Anonymous Who's good to deal with? Who's good to stay away from? - Tue, 27 May 2003 7:43pm
Anonymous depends on what your shopping for, as a drummer I deal with Rob or Lynden or Graham just cuz I know him. - Tue, 27 May 2003 8:22pm
Anonymous they don't work on commision, so they're not going to hound you like futureshop.

always walk in and ask for the manager strait away. its your best bet. - Tue, 27 May 2003 8:43pm
Anonymous I have had my best dealings with Lynden in drums. There is another guy in there who is just a dork. Seems to beat around the bush, doesn't answer questions well, and good luck ordering a specialty order with him - Tue, 27 May 2003 8:49pm
Anonymous A dork? Are we in grade five? - Tue, 27 May 2003 8:56pm
Anonymous They don't work on commission? Really? - Tue, 27 May 2003 9:43pm
Anonymous i don't want to hack anyone...but ive given my number to linden (at his request) to call me to let me know when certain stuff came in...a few times....yet ive never been called...i never get the feeling that they truly care about the customers..unless your a major regular...at the same time everyone in the drum dept. is always eager to answer questions or give advice...so i really shouln't complain.....hmm - Tue, 27 May 2003 10:37pm
Anonymous The only person at L&M I CAN NEGOTIATE WITH is ???,Whane I believe...He sold me my 1st and 2nd Guitar when they used to be out in Langford about 20 years ago.If I deal with anyone from that store it would be ONLY HIM because of some bad Expieriences from others. IF you can afford to buy gear without financing DO it and GRindem . Deal with the older Managers. - Tue, 27 May 2003 10:42pm

Sean, Wayne, Colin, Ron...all these folk have been very supportive and helpful for me throughout the years. Personal service with a minimal amount of 'tude, I always try to give them my $$ first. The young 'uns (rookies if you will) are a different breed and will only quote you the list prices for anything you are interested in. I don't pay list...and occasionally, my money goes elsewhere. The old-timers are very fair in their dealings with me and I never feel grifted (or whatever.) You check out some of those large American chains with their creepy "Future Shop" ethics, then you'll get how much of a better situation we have here in Vic. Reasonable terms and a decent selection. My only real complaint would have to be their stubborn refusal to acknowledge the new "global" economy i.e.; the internet. They won't match any price from the web and in doing so, have unfortunetly lost my sale more than a few times. Comparitively though, the prices are really pretty good. - Wed, 28 May 2003 5:46am

Also, don't forget about Tempo Trend. Martin is all about making sales, but chat him up and you'll get a good deal.

They always have good used gear, PA, guitars, drums etc.

Just stay away from him dad, he's not too swift with cutomer service unless you're 90 years old too. - Wed, 28 May 2003 10:42am

ML7Mike L and M oldtimers that I know and deal with , Wayne, Ron, Graeme ( and his cousin Mike Dick does my tattoos )In fact Graeme used to do indy band TV over at Shaw, so he interviewed ML7 back in about 98. Yunguns that are cool to deal with that I actually kinda know are Colin, Brandon and and.. the nice girl who's name I always forget, and Ryan. Yes, Ive tried to pull the old net price on L and M, but they know, 9/10 people standing there holding the product, will spend the extra $20 and buy it there.. after all, if they dont like it they can return it the next day.. - Wed, 28 May 2003 12:05pm

Martin...umm..he's nice enough and all but comes across as a bit of a shister for me? Always polite, helpful but has promised me the moon one time to many, often not delivering on his promises. Dem's the brakes when you're that small a biz of course; hard to get the distributors attention.
Colin is very cool...Jocelyn is as well. She plays bass with the "formally known as" Special Guests.
For me, internet commerce is a viable alternative to any local outlet. I want to spend my cash HERE, invest locally and all but when their prices are so much more inflated than any of the "other" sources I have, north or south, I really have to wonder why. I mean...the list prices are IDENTICAL, no foolin'? - Wed, 28 May 2003 3:50pm

the reason we cant compete with some internet prices out of the states is that they deal with different distributors, so we have to buy at different costs than our u.s. counterparts. we try to do what we can, but the u.s dollar will always beat out canadian peso - Wed, 28 May 2003 5:17pm
Drive The person I preferred dealing with at L&M is gone and that was Steven. He is some kind of Management Guru now. Colin knows his shit, but he has this "Look at me, I know my shit." aura about him. Brandon is a nice guy, who has a fair amount of knowledge but not to the same extent as Steven. That French dude in the electronic section is cool, but he's French. And any Frenchman who isn't a goalie is not to be trusted. The brunette girl has a smoking ass, but she is as new as the new location. I cannot deal with the dude with the rug on his skull, as I cannot help laughing at him. The Dark haired, skinny, older dude (maybe Graeme?) who used to work at the Quadra store really pissed me off by being a complete fucking idiot low-balling me on trades. So now I don't really frequent L&M all that often. Instead, I drive up to Nanaimo and go to Arbutus music. They have premier gear and the owner and staff have buckets of intelligence and no attitude. I also get a nice drive and good Mexican food out of the deal. - Wed, 28 May 2003 7:12pm

