| Jeff From The Perish User Info... | hey everyone, our site is fucked up so sorry if you're having problems with it. We're switching servers very soon and these problems won't happen anymore. Yes some of those track titles were on out site before, but only live raw recordings of a few songs. Those live tracks are crap. The studio versions with mulitple guitars and a more layered sound are much better. Also some of those live rehearsal mp3s were while we were writing the songs, and they have matured into better songs now. As for your religion sucks and the Devil's Lettuce.... well... you'll just have to wait and see. But I agree, that lettuce at Wendy's is pretty sad, and only the Devil himself could get any enjoyment out of watching someone eat it. And maybe the guy that works there that spat on your lettuce because he saw you talking to his girlfriend earlier. Actually The Devil's Lettuce is going to be the new 4:20 song for 2009. They dont have anything to do with the artists actual product, just where it gets played, when (or by who if a cover song ) and live shows, radio play, video play etc. Any 'royalties' would be paid to you for product sales by your distributor, label, or your buddy at the store that lets you throw a couple CD's at the counter. and secondly, being an unsigned indy band with no real name for themselves yet, you should be overjoyed that somebody would take the time to burn 100's of your product and distribute them for you free of charge! Yesser, you are free to have at er with my bands demo material and when we get a CD out next year can you PLEASE burn and give away a few hundred? Thatd be great man., we'll make up for the 'loss' by selling more tickets and shirts. Well, this time... I'm totally lost. I have no idea what anyone is talking about. So, I won't comment on anything exept the album. Tonight is the release. Sorry the samples didn't get up sooner, but we had a split pipe at the studio and a real frickin' mess to deal with. Fortunately no equipment was damaged, just walls and floors. For our special friends here on live vic, I am going to do something special for Christmas. I will be posting several links soon to FREE downloads of some of our new songs of the album for you to download, enjoy, critisize, mock, rock out to... what ever floats your boat. Like Mike S said, you have someone willing to produce and distribute your material at no cost to you. While that does mean less sales for you, it does mean a greater chance of your music reaching people who otherwise wouldn't have bought it because A. they don't care, B. they've never heard of your band, C. they don't know the CD exists. Told me you're a Internet Tech. , that explains why all the harpin' about my website : ( I'm just a musician dude... I think for a musician I do pretty good and have fun making my own websites. I get lots of emails from people saying how cool our website is because it's so different. And this new Online store and the digital download center are pretty slick now I think you'll find. My skills at PHP and patching together fun little scripts is getting better don't ya think ? KRIEG - I did answer you dude.. read my last post. as for the CD-R thing... I though you were joking man... trying to just slag near Christmas. yea... I'm going to dup off few hundred CD-Rs out of my laptop and hope they all work for everyone I send them to. UMMMM no. I've worked too hard for all this. Professional CD pressing, 4 page booklet, nice graphics and photos, all the lyrics... the full deal. I hate boring shit. ( hence the website ) I know when I buy an actual CD I really look forward to all the little stuff inside the booklet. No booklet ? not cool. Makes me feel like... hey.. I bought their album , but the cheaped out. NOT COOL. as for Bruce there... we've all been up for like 75 hours, and now I believe bruce is at work there till 7:00... and the pipes, and Christmas and this fuckin' weather... it's all been a lot. There's a half dozen or so, self proclaimed "music industry experts" in here that have been sqwalling and harping on us for 5 YEARS. It gets a bit tidious when all we're trying to do is promote ourselves via LIVE VICTORIA'S MUSIC SCENE website. We don't come here to complain about other bands or slag shows. THEY don't have anything to promote but petty grievences about how we aren't just like every other band. Our website isn't generic enough. Our artwork isn't the SAME as everyone else's. Cookie Monster isn't our vocalist. We don't play at 380bpm. We don't put on a $50,000.00 show at their bar and pay them for the 'privledge'. We're not doing the Royal Theater Show again and again and again. Bitch, bitch, bitch. bitch...that's all these NON-MUSICIANS(and some musicians)do. So if I came across as defencive, I apologize. | Doc User Info... | So I listened to all the songs, thanks for the links Jeff, and here is a little constructive criticism and also, hopefully