Illegal tenters busted again Joanne Hatherly, Times Colonist Published: Friday, October 31, 2008 Activist David Johnston was arrested at Victoria City Hall's Centennial Square this morning. Sgt. Grant Hamilton of Victoria Police Department says that night duty officers reported a tent had been erected by Johnston and three others in the Square. The campers ignored repeated warnings from police to remove their belongings. At about 9 a.m., 13 officers arrested one woman and three men for contravening the City of Victoria's bylaw that states overnight campers can only erect shelters between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. Sgt. Grant Hamilton of Victoria Police Department said no one resisted arrest. Johnston was arrested for breaching a court order that states he must obey the direction of any police officer enforcing any city bylaw. That court order stems from Johnston's Oct. 17 arrest, along with five others, for camping at Beacon Hill Park. Johnston had been repeatedly for camping on public property, notably on the grounds at St. Ann's Academy where security officers were often left cleaning up a mess. Johnston has renewed his overnight camping campaign after a B.C. Supreme Court decision ruled that it is unconstitutional to prohibit the homeless from protecting themselves from the elements by erecting an overhead shelter as long as there are an insufficient number of shelter beds available to them. Johnston has likened shelter beds to "internment camps" and says he wouldn't sleep in them even if they were available. The woman and two men arrested with Johnston were to be released on a promise to appear. Bylaw tickets will be issued to the individuals. Police are preparing a recommendation for charges to be forwarded to Crown counsel. Johnston is still in custody. How much does it cost having DAJ continuously put this issue to the courts (for 3+ years now)? Anything that keeps him away from our homeless problem is worth the money. If it wasn't for the utter waste of 1 million+ dollars of taxpayers money on his charter challenge, there would be more shelter beds and support programs. So, consequently, the people preeching human rights and for a solution to the problem(of course they offer no insight to this) are preeching to someone that cares about the homeless problem about as much as we care for him... which is NONE. | Bounce User Info... | The Urine test THIS GUY MAKES A GOOD POINT This was written by a construction worker in Fort MacMurray- he sure makes a lot of sense. I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In order to earn that pay cheque, I work on a rig site for a Fort Mac construction project. I am required to pass a random urine test, with which I have no problem. What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don't have to pass a urine test. Shouldn't one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare cheque because I have to pass one to earn it for them? Please understand that I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do on the other hand have a problem with helping someone sit on their ass drinking beer and smoking dope. | Zedius User Info... | And what do you do if they don't pass the urine test? If you stop giving them welfare, they will be on the street with even less possibility of getting clean. Drug addiction is more complicated than quitting cold turkey so you can receive your welfare check. There needs to be a successful rehabilitation program for them. The taxpayers never told them to pick up the stem/pipe/needle. And it's not the taxpayers responsibility to fix their mistakes. In fact it would save BBJone's precious tax money if these people just died quicker so maybe the piss test is a good idea. Not to mention most drug addicts on the streets can't even get social assistance, you need a place to live for them to cut you a cheque. plus, someone being in jail saves money rather than just letting them sleep outside in a tent? that is fucking stupid. and ok, what were the costs of 13 cops arresting three people who didn't even resist? What do beat cops make an hour? $30/hour? Guess how much it costs to house an inmate per day? I'm sure you can afford a calculator so work it out. Its not like hard drug addicts could just cold-turkey overnight if in fact something as stupid as urine samples were required for social assisstance, not just for physical reasons but by the time someone is a junkie there is probably a history of mental problems, abuse, and other contributing factors that landed them in that place. Y Yes, its a choice, but for someone to make that choice it is rather dense to ignore our collective responsibility, social climate, class barriers, among other things, as a reason that this sickness exists in our oh-so-beautiful city. I have NO association with those drugs and nor do I feel I should be or feel responsible for anyone who makes that choice. Am I callous? Maybe, but Im not taking on responsibility for someone who CLEARLY dis-regards OUR SOCIETIES view on "drugs". You cant come out and say "they didn't know the effects of the drug" or "its not their fault"... that is complete and utter bullshit and enabling others to feel that making a choice like that holds no repurcussion. YOU SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS AND CHOICES. If someone kills someone; they are accountable for their actions. | Zedius User Info... | If someone kills someone they're punished to some extent by the judicial system. Part of that is rehabilitation, even in the case of murder. It's open for discussion and constant re-evaluation how much of the focus should be on rehabilitation and how much on punishment. People like Jl who don't give a fuck about anyone but themselves are the minority, and for that I'm glad. | Jl User Info... | jesus hippy loving christ... its not that I dont want them(drug addicts) to rehab themselves... its that I hold no pity or sympathy for them. It's their problem and if they want to fix it... then by all means, seek help. But when you go as far as saying its our responsibility to hold an addicts hand while he/she goes through treatment because "its not their fault" is complete fucking bullshit. as I've said from the beginning; Im not responsible nor do I feel any responsibility for another person's addiction(barring me having/trying to stick a needle in someone's arm or force them to do drugs; which i would never do!). And as for you're opinion, cannon, you're so wrapped up in "the collectivness of mankind"; why not go out and accept a drug addict into your home and let them claim a welfare check? | Jl User Info... | Family and friends... im not talking about family and friends. Im talking about the crack head who's prayin to the pavement for another fix... THAT'S what I have no pity or remorse for. I would do just about anything for a friend or family.. but accept responsibility for their actions. I understand its a hard thing to do, quit doing drugs, but I guess I've been jaded in my opinion as the ONLY addicts I see are the one's on the street that do nothing but beg for change, and when you dont have any to "spare" you're then lambasted for being selfish...