I am always happy with the deals that I have struck Quack&McDuck. I never feel like I am being "hustled." Sean, Wayne, Colin, Jocelyn...always try to give me the best price possible, or at least are willing to discuss it. Jocelyn is a bit of a hottie...and she plays bass! Ooh yeah. - Wed, 28 May 2003 8:49pm
Drive Oh yeah right...maybe he says he's German because he's embarassed about not making the cut after Bantam Rep. Or maybe he's from Hull and just doesn't want to admit it, so he says he's from Bavaria. No, I know Germans because I'm Irish. The Irish and the Germans go way back. We gave them the German Sheppard; formerly known as the Irish Sheepard. "German Mike" my ass. If I were trying to make it in Electronic music where would I say I was from. Mont Claire? I don't fucking think so. I'd say that I come from the hottest clubs in Berlin...that I spun the plastic discs on the trip floors of Munich with the Chemical Brothers and Rufus Waynewright. I'd say that I had leather-clad orgies with Claudia Schiffer and her white haired Dwarf pack whilst Hubby David Copperfield made his own nuts dissapear on PBS. I'd say all sorts of things if I were French, but I'm not and neither is L&M Mike. - Wed, 28 May 2003 9:08pm

Nicola was great, service was great with her. Linden is a great guy too but I swear, EVERY time I go in to L&M, even if its for one skin or a couple pairs of sticks it takes me at least a half hour. Sometimes there will be no one in the percussion area for 20 minutes, 30 minutes. The service was abominably slow in the old store, it's beyond belief now. What are L&M thinking??????? Having one verrrrrry slow person to serve several customers is such stupid business sense. Do the mgrs and owners know how bad the service is in their store. Even to get a gift certificate at the front desk you have to stand there with a sign before anyone recognizes you're there. Must be a problem with their new air conditioning making everyone blind or deaf. - Thu, 29 May 2003 11:09am
ML7Mike Yah.. Jocelyn was the one who's name I forgot. - Thu, 29 May 2003 12:35pm
Anonymous Uh oh...bad words! Shame, shame!

I agree that the service could be improved. I've waited 15 minutes before finding someone to pull a guitar down from the top shelf for me.

Wayne, Ron, and Mark are good in my books. Colin seems alright too, but I've never really dealt with him. (Colin...sell me something cheap and I'll write good stuff about you!) I hate Shawn/Sean's voice! Ew!

What kind of discount or deal can you get off the listed price tag? Anything? - Thu, 29 May 2003 8:04pm

if you can't find someone to serve you, start doing it yourself!! trust me, you'll have someone over asking you if they can help quick!! thats how I do it!!

and I have to agree with the mad subwoofer on the internet thing!! eg: I asked L+M to order a set of machineheads for me. first off,,they couldn't get the colour I wanted(gold) so I said what the ??ck,,,order the silver ones. I went home, jumped online, found the gold ones I wanted for 1/2 what L+M wanted and had them delivered to my front door in a week!! three months later,,not one!!! not two!!! but THREE!! months later I get a phone call from L+M ""your machine heads are here"" so of course I said ALREADY???
actually you can guess what I said.

makes me wonder?? If I(joe nobody) can get all these things for so much cheaper, why can't L+M?? do they want to?? hhhhmmmm??? - Sat, 31 May 2003 1:09am
Anonymous Where can your order online that delivers to Canada? I really wish Musician's Friend did. - Sat, 31 May 2003 1:33am
drummer guy I was looking for Roland V-drums, e-mailed some places in Vancouver, Tom Lee music, etc. and L&M had the best price and once again I found the drum guys easy to talk with.Maybe the guitar guys are bitter cuz they didn`t make it as rock stars. Also the guy with the rug reminds me of pee-wee herman with a bad hair peice - Sat, 31 May 2003 12:34pm

drummer Ive twice ordered drum stuff from L&M only to come in later after they DIDNT phone me and see it on the shelf - special order stuff. Do there mgmt care about how shitty the servics is there? - Sat, 31 May 2003 4:11pm
crow i use e-bay lots.Half my studio came from e-bay new and used.I've never had any hassels and gotten good gear for great prices. But the other half came from l&m. - Sat, 31 May 2003 6:46pm