some helpfull hints. First, and I have said this before, you guys REALLY need a new singer/lyricist. I'm not trying to be mean, but Jeff, or whoever is singing, is just bad. The songs are at the extreme top of his range and it shows. The lyrics are not good either. They're not even showing potential, they're just not good. Now, on to the part that I hope are more helpful hints. I would like to begin with an issue I notices in the tracks Wooden Door and Not Real, and that's the mix. The overall sound was good in all of the songs, but I thought that the vocals were too loud in the mix for Wooden Door, and the drums were too loud in Not Real. Nothing major, just something to consider tidying up before doing a second production run on your disc. Overall I thought that it was a good effort. I felt that almost all of the songs, with the exception of Love & a Shotgun, were too short and that there was not enough changes in them. I particularly liked the main riffs in Turpentine, Not Real and Love & a Shotgun. I also enjoyed the little guitar melody/riff between the verses in Devil's Lettuce. I hope that you guys can take these opinions and use them to improve your overall level of performance. | sumyungai User Info... | Hey Jeff et al So I've spent the last fourteen hours or so with your tracks (thanks, btw) and listened to them on various systems (including my car and my own studio) and my first comment has to be that you have issues in your mix environment. Do your product a favour and mix it in a real control room with properly tuned acoustics. There are some serious lumps in the bottom end, and while mastering can clean up some of the bottom end issues, it can't replace what isn't there. The whole thing sounds like it was mastered with a 'smiley face' EQ curve in that the mids (primarily low mids) are almost non- existent. Some low mids would particularily help your vocals 'pop' and sound more full. I also feel that you really need to work on the dynamics of your mixes. A few more fader moves would really work wonders for evening out the flow of the songs. As to the music itself I would have to say it is quite marketable (though not my cup of tea), and if you can pull these songs off I think you'd be a fun band to go see live. There is an eighties metal feel to your songs that still would find an audience today. Oh and Bruce, no offence mate, but you really need to pull your head in. It really is ridiculous how people here on LiveVic have gotten you riled. Your music doesn't suck, so chill and enjoy marketing your product. I firmly believe you will be much more satisfied with the Audio Quality of the actual CD over these mp3s. Did you burn them to a CD-R to hear them in your car ? or do you have a stereo in your car that has mp3 upload capabilities ? Either way, they're still squashed mp3s not the real audio. I have heard the mp3s and the real CD back to back on the same systems and they do NOT sound alike. That being said, I will likey make new mixes specifically for mp3s. Oh yea, also some of the things you suggest would require money we don't have. I'm sure if we make it huge, we could then afford to cut our tracks in Abby Road Studios. Which would be sweet. I think they even started out with a crappy 4 track real to real and a four channel mixer didn't they ? so.. thanks everyone, Merry Christmas... Also, please don't try to excuse the mixes by blaming it on the mp3 transfer. We all know that mp3 is a necessary evil, however a good mix is going to sound good regardless of how badly it is processed post production (ie. radio). Again, I refer to the Beatles, the mixes sound amazing regardless of where you hear them. However a mediocre mix can sound great under certain circumstances, but will reveal flaws when mangled by consumer post processing. (Ever listen to your mixes with Dolby Prologic engaged? It can be soul crushing, however you can guess that a certain percentage of your audience will.) When mixing we always had a single mono 5" full range speaker called an Auratone (Horrortone) that we used to ensure mono compatibility as well as simulating real world listening conditions. If it sounded like crap on the Horrortone we scrapped the mix and started again. Also, your mixes do seem to fail the mono test, phasing is something that you should look into when recording stereo effects. If you own the mix gear (which apparently you do) then there are no constraints on you to achieve great mixes other than the working environment (acoustics) and the talents of the mix engineer. I just realized that I had the " compress audio " checked when converting to mp3... which ruined the mids. I am going to re-upload tonight, if I can get to the studio. The roads are frickin' bad. So Doc, I've got some pretty got spectrum analizing equipment, and I always listen back at mix time at a perfect 85db so... I think it is laudable that Jeff, Bruce et al are proud of their work and have