please spread the word on this

Our band Nuvo Wavo - was booked to play a wedding on Dec 6 2008 in Victoria - I did finally get a phone call from a man who said he did not want me to contact the hotel - which I finally did - this is a internet scam - do not cash a cheque for a gig like this - please forward to all any bands and musicians - the person booking us used the name Robert Evans

BEWARE: 419 scammers are going after bands!

Just a public service announcement...

We just got done with almost getting 419 scammed by a Nigerian gentleman. Here’s the gist of the scam: he wants you to play a gig. Payment up front. He sends you a check that grossly overpays you. You put it in the bank, then he soon says the gig doesn’t go through, and asks you to send the money back. By the time you send back the overpayment, your bank will be sending you a nasty-gram to let you know that you are being federally prosecuted for cashing a bogus check... And the Nigerian is laughing at you as they cash *your* check.

Good times.

So be careful, folks. Here’s a nice write-up of an email exchange between the scammer and a band:

As for our lovely scammer, "Mark Evans", here’s his pertinent info:

Cell Phone: 234-176-56838 (Nigerian number)
Email: [email protected]

Spread this far and wide, folks. As for us, I plan on framing our scam check and hanging it on the studio wall... ;) - Fri, 21 Nov 2008 3:34pm Edited: Fri, 21 Nov 2008 3:34pm

I highly doubt any of us would need a heads up. Only the naive and moronic would fall or think others may fall for these scams. - Fri, 21 Nov 2008 6:56pm Edited: Fri, 21 Nov 2008 6:56pm

Have to agree with yesser. When someone wants to hire you for a gig in the city you live in, especially a wedding, you meet face to face regardless of any vids or music samples you have on your site. - Fri, 21 Nov 2008 7:23pm

not true. the all ages shows we put on sometimes involve five or six bands. granted, we usually know each other. but I've put on shows for bands I haven't met. that's kind of how booking hardcore tours works, actually. I'm putting a show on for two bands on dec. 31. I've only had email and mail contact. I'm smart enough to know that they're not Nigerian, though.

the weird part is you being paid ahead of time. that's not very standard. - Sat, 22 Nov 2008 2:16am Edited: Sat, 22 Nov 2008 2:16am

Tyler. I see that you like to respond to posts on here and sound intellectual and experienced. You are not. Re-read the original post and then get back to us. You did not recieve a cheque pre-paying you with a grossly higher amount. OK? I know that didnt happen. You may get booked online without face to face but no one prepays with more money than needed. Only an idiot would fall for it. You replied by dis-agreeing with me, but then saying "getting pre-paid is weird". You need to stop replying to every single thread on here. You are like that highschool kid who thinks he has a band. Your input is useless at best. - Sat, 22 Nov 2008 7:16am Edited: Sat, 22 Nov 2008 7:18am

It may seem like rocket science to you, but to some, this is like taking candy from a baby. It's not that strange to be contacted by a company booking for a large scale wedding (hired production/wedding planners) or a corporate gig and not meet face to face.

How many musicians wouldn't jump at a big money gig? And how many would be blinded by the dollar sign?

My guess is people are falling for this or there wouldn't be warning in difference places online. - Sat, 22 Nov 2008 8:07am

There's no better way to say "I'm a greedy idiot" than to fall for the too-large cheque scam. - Sat, 22 Nov 2008 10:19am

You are missing the point of all this. I am not saying that people don't ask for services without meeting face to face. As Hearse says,

"There's no better way to say "I'm a greedy idiot" than to fall for the too-large cheque scam"

It's not like a scam is simply asking the band to play. The SCAM is to get the band to cash a HIGHER than fee cheque. NO one needs a heads up to this scam. ok?

I have played 100's of shows and i probably never met the venue management once before getting cheque.

You people, READ READ READ, then post. - Sat, 22 Nov 2008 11:17am Edited: Sat, 22 Nov 2008 11:19am

Last time i am saying this. The SCAM is to get you to cash a cheque which is worth MORE than your bands fee. The scam isn't to get you to cash a cheque for 25% and you keep it. You rockstars keep coming on here and adding little useless pieces of information that doesnt change the fact that anyone who even considers accepting a cheque for MORE than a fee are idiots and deserve to be scammed. What now? Someone will come on here and say "But I Got paid in full before a gig" yeah and again, you didn't get paid more than your fee and you didn't have to send/give any of it back. Face it, you fall for this shit you deserve it. - Sat, 22 Nov 2008 5:59pm Edited: Sat, 22 Nov 2008 5:59pm

Easy solution: take the cheque but don't cash it until the gig is over. That's what I do. Provide the service and then get the money. The scam works because some people just can't resist getting the dough in advance of the work. This is a fatal attitude in the music business. In my world if I cash the cheque and spend the dough then something inevitably happens where either I or the other party can't do the job and then there's a huge hassle. My personal policy is do the job and then get paid. - Sun, 23 Nov 2008 11:36pm

Nuvo Wavo are hardly 'young rockstars'

but otherwise, ask any local promoter that regularly brings in tours. They are often sending a percentage of the guarantee out as they mail back the contract. This can be a make it or break it for a promoter taking on such shows, as it can be tough to send out $1000+ months before you see potential return. So being paid in advance isnt uncommon, but would be LESS than what is guaranteed, not more, which could be a clerical error in the case of a legit booker, or in this case an obvious scam. - Mon, 24 Nov 2008 11:47am

"You did not recieve a cheque pre-paying you with a grossly higher amount. OK? I know that didnt happen."

Nope, I didn't. Never said I did. Looks like I'm not the one with a comprehension problem. Half the things you're saying about me weren't even in my post.

"You may get booked online without face to face but no one prepays with more money than needed. Only an idiot would fall for it."

Yeah, that's true. I was disagreeing with Chopper's comment that you always meet face to face.

"You replied by dis-agreeing with me, but then saying "getting pre-paid is weird"."

That's correct. They were two separate, unrelated points. I even used blank space to emphasize this. Who are you again, "Anonymous"? I'm not sure I ever replied by disagreeing with you. I disagreed with a single, minuscule element of Chopper's reply and provided an alternate view.

"You need to stop replying to every single thread on here. You are like that highschool kid who thinks he has a band. Your input is useless at best."

Oh cool. Welcome to the internet. - Tue, 25 Nov 2008 1:12pm Edited: Tue, 25 Nov 2008 1:18pm
