let's just say that mr. kravitz and I have very different views on music and what it should accomplish. also, I know a band that was in a van that flipped 5 times down a bank, resulting in hospitalization and beaten up limbs, yet they hopped back on the tour a few days after the incident. just throwing that out there. - Wed, 5 Nov 2008 11:52am

You have to take into account that these musicians make a shit load more than any local or touring semi-pro/pro group would make doing a circut of bar shows. So yes, I think that he is warranted/allowed to save his voice. If it were me and I were playing a local show, making ends meat; then id probably feel pressured into playing the show and possibly sacrificing my voice to do it. But if I were making money, hand over fist in this case, I would not sacrifice my voice for any show. Its his money maker; can you blame him?

Dont get me wrong, I am not a huge fan of Kravitz(aside from his really old stuff); but I do draw a line when people think they're(high paid musicians) simply "bitching out" of a gig. - Wed, 5 Nov 2008 12:15pm

sure, he's allowed to do whatever he wants. it's just not the kind of thing I'm into, that's all. he makes a ton of money and his choices have worked well for him, especially if he's interested in money. - Wed, 5 Nov 2008 12:25pm

i read he has severe throat problems... sure maybe if he played he'd be a trooper, but he would sound like crap and could harm his voice even more.

yup. Just like the shitty bands that swear that the music they play is the good stuff. If Tyler could contribute .0000001% of what LK has then maybe he would have a different view. Until then we have to deal with shitty musicians and their negative attitudes towards skilled and talented ones. It's been happening ever since Elvis INVENTED music. - Wed, 5 Nov 2008 1:50pm Edited: Wed, 5 Nov 2008 1:51pm

dug myself into a hole. dammit.

what's shitty to you isn't shitty to me, and vice-versa. there is no standard way of grading subjective ideas like "good music" or "bad music." if you were to use commercial success, I listen to some good music and a lot of bad music. and contribution? one could argue that a lot of "unknowns" have contributed way more than lenny kravitz has. maybe not in terms of record sales, but more in terms of stylistic changes and inspiring major label artists. but you're right. I don't really contribute anything.

I wasn't saying that your opinion of Lenny Kravitz's music is wrong; so much as comparing him to a band that has nothing to lose if they were to play a show and be considered a "trooper". That's what i have a problem with. He stands to lose everything if he loses his voice; what do you lose if you play a show and sacrifice your voice? That 1 in a million chance that a rep from a major label comes to the show and signs you for millions of dollars? That would be a pipe-dream at best.
Comparing commercially successful artists to indie artists is like comparing celery to oranges.
Again, its not a matter of your taste in music... i could care less what you think of Lenny Kravitz's music.

and btw, tyler, your original post came off like some highschool kid trying to fit in and making sure the cool crowd didn't think you listend to "bad music".

okay he made a good choice! it sucks that he let his fans down and such though. it's one or the other. I mentioned a band that chose the fans over their own recovery. dumb? maybe.

yeah, I see how saying that could come across that way. I was clearing up the fact that I'm not a fan. because I'm not. was it unnecessary? maybe. it might also save the effort of explanation down the road when board members go "hey tyler! how bummed are you about that concert being cancelled, huh? man, what a tragedy!" - Wed, 5 Nov 2008 2:47pm

not dumb in anyway... its just different when you have something to lose; and that's what i was trying to say in shorter words.
and you dont need to be fan to post the news/facts. Nobody would've questioned you on that. - Wed, 5 Nov 2008 3:31pm

I could sing with no voice. Yeah.... also everyone who's missing out on Lenny Kravitz, come to Black Ships tonight! Also a certain local radio station's music director has theorized that it's not so much about no voice as poor ticket sales. Obviously that's just a rumor and can't be confirmed or taken as fact, but just something to think about. Also please stop grilling me. - Thu, 6 Nov 2008 3:58pm Edited: Thu, 6 Nov 2008 4:01pm

Back-up for second. Earlier in this post Flatulenze claimed that Elvis invented music. Ha ha Hell to the NO. Elvis and his "music" were stolen straight from the gills of black musicians of that era. Elvis was the perfect marketing tool to keep "redneck white America" convinced that they had once again created all great things. Lest we not forget the real inventors of music and RnR Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Screamin' Jay Hawkins(the first true shock rocker) and the others who influenced the King. Sorry but there was no way I could let that remark slide. You may now continue your bickering. - Thu, 6 Nov 2008 8:35pm

Um no, I wouldn't be embarrassed if people knew I had tickets to the show. It just sucks for the people who didn't get to see them, but I guess I don't need to care, since I don't have tickets. Geez. - Fri, 7 Nov 2008 8:46am

I'd exorcise and disown my firstborn son if he came home with tickets to that concert, and then I'd have his room blessed, fumigated and swept for bugs. That's some serious life-destroying shit, the people who sell those tickets are scum. Good on you for staying on the straight & narrow, Tyler.
