No, not as if I think people CARE about me leaving next year, but more so WHY.
Judging by this picture... it's a gem.
Over the last couple years, a dozen or so people I know have left because Victoria's junkie/hobo/tent city crusaders crisis.
Who else has had this problem?
I have a year of UNI ahead of me then I am OUT. - Wed, 27 Aug 2008 10:49am

I wouldn't even know there is a "tent city crusaders crisis" if it wasn't for Dajit coming on here bragging aboot it. The junkies have caused some problems for me, but I just say a big FUCK YOU! to them.

This is a GORGEOUS city. One of the best in the world. - Wed, 27 Aug 2008 11:25am Edited: Wed, 27 Aug 2008 11:34am

Not sure yet. I want to ace my first year of school so that I have open options to other schools. From there I can choose. The smaller the better. The only big city I would go to is Montreal.
I hear that UBC Kelowna is nice.

The other things about Vic that rub me the wrong way are:
1. Age difference. We seem to be a liberal province with a very conservative electorate.
2. Bear Mountain. Despite the huge outcry for stopping that years ago, it still went ahead. The road to bear mountain was the same.
3. Transit. Weak. Need I say more?

I do like Vic, but maybe it's shelf life is here.... - Wed, 27 Aug 2008 12:24pm

Been there, done that. More junkies, more street people, more poverty, more late night drunks, more muggings, more break-ins.

"Transit. Weak. Need I say more?"

This is just silly. Compared to what? I haven't seen or heard of better transit anywhere ever (especially not Kelowna). Why do people here complain about transit? What are the problems?? - Wed, 27 Aug 2008 3:41pm

I'm moving to Berlin! Eventually... I just feel there's nothing here for me in Victoria, and that if I stay, I will just be held back in life. I stayed in Germany for a month and have lived in/been to other parts of Europe, and just feel very "at home" there. Victoria is just not cutting it, and I've been here my whole 20yrs of life. - Wed, 27 Aug 2008 4:34pm

I kinda felt the same when I was younger, ventured to Europe for about 2 years, and when I came back, it sure changed my perspective on Victoria. Made me appreciate it way more, can't imagine moving away from here now.

People over there wondered why the hell I was there and why I wasnt living in beautiful Victoria...

" I haven't seen or heard of better transit anywhere ever (especially not Kelowna). "

have you ever been off the island? The transit system in London, england is great; Hong Kong is fast; Japan is excellent. When it comes to victoria; you're always left guessing if the bus will be on time, and if you miss it; the wait times are attrocious on some routes. Every other major city has constant transit options available. And they run well into the early morning; which they stop here at midnight(last bus to Uvic). Transit here is poor compared to other cities around the world. Go travelling without a car and you'll realise how simplistic our transit system really is.

"yeah, but the junkies are the ones breaking into houses and taking shit that matters to people i.e- guitars, bikes, heirloom jewelery, etc."

you're not going to escape that anywhere; unless you move to the sticks. Shit happens where ever you go; just take in stride and remember that this place, victoria, is still just as beautiful and friendly as the day you moved here. No matter what anyone else says. I've lived here for 27 years; and been privy to alot of travelling. This is, in my opinion, the best place in the world to call home. - Wed, 27 Aug 2008 5:26pm

Victoria would be a lot nicer if it were entirely populated by Calgarians. This would weed out the following groups of people:

CAMOSUN STUDENT:
Yeah, sure, you're going to Camosun because it's cheaper than UVIC. In fact, you've got a framed acceptance letter from UVIC at home, right?
Are you fucking serious? You're going to Camosun because your Dad threatened to take away the keys to your Cavalier/Sunfire if you didn't either get a job at a grocery store or go to school.

SUBURB-DWELLING PSEUDOINTELLECTUAL BAY CENTER KID:
May also be a Camosun student, but prefers mommy's basement in Fernwood or Oak Bay. Almost guaranteed to be dressed up like the guy in the basement of the pawn shoppe in Pulp Fiction. Doesn't understand irony.
(By the way, if this is you, please read: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/irony)

YOU, WITH THE SKINNY JEANS AND JERRYCURLS:
More effeminate than the fat chicks constantly clamoring to get a piece of him, this androgynous wimp has a weak understanding of irony that stops just short of understanding himself. Will profess bisexuality until he gets one of his heffers pregnant and drops out, and then washes his hair and tell his junkie kids about how wild he was in his college days (if the kid survives his parents' ecstacy binges.)

GIRL WHOSE PARENTS SENT THEM TO ASIA OR SOUTH AMERICA OR SOME FUCKING PLACE AS A PRESENT FOR GRADUATING AND CAN'T FOR THE LIFE OF HER SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT IT:
Travelling in packs of two to five, these insufferable cunts will be seen wearing cute ironic wool caps drinking tea out of a paper cup without a lid. Takes care to balance out bad karma (OMG I KNOW STARBUCKS IS SOOO BAD BUT IT'S SOOO GOOD) with good karma (I THINK WILL & GRACE IS SOOO FUNNY GUYS.)