obviously worked hard at their craft (hundreds of hours, Bruce?) but the defensive tone of both Jeff and Bruce's posts suggest that perhaps there are deeper issues here. For me the whole Perish thing seems to be an attempt by these guys to become BIG ROCK STARS; everything else is a by product of that goal. Certainly the funniest quote I have read on this message board all year was Jeff's fervent assertion that "I have no ego" which is about 180 degrees from what I think is the truth. All the talk about Save-on-Foods gigs, Sony, Universal... it all smacks of a sort of pathetic wannabe mindset that would be tolerable if the product that is expected to lead to all this stardom were any good at all. Alas it is not, something that even Jeff admits (and has a zillion excuses for, at least sonically). As music this new Perish product is prety pro forma (despite the "rippin' guitars, "solid drums" and the curiously described "well planned bass lines"); I think it sounds like "Survival" or "E Puribus Funk" era Grand Funk Railroad or maybe late period Bloodrock which is to say that it is expedient boogie-rock crap that would have been lameassed in 1970. The singing is barely adequate, the playing wooden and perfunctory, even the mix is typical of this kind of stoner rock; big fat "happy face" EQ (there should be no MAJOR difference between the mp3 and CD mixes Jeff). The lyrics are purile at best and suggest a 15 year old headbanger rather than a 30 something adult ("the Devil's Lettuce", how subtle). A record like that which is made on an almost daily basis by like minded individuals almost everywhere where it is obvious that the music on the "product" is merely a by-product of a much deeper quest: the quest for mega-rock-stardom. So why do we all care? Under normal circumstances most of us would be too bored with this crap to puke at it but this thread has literally hundreds of posts on it. Why? Could it be the literally unbelieveable claims made by Jeff about the record industry's interest in his "group"? The litany of imaginary posters supporting the Perish and their cause (posters that were eventually exposed as pseudonyms of the artist himself slapping himself on the back)? The crazy Royal Theatre gig which was by all accounts a catastrophe that elicited belly laughs by all that were fortunate enough to witness it (although the Perish themselves considered it a "great success" despite an attendance of only a couple dozen paying customers in a room that holds hundreds). The promise of an even BIGGER and BETTER show at the even bigger SOFMA (sadly unfullfilled)? The plans to support Led Zeppelin if and when that band ever reconvenes? The doctored videos of the bands live performances (where did you get all that applause Jeff, "Kiss Alive"?) where it is obvious that there are almost no people at the gig (and, it seems, that most of them are children)? The claims of extraterrestrial beings being involved? It's all too much to absorb for some of us and there is a part of me that is uncomfortable at deriving musement by all the curious machinations of the Perish, like picking on the special needs kid at school. But you guys keep coming back for more so what the hell. The "licensing agreement" on the Perish website is so aggressive and confrontational that I'm betting ANY radio program director reading it wouldn't touch this band with a 10 foot cattle prod; this just in, threatening to SUE people who "illegally" listen to your music, or even share it with their friends isn't going to make you any friends in the music business. "Our mp3 store is set up to bust you if you try to share a downloaded link with someone who hasn't paid for it"? Who the fuck to you think you are, Lars Ulrich? With stuff this bad you need every friend you can get guys. Your attitude towards "sharing" your music reminds me of the old British musician's union and their belief that radio play somehow cut into record sales which resulted in the ridiculous concept of "needle time" (where the BBC could only play a song once or twice a day; at least this archaic belief led to the establishment of the legendary Peel sessions). You guys have proven to me that you simply haven't got a clue how the music business works. Turning yourselves into the laughingstock of Victoria will NOT turn you into rich and famous rockstars. | Jeff From The Perish User Info... |  Sorry about the delays with the music stuff. I had some famliy issues to deal with as my grandfather passed away on Christmas eve. Also... I was not thrilled with the mix and mastering of our new songs... and after reading some really usefull constructive critizism by people that proved to have actual studio knowledge, I felt it was unanomous that the album must be re-mixed. So... we've spent endless nights burning the midnight oil and did so. I agreed with sumyoungguy who mentioned the missing lower mids. My problem there was the vocals were thin, and I had them