i'm looking at renting a commercial space and need some support from other people in town who would want to get involved. i'm new to town and know a few people in the "indie" music scene, but nobody seems to have the time/money/dedication to do anything a little more ambitious... I don't even know who records in this town aside from the random tossers who must be out there buying all the cheapo "pro tools" systems from l&m.... I have pretty close to a pro studio gear-wise... i have a 2" studer 24 track plus studer 1/4" mixdown deck... looking for people who perhaps have an established studio and maybe an inadequate space or have nice mic's/outboard preamps/compressors/etc (ie something to bring to the table) but want to go tape... also looking for a few bands/people to get jamming in the studio as well on downtime to pay the bills... here's the catch: I don't like punk rock, metal, hip hop, or "modern" rock a la Italian Edition/Counting Heartbeats (for local examples)... we have to have a unified vision music wise... I like Velvet Underground/Wilco/Neutral Milk Hotel/The Band/etc... part of my goal is to start a "The Hive" of Victoria and expand overtime... rents in this town are pretty expensive for commercial leases (about $2000 a month for anything)... anybody out there that is interested? - Sat, 30 Aug 2008 4:36pm

My Brother in-law is in one of those types of "bands" & he has some $ to throw around & likely looking for something like this - I haven't a clue what his equipment is but he's made a few mixes at his "home studio" - my email is attached to my profile - I'll tell him about this & see what he says - Sat, 30 Aug 2008 6:48pm

I'm looking at getting a place in the esquimalt industrial park... 1600 sq ft for $1200 a month... anybody think it is realistic to have a palce that far out of the city? - Thu, 4 Sep 2008 11:07am

there's already a jam building in that neighbourhood with 9 rooms and maybe 15 bands or so using them, many long term renters.. its under threat of being sold and all the bands losing their spots.. so if that happened you'd have all those bands looking to rent rooms somewhere in the city.

edit: but then again at least half of them are metal bands so I guess that wouldnt work for ya..

ps: The Hive.. do some great metal recordings. - Thu, 4 Sep 2008 2:05pm Edited: Thu, 4 Sep 2008 2:07pm

likely (with the location I'm looking at) a large jamspace populated with lots of people I don't know probably isn't the best... maybe 3-4 bands jamming there (that I know pretty well) is the best, rather than a purpose-build jam facility. I don't really care about bands jamming... it is just to help pay the bills... - Thu, 4 Sep 2008 5:29pm

I come from an academic recording background and have worked as a recording technician for UVic under Kirk McNally. I'm still a student and probably fall under the "tosser" category since I've never had a lot of money to put into my own studio. Anyway, I find your musical interests pretty narrow-minded and I have very little money or time to put into something like this, but I figured I'd at least pop into the thread and say hi. - Thu, 4 Sep 2008 6:23pm

thanks for your input tyler! just so you know i'm currently looking for someone to write my biography and since you know so much about me and my musical tastes, I was wondering if you might be interested in the project... maybe you could also intern at the studio! i love giving students a hand and maybe help them out with a paycheck once in a while...

great job! - Sun, 7 Sep 2008 8:11pm Edited: Sun, 7 Sep 2008 8:14pm

Ha ha ha! I wasn't gonna say anything, but I have to agree with Tyler. You probably shouldn't be offended by what he said, because you already said it yourself.

"I don't like punk rock, metal, hip-hop..."

Edit: Sorry, to be more constructive I think it would help if you elaborated on that aspect. Those are basically 3 umbrella terms which include a hell of a lot of music. - Mon, 8 Sep 2008 12:26pm Edited: Mon, 8 Sep 2008 12:30pm

Yeah those genres cover majority of bands in Victoria as far as I have seen & heard... even if you don't like the music, I assume you'd still be open to recording them? since not every engineer likes the music they record. - Mon, 8 Sep 2008 12:42pm

I don't listen to those kinds of music (aside from some earlier punk rock/post-punk al a Wire, Television, Sonic Youth, Buzzcocks...) and would therefore be unsuited to recording them... I'm not sure if this is predominantly a punkrock/metal town, but it is at least in this little microcosm... obviously you guys live and breath the stuff and think I'm narrow minded if I don't like the same kind of music you guys do... in fact I'm able to record (and enjoy recording) a variety of genres... jazz, folk, roots, world music, small-ensemble classical, electronic (my ability for this is limited as I am tape-based...); if you are producing bands/genres that you don't enjoy, what is the point, fellas? - Mon, 8 Sep 2008 1:15pm Edited: Mon, 8 Sep 2008 1:16pm

"if you are producing bands/genres that you don't enjoy, what is the point, fellas?"

uh, money? :)

my band has an 800 sq ft space downtown. top floor of a two story building. fir floors, brick walls, open ceiling with exposed rafters. we built a control room, but we're not doing anything with it at the moment - only the beer fridge and microwave are in there now. still have a bit of work to do (primarily painting at this point). its a cool joint and we might be able to work something out. - Tue, 9 Sep 2008 8:33am

narrow minded or not isnt really the issue as i see it.. being honest is. I wouldnt want someone who didnt like rap producing my next rap album...

and even just excluding punk/metal/rap you are still left with an incredible range of genres that I would in no way define as narrowminded. in fact quite the opposite.

and concerning the actual subject of the thread. I think its a great idea, I dont think esquimalt is too far away in fact I think to distance yourself from 'downtown' would be a good thing (to a certain extent). I look forward to seeing how this progreses..

feel free to listen to my newest punk-rap double album at http://www.myspace.com/thecloudsbelow - Tue, 9 Sep 2008 9:21pm

If you want to be like "The Hive" of Victoria you should maybe get one of those "cheapo" DAW systems that you don't seem to care for and toss the old Studers; very few folks in this town can afford 2" tape nor can they wait around while you calibrate them every day. Don't tell me you were planning on editing in 2" analog as well? - Thu, 11 Sep 2008 12:59pm

why are most of you baggin' on this guy? Just because he doesn't see eye to eye with everyone here, in terms of musical taste, you jump all over him.
All he's doing is bringing another means for bands to practice and record. If he doesn't like metal and I were in a metal band, chances are I wouldn't take the chance of having someone record music they dont like. That being said, if your in it soley for money; then Id sell the shirt off my back as well as record the shittest music and tell you its the next great hit.
Like steve said above me; Id rather someone be straight up and honest before pleasing a bunch of fanboy's. - Thu, 11 Sep 2008 4:52pm

I'm not concerned at all with what the regular people at large have to say... I was looking for positive interest and possible business partners/clients... and I've had some good leads, so aside from what the wildlife says/cares, this post is a success... - Thu, 11 Sep 2008 5:38pm

Quinn, my read on it (having played int he kinds of bands you seem to be into) is that there's a lot of interest in that kind of music bubbling under the surface, but hasn't really come together because, partly, there's the perception that 1: nobody's into that kind of music in Victoria, and 2: there's nowhere to jam.

If you get this going, I'm interested, but not enough to sign onto a waiting list (yet). - Mon, 15 Sep 2008 10:45pm

well... there ain't going to be a waiting-list... this is going to be a private-type place in terms of jamming... not a commercial jamspace... - Tue, 16 Sep 2008 8:50am

In that case, I can instantly think of at least half a dozen highly talented musicians that would be into that, and a many many many more than might be if you catch them in the right mood. - Tue, 16 Sep 2008 4:54pm