Anonymous If they don't work on commission...how do they get paid? By the hour? How much? - Sun, 1 Jun 2003 12:14pm
Anonymous OK... for those of you complaining about speed of delivery on special orders and finding stuff cheaper on the internet, let me explain something I've learned from working in retail myself: As for special orders taking a long time, there's really nothing that the guys down at L&M can do. They don't make the stuff. If you were some famous musician it would take the same amount of time. I spent a few years selling home electronics, and it drove me nuts listening to people bitch at me about their orders. What can I do about it? Fly to the sweat shop that makes them and tell the kids to work faster? Having been there myself I can empathise with L&M for having to listen to you whine that your order is taking too long.
As for the internet thing... a little lesson in economics, internet stores don't have to pay sales staff, they don't have to pay for fancy show rooms (how many million do you supponse Long & McQuade paid for their new store?), all they have to pay for is a webmaster and a shipper. They're also paying for their goods with the good old American dollar. You do the math. If canadian stores sold their goods for what american internet companies sell them for they would go out of business and then where would you go to try out the gear that you end up buying on the internet. Sorry for the commerce lesson, but some of you really need to think before you whine.
By the way, yes I agree the sevice can suck in there sometimes, but making lewd comments about the staff isn't going to make them want to serve you faster. - Sun, 1 Jun 2003 3:30pm
Anonymous I agree, the sexual comments were really uncalled for. By the way, the staff at L and M are all musicians, they're probably reading this. - Sun, 1 Jun 2003 3:50pm

thanks for the heads up MR lesson in commerce!! by the way!! why is it you feel you can't include your name with your lesson's???

first off,,, I don't go and try the gear at L+M then buy it on the internet!! for the most part, they don't have the gear I want!!! there is a whole other world of gear out there that L+M can't be bothered to deal with. and if I can find something I'm looking for cheaper, and get it here real quick, so could L+M,, they just won't!!! why should they?? there's no where else for us to go!! till now that is!! If I can get what I want quicker and cheaper than at L+M, I'd be an idiot not to!!! its called free enterprise!! and I don't whine about orders taking too long, I get them somewhere else!!

a little lesson in economics?? maybe L+M should take advantage of this ""internet thing"" for the benefit of all involved?? - Sun, 1 Jun 2003 3:58pm
Anonymous It took those guys 6 months to order in a pedal. They got the wrong one in twice because the sales rep wasn't paying any attention. That was a couple years back though. Around that time one of their guys (with thinning grey hair, don't know his name) once argued with a customer on the phone while keeping people waiting in line, then asked for opinions on whether he was right or not.
Unprofessional, but what can you do. - Sun, 1 Jun 2003 6:11pm
commerce prof OK... I never said you couldn't, or shouln't buy off the internet. If you find something cheaper that's available faster, and you don't mind that all of your follow-up service and warranty has to be done internationally, then go for it. I agree, that's what competition is all about. I was replying to whomever was slagging L&M for not being able to get it cheaper or faster than the internet company. Half of the twits who post on this soap box complain that L&M basically has a monopoly by being the biggest game in town, but then the other half (or maybe the same half, I don't know) bitch that they haven't got every single brand out there or that they haven't become an internet company. Make up your minds are you the left-wing guys who disapprove of big companies elbowing out the smaller businesses or are you the right-wingers who want big businesses to be bigger. If L&M started doing internet business they would have to become international for starters, and then they might as well become Virgin, or Sony... mmmm Long & McQuade brand soda... yum. I'm just sick of listening to people shoving their heads up their asses bitching about stuff that really doesn't matter. If you have nothing better to do with your time than hack down local stores for not having the brand of tubes you like (or whatever else you guys are crying about) then you have bigger problems to worry about. Try getting a life, or maybe practicing (then when you're on tour as a big star you can bitch to all the guys at Guitar Center about the fact that L&M doen't have ever brand on the face of the planet.) - Sun, 1 Jun 2003 8:05pm

L&M is the easiest target in the world for you dabblers but I'll tell you, from personal experience that despite the fact that I hate the whole concept of L&M type stores the folks in Vic have finally got it right. After dealing with them since they hit town, I can safely say that I really like almost everybody who works there now (not always the case in the past). I told the higher ups years ago that it was highly unlikely that they would ever actually make any money off of me (other than the interest on my never never account) and since then they have been great; I have pretty much the entire band staff searching for cheap horns for me ($100 trumpet, $30 trombone, 1/3 price bari sax) and can cut really good deals in the studio gear dept. When I built my studio I got a quote on all the gear from L&M as well as another company and said whoever came in cheaper would get my dough; L&M lost out, but it was nothing personal and, hey guess what, the other company is now ancient history. Sometimes it's slow but then it's also REALLY busy at certain hours of certain days; you want personal attention go on a Tuesday morning, they're usually happy to chat. You have to realise that these poor folks are dealing with musicians, the flakiest people in the world, the ultimate tire kickers, none of whom actually have any money RIGHT NOW but might have some at the end of the week and where's my fancy pedal you worthless drone??? As for the internet, it's fine for you but a)I don't trust Canada Post b) I don't trust Americans online and c) I want to fondle before I purchase. - Sun, 8 Jun 2003 2:15pm