as far as I could go volume wise, EQ wise, and compression wise.... so I guess without realizing it I had backed off too much on other instruments ( mainly guitars ) to compensate. THE CURE: god bless tubes. Nice FAT tubes. I ran ALL the vocal tracks through a nice new tube pre-amp we just got for these situations. WHAT a difference, night and day ! this allowed me to re-mix the entire album because I had way more headroom to work with on all other instruments. Also did some tweaks to my mastering tools. | Doc User Info... | Okay, kids are at school, and I've ahd a chance to listen to all of the tracks. I'm not going to comment on the vocals or lyrics, b/c I've made my opinion on that known and revisiting it would not be constructive here. Although, I can say that after another listen through of the album, the vocals themselves are not bad, not great, but not bad. A few general comments that can apply to almost every song on the album. 1.) The bass follows the guitar too much. There needs to be more variation in the bass parts, this will make your songs more dynamic. Also, your bass player should play with his fingers instead of a pick. Nothing is as big a turn off to me as the sound of a pick on bass strings, and it's not like he's playing anything overly difficult. 2.) While the mix is generally a lot better, I think that the guitar solos could be brought up a bit more. I found that they tended to get lost in the rhythm part at times. Now for some song specific comments. 1.) Turpentine - While I thought that the quality of the vocals was generally good you seemed to be straining in this song a little. It could maybe be played down half a step and that might fix the problem. 2.) Not Real - I found the guitar tone to be annoyingly tinny, I made a general comment about guitar tone in my last post that I would like to now rescind, as the toen was good with one or two exceptinos, this being one of them. 3.) I Don't Want You Any More - production wise I thought this song was fine, but the band ws a little sloppy coming out of the first chorus. 4.)Soda Can - Right before the solo, the vocals seem to go a bit to high for your range. 5.)Inside I Rust - I wrote in my notes taht the vocals could come down in the mix a little, but after a second listen I'm not totally sure, this might just be a taste issue. The intro riff was really cool and I was a little disappointed that it wasn't featured again until the very end of the song. 6.)She's An Animal - This is another song where the key seems to be too highfor your vocal range. This is also the other song where I thought the guitar tone was tinny. 7.) Wooden Door - I thought that the guitars in general could come up more int he mix. 8.)Your Religion Sucks - The hi-hat was too loud, overpowering everything else inthe mix, even the other drums. Also, and I realize that won't sound that constructive, I think the little sample thingy at the end of the song is just flat out lame and should be removed. 9.)Love & A Shotgun - I loved this tune. I thought it was catchy and interesting. It's the only tune that I actually saved the download from. This is the tune that you should shove down peoples throats to gain popularity. While I don't necessarily expect you to act on all of the comments that I've made here, I hope that they provide you with a good starting pont for improving your band and ultimately achieving your goals. I would like to say however, that I agree with BBJones about the song writing, for the most part. I think that the level of musicianshipp far outstrips the song writing abilities (except Love & A Shotgun, I really like that song). For example, try uploading a song to garageband then upload the same song to myspace and there are often noticeable differences in the end result. Even the bitrate used by different bands when they upload can make a difference once online file hosting software has its way. for a true comparison, without both final CD's in front of you, you are grasping at straws.. mp3's are NOT a good indication of any products overall sound. About the only thing you could do in this case is upload your music to myspace and then compare to GNR's myspace.. but even that isnt a true indicator. I didn't think about myspace having a different compression.. that's a good point. I suppose then I will have to dust off our myspace account and upload there. I also agree.. It has to be disc to disc comparison for a truly fair analysis. That being said however both Guns n' Roses and our band are trying to also sell mp3s on the net. I personally think It pays to have the mix a little different for the apple ipods and mp3 junk boxes out there then what is on the disc. I took guns n' roses use your illusion II ( which got production awards ) and took the actual disc and loaded their disc and ours onto my ipod. I kid you not ours sounds better. Try it yourself. Ipods are god right now. That's where the " sell " is. If you