Cover charges are killing the scene

Anon386 Lots of great shows this weekend but is anyone showing up?

The cover charge, although low, is annoying. I think local bands should open up their shows to any other performers from regularly gigging bands. It's better to at least get people out and create some atmosphere.

Support the band by buying a CD or some other merch.
Support the bar by havig a few.
Open up your guestlist ( wide ). There will always be some to pay cover.. it is cheap after all but there is no way I need to pay for the n'th trip down to see any one of my favourite local bands. - Sat, 17 May 2003 2:00pm
Anon686 Shuttup and pay you cheap cunt! - Sat, 17 May 2003 2:19pm
Anon386 But I only have this lousy 386 with 8MB. I need to save my money!

I am willing to pay the cover every time but my thoughts are directed at the impoverished rest of us. I would rather play to a full bar and get a kick back from alchohol sales.

I heard there were more people in the smoking section at the Cynics show last night than there were at Lucky for the theraputic ones. I also heard that some of Vic's best metal acts were up at Dizzy's playing to an empty room there. Perhaps they should have stayed down island instead. Nanaimo is sort of sucking right now for independets. Dizzy's is giving it a go but there just isn't a strong local scene going on there.

Maybe it's because everyone is too cool to admit to liking other bands and feels slagging them for no good reason might help with their own futile cause. Come on Nanaimo. Victoria is struggling at the moment too even though we have many serious acts working very hard and putting on great shows/videos/recordings. Too bad a lot of them are acting like faggots and sticking to their one genre and one bar. I especially get this vibe from some of the artsy experimental acts frequenting Logan's. I like some of them too. - Sat, 17 May 2003 2:27pm
euzz cover charges arnt generally about making money, they're about breaking even. just pay the 6 bucks and have a good time - Sat, 17 May 2003 2:30pm
Anonymous get a job than loser - Sat, 17 May 2003 2:32pm
Anonymous I will gladly pay 8 bucks for a local show as long as the lineup is good. No one is going to pay more than 5 bones to see some bands like tough as nails or next of kin but it would be worth it for say ML7, gallows, allfather, staaf only, king bong, etc etc. I think good bands should start charging more so than us fans get to see our favorite bands with better equipment, better sound, better recordings, better merch, and maybe their own vehicles so I don't have to drive their asses around. - Sat, 17 May 2003 2:34pm

Too bad that's not how it works eh?! Cover in this town is INCREDIBLY low comparatively. Have you ever been in a band that played in Van? Especially recently? It costs at LEAST 200 bucks just to get there and back, not including anything else. Can't make that plus a little for your effort with a huge guestlist and a 3 buck cover. We're lucky any good Van bands come here at all anymore with the amount of $ they lose playing here. - Sat, 17 May 2003 2:39pm
Mopey Bands swallow the costs of everything from gas to strings and sticks. You should be paying the cover AND buying merch. If you cant handle it, drink less beer. Its about the bands, not your hops hungry gullet. - Sat, 17 May 2003 2:42pm
Death to Rocktoria $6 for 6 bands, on June 6:

Woolly Mammoth
Hank Pine & Lily Fawn
Self Inflicted
Gashly Crumb
Children of Celebrities
Immaculate Machine

at Logan's. - Sat, 17 May 2003 2:57pm
Anon386 I was hoping a past Rocktoria band would be on the bill. What about some metal? Death to Death to Rocktoria! - Sat, 17 May 2003 3:44pm

Most of us bands arent into it for the money. We are happy just playing to an enthusiastic crowd. Cash is a bonus. If you want to help us with our finances buy us a beer when you see us play, which will make us drunker, which will make us hand out more free cds...... oh wait a minute! - Sat, 17 May 2003 3:59pm
Anonymous Hey Anon people pay cover so the promoters can pay for the hall/PA and out of town bands. So what if its like $5? get a job or go downtown and beg for it - Sat, 17 May 2003 4:18pm

It's not cover charges that are killing the scene, it's people who don't go out BECAUSE of cover charges that are killing the scene. Too many good shows happen in this town that wind up being sparsely attended due to people not wanting to shell out some cash. Anything under $10 is a steal! - Sat, 17 May 2003 6:09pm

Anon386 Oops.. missed self inflicted on the list. Getting better. I guess Immaculate Machine for a touch of mainstream. They would make a good rocktoria band.

Support them all and pay your cover. Maybe the real problem is the taxation on alcohol and our stupid liquor laws. Venues should be allowed to have minors at the very least. All ages shows are tough to put on and have horrible revenue potential. - Sun, 18 May 2003 2:52am
Anonymous What about bands playing at all ages shows? Beer sales there aren't even a possibility to ask from the bar even if someone wanted to make an arrangement like that. At least with the cover you know how much is being brought in for the band.

One way to do things is to ask the bar for a straight-up guarantee and then justify it by saying they will make it up in drink sales. Then have no cover.

Just saying having no cover often devalues the worth (cover charge wise) of the band especially if you are in a situation where that is the only source of revenue you can generate.

Making money off merchandise is risky at best. Depending on how much you purchase you could lose even more on trying to make money that way. People are touchy with buying merchandise unless a solid fan base is there for the band, event or whatever... - Sun, 18 May 2003 5:07am
Anonymous I meant the band will be devalued from shows where they didn't charge a cover if all of a sudden they try to charge one because they aren't playing at a place that can make revenues off drink sales. - Sun, 18 May 2003 5:15am
