles. Perhaps a couple beers/band would be nice, but I could totally see the cover charge because bars are in the business to make money.

Shit, my old band played a couple of these. We made some great contacts in the industry and each came out better for it. People started to recognize the individual talent in our band and we each went on to a better project (admittedly 90% of our songs sucked).

Bands that are just starting out are "Entitled" to nothing. There are 50 other bands right behind them to fill their place. Entitlement is earned and shouldn't be expected.

Thats my rant. Cheers, Lucius - Fri, 30 Jan 2009 9:12am

I definitely agree with the un-coolness of charging a cover and not passing compensation on to the bands providing the entertainment.

If you (the bar) want to use the excuse that this is essentially just an audition platform for future gigs, then don't charge a cover.

Generally, auditions are NOT open to the public.

When bands play in front of real customers, they are the ones providing the entertainment and deserve compensation of some kind.

So yes, uncool to charge cover and pay bands nothing. For the sake of your reputation as a club, please compensate bands fairly. Especially local bands since they will be the ones talking negatively or positively about you and the clubs you represent. - Fri, 30 Jan 2009 2:09pm