honestly think ours sounds bad compared to it please let me know. Also consider the huge money and equipment they had. Give me their studio and I'd have more tools to work with. I think since ours is close , if not better in mp3 on ipods.... then we have a shot at taking them out ! and are ready to hit the launch button on 2009.... which is going to be a fun ride. I DON'T think at all that we are better than Guns n' Roses. Chinese Democracy was not recorded by Guns n' Roses. It was recoreded by a bunch of Slash/Duff/Gilby/Matt wanna-be'z. The NEW guns n' roses sucks ass, and I do think we sound better than that. That's not being high on myself at all... that's just a given. A Pre-school class could do better song writing, and production. It's Crap and everyone knows it. As for us " sounding " better than guns n' roses... I was specifically talking about the sound on APPLE IPODs . I am not being high on myself either. Just because I wrote the songs on our album doesn't make me unable to hear the difference between the general sound of two albums on my ipod. I am not being bias, I was saying exacty what I and other hear between our new album and " use your illusion II " on IPODS. go ahead and download ours, and take your use your illusion II album and put that on your ipod too. Then compare them. I think you'll find our album sounds pretty good compared to it on your IPOD. And that also doesn't mean I'm not willing to make further changes to it. There are so many devices out there that sound so different. some are too much low end, some are too much high end. I have 3 sets of headphones for my ipod, and they all sound COMPLETELY different with my ipod set at the same volume with the same settings on the same song. It's harder these days with all the crappy mp3 devices out there taking your disc and putting it into mp3 or mp4 on their ipods... mixed with people using high quality sound systems with your disc.. to get a balanced quality mix on them all. I practice to be sure I can do these things competently. | Mr. Hell User Info... | At least Bruce is conceding that he needs to practice. Admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery. Maybe some lessons would do you good. I don't practice bass or guitar more than 6 hours a week and that seems to be just the right amount for me to perform well enough to not be told I need to practice. I practice vocals whenever I am driving around (not in a garbage truck as Mike claims...too noyesey). You may not have heard me on the Q or the Zone, but you may have seen me on Muchmusic. Or maybe not. You probably never watched the metal show on there. I don't recall claiming I am a huge success. I've done satisfactory for what I would want to achieve. There is more I would like to do. Working on it. One thing I don't do is come on Live Vic and claim I am going to tour with Led Zeppelin or put on $40,000 stage shows and have the biggest band in the world. SATI He was sent an email from live vic stating his password had been deleted and he was issued a numerical temporary password in that email. He did not request his password to be changed. I've been in working bands for about 17 years, and been doing shows and music festivals for about 12. I've been cutting tracks in studios for others and myself for about 15 years. I've done 2 Canadian tours with another act. I've jammed with Kim Mitchell. Perish Productions has been doing music for documentaries, voice overs, and rock music since 1997. I could go on here but won't bother. Bruce has been in the game a while too and has had the pleasure of jamming and hanging out regularly with Randy Bachman and several others who seem to think Bruce is a great drummer. The only new face we have is Devon who is 19 and full of awsome raw tallent that will blow your freakin' mind at our next show. Also, so no one can say I'm high on myself... I have been taking notes on opinions posted here on our new album. Everyone that has proven to me to have some actual sound knowledge.... made some points about the mix.. so yet again I am changing it to cater to public opinion. Some have stuck around for over 2 years with me, so I think if I was not a good teacher I wouldn't have dedicated students like that. Don't harp on my teaching skills when you have never had a lesson from me. I teach with encouragement as my main tool. I remember having a discouraging teacher when I was a little kid. I don't ever talk about myself or what I do or have done during a lesson unless someone directly asks me. Even then I wouldn't elaborate while they sit there for a paid lesson. People that actually know me know I'm not high on myself, or conceated, and I care more about my students progress than any other guitar teacher that I've ever met. I even get birthday presents and christmas presents from most of my students, so I think they're pretty happy with what I do for them. I even spend my own time working on lessons or getting