DICKHEAD WHO THINKS VICTORIA IS SUCH A GREAT EXCEPT FOR DOWNTOWN WHICH IS SOMEBODY ELSE'S PROBLEM ANYWAY:
Much like the flat earth society, members of this group refuse to acknowledge a fundamental truth: Downtown Victoria is geographically situated INSIDE VICTORIA'S CITY LIMITS! The group itself is evenly divided between those who think the homeless and addicts should be dealt with more harshly but refuse to take any personal responsibility as citizens and those who believe the homeless and addicts should be treated with kid gloves on somebody's else's dime.

Victoria would be fucking great if it weren't for all the Victorians. - Wed, 27 Aug 2008 5:53pm Edited: Wed, 27 Aug 2008 5:55pm

you want escape? go live on a boat. after a while, you'll get bored and miss the colour of the city, including it's down and outs.

when we got robbed i spent the next two weeks thinking about selling my house here, buying a house in cumberland and getting a new job. then i calmed down and began to re-realize why we like it here. once the kids grow up i'm sure we'll spend time here, there and everywhere. until then, this is good.

the thing is, there are many people living in conditions and locations that to many of us would seem uninhabitable and yet they are totally happy. something i am beginning to realize more as i get older is that there is no place that will bring you peace. there is only peace within yourself. - Wed, 27 Aug 2008 10:50pm

as for the "camosun student"- I attended that college for 2 years; and would've loved to go to uvic, but I couldn't afford to pay MY tuition. But nice try on the stereotype; while in attendance, I did notice the breed. But in all honesty; camosun students are alot more laid back than most uvic students i've known/come to know. As for the Camosun thing, who are you to judge anyway? I'm a UVic grad and I went to Camosun first. Camosun is much cheaper, has smaller classrooms, and is easier to get into (from which you can often transfer to UVic). I preferred Camosun to UVic. - Thu, 28 Aug 2008 6:00pm

Are you sure you were downtown and not ballgagging it in a basement in Bowness? I can see average Joe Victoria making that mistake.

Just because the people you met didn't smile and shake your hand and offer to suck your dick for a filet-o-fish doesn't mean they're unfriendly - it just means they're employed.

That article was written by a confirmed Edmontonian.

"Tom McMillan examines Victoria through the eyes of a curious, 25-year-old newcomer. Born in Alberta and schooled in Ontario, Tom is one of the Times Colonist's 2008 summer interns. He's also written for the Regina Leader-Post and Edmonton Journal, and was once described as a "dumber, less-funny version of Rick Mercer.""

Move to a real city?

man, you live here; why complain? If its so bad, then go home. Its no wonder that alot of people find the prairie lovers to be a bit abrasive, tactless, and brash. But to read your constant barrage of B.S.-laden posts about how shitty it is here; then move, and stop being a little whiney bitch about it. Besides, I was here well before you; why should I move if I have no complaints? I love it here and will continue to love it here no matter how small of an IQ you may present in your arguements about how crappy it is here. Stop your bitching and deal with it; or if you have such "huge, fat Albertan nuts" then grow a sack and move. Its simple; I dont know why you cant comprehend it, but then again people from the prairies are a bit slower than those elsewhere.
Good luck in the rest of your life; hopfully you'll find a place where people will accpet you for who you are and not what you say. - Fri, 29 Aug 2008 5:16pm

I was an airforce brat and lived many places in Canada;
Moved here 20 years ago and wouldn't leave if you paid me big dollars. I don't live downtown anymore but I do work every day in centennial square, so I see the depravity of the meth/junkie scene. Hey, Junkies are people too.

When I can afford to finally retire and eventually die (in sooke) I will be a happy man. The wife has been instructed to mulch me up and help the bamboo grove grow up real nice-like. (Bamboo loves dead shit!)

If I really HAD to go back to a big city, I'd go back to Toronto. For some reason I always felt safe there... But, after having lived in Victoria, ALL large cities are just too fast for my liking.

I was born in Toronto, lived in Calgary for ten years, moved here to go to UVic. This is definitely the top of the heap; beats the hell out of Calgary anyways.

I think the transit system is great: the buses are well-maintained, cheap, and there's a shitload of them. I know they stop at midnight, but you can walk pretty much anywhere within an hour, and you don't have to worry about freezing to death (or paying $75 for a cab).I know downtown can be sketchy, but no more so than any other city I've been to; Calgary is equally bad if not worse... Less junkies, but more wandering dipshits looking for a random fight.

I might try the East Coast sometime, but for now I'm happily staying put. Been here seven years so far. - Sat, 30 Aug 2008 1:39pm Edited: Sat, 30 Aug 2008 1:45pm