tabs for my students. I don't talk about my band, or aliens, or Motley Crue, or Nastradomis ( wtf as if ) during someone's lesson. That's obsurd. I think it's funny how people are always upset with what I did or said, yet... they weren't there and have no idea if it's true at all. It's like the telephone game you used to play around the campfire at a scouts meeting or something. Everyone whispers the story to the person on the right, but each person puts a little change or spin on it to fuck it up, and by the time the story has gone around the circle..... | Jeff From The Perish User Info... | hey, well yea, I was happy. Bruce apparently isn't. I didn't plan this, it was Bruce's last minute decision, not mine. I only want to re-do the drums for two reasons, neither of which are because I didn't like what Bruce did or anything like that. The fact is, if I submit the album to the label and then say, " by the way... That guy isn't our drummer anymore. " then it leaves them wondering.... is it going to sound as good with a new drummer ? They would be guessing. Also, all the bio photos and album cover and photos have Bruce in them, yet he quit the band. To be fair to the new drummer too, I think they should get to say they played on the album I'm about to promote, and feel like they're a real part of the band. Not just some temporary fill in. And the last reason is... I don't have permission to use Bruce's work, so I couldn't use it if I wanted to. I didn't plan for this, so I'm just going with the flow. And no I don't cut peoples heads out. lol. Bruce cut himself out. If you want to know more on Bruce's reason's for quitting you'll have to email him, because I'm not going to elaborate on the situation here. Basically he has a good job that he likes with lots of benifits, and he decided he didn't want to give that up for the band. That's the jist of it. I am a very fair person and wouldn't just turn on a band member and cut him/her out. It's a team effort to get to the top. I know that more than anyone. | Jeff From The Perish User Info... | well, I too think it's a good business decision to have the drummer on the album, be the same drummer ready to play live and support that album. I agree a major label would want to re-record anyways, but to show them we're ready and stable.... we really have to be. Not in the middle of a drummer swap. How would they know how it's going to sound if they have to guess ? they wouldn't. They would just say " NEXT ! " and that would be that. I don't think allowing the new drummer to be a part of the team and actually record his work on the album is a flimsy reason at all. I think it's not only fair to him/her.... but is a wise business decision. I have been told this is the right move from the people in the industry that are going to help me promote this album, and I respect their views and knowledge. They know what is a good move and what isn't. I'll take their professional opinions without question. I've done all the work in this band. Organizing , promoting, websites, working deals, planning gigs, renting facilities.... and you know it. Devon knows it and appreciates my efforts plenty. He tells me so, which is not what you have been doing. Devon and I are getting along great and have written several new songs and we're having fun jaming as usual. I don't have to yell at Devon to get the fuck out of my house because he doesn't pull shit like that on me and try to get in my face all drunk. Just because some cop harrassed you that day you got hammered and took it out on me and you know it. Fact is you left the band that has done so much for you high and dry when they needed you most. Your total flip out at my house, and the one posted here proves that you have some issues that your guitarist/singer/keyboardist/promoter/friend?/manager/song writter/web master/recording engineer/producer/graphics artist/PR Rep. just can't help you with. You'll get your money but you've left me in an awkward position with everything, so you'll just have to be patient. If you read my post to Bruce you would see I did all I can with the situation. As far as knowing how the music industry works... well, that's something that's constantly changing, and I do my best to keep up. I have my ducks all in a row and I know where it's going to lead. I have the industry professionals behind me that I need, and that's all I need to know. Not what others " think " I'll be able to do with this album once the new drum tracks are layed down. and no, this is not reason enough in my books to call it quits. No one gave a shit about AC/DC until their 6th album. It's all about attitude, and by now you should all know that I will never quit. That's how you make it. How many bands have had drummer problems then recovered fully and then hit the mark ?? lots. I just found a nice $300 double kick on my porch this morning. I'm as in demand as I need and want to be at this time of my life.
