I felt embarrassed for them.. it's like they had 20 mediocre ideas for a song and just mashed them all together. Kinda sounds like they wrote it so it'd be a good guitar hero song... - Fri, 22 Aug 2008 12:20pm

The stuff I heard sounded just as boring and stupid as anything else I've heard from them post black. I have to admit St. Anger was a teensy bit more embarrassing, but being better still leaves an light years of room for suck.

Woo, how tough of you!

Checked out "The day that never comes". The first half - very bland...Lars has just become such a stiff and boring drummer. Can't even set up the hihat right. James' vocals are just terrible and will never be the same again. And just too much of a shitty ballad.

Second half - pretty decent! Looks like they've rediscovered the fact that a guitar does have more than 5 frets. Definitely got a Justice/Puppets vibe from it. Sounds like they put a bit of work in this song, cool.

The other clips - some cool ideas, some very blah parts. I sure hope these are not the highlights of the album...either way, they're too short to get a good impression so I'll wait till Soulseek has the full album.

At any rate, should they come to the Sofa, I will definitely attend. - Sat, 23 Aug 2008 10:46am Edited: Sat, 23 Aug 2008 10:48am

That new song they just put out as a single sounds like Nickelback in the first half and then goes into a half-assed rehash of the second part of "One" that sounds like they tagged it on merely to appease everybody looking for a part that "sounds like their old stuff".

Despite that this new album is going to be a colossal joke I would still definitely be in attendance if they came here. - Sat, 23 Aug 2008 12:18pm

I loved it, didn't think any of the riffs were mediocre in the least. Hammet's descending wanks in the last half were a bit annoying, other than that it was a great tune. - Sun, 24 Aug 2008 4:42pm

Thanks, Rev.

That's the first one I've heard.

Hate it. It would have been just a "I don't like it" but anything new Lars does gets an extra level of hate becuase... well he's Lars. He killed Metallica for me so for that, he gets my hate.

Back to the song... what I didn't like:
- Vocals burried
- Bad mix of styles
- Musically it seems "lost"
- Git solo is unfittingly retro.
- Song should have ended at 3:30 (instead I got another 1:30 of the same old crappy riffs)
- Boring, lame and so desparately trying to be good, but falling short.

Thinks I liked:
- I got a phone call near the end so stopped paying attention to it and all of a sudden it was over. - Tue, 26 Aug 2008 1:58pm

Bunch of tracks just released on Metallica.com

I am really looking forward to hearing the rest of the album. Other than the vocals this album almost sound like load, reload, and anger never happened. Some of the best thrash I've heard in a while that has some origionality. - Fri, 5 Sep 2008 8:31am

Its definitely much better than load, reload, and st.anger. That being said; its certainly not gunna top the charts as a dramatic improvment over what they've been doing.
I do agree what someone had said about lars' drumming. And also with James vocals; i thought they were really lack luster and it sounded, to me, like this album was put together by lars and he had the rest of the band play with him. It just doesn't seem like a group effort; so much as it seemed like a dentist trying to pull a child's tooth without novacaine.
Having said all of that; im buying my tix next weekend to check them out in vancouver.. maybe i'll change my mind after that! I hope so. - Sat, 6 Sep 2008 2:09pm

I agree with RobW. I don't think I've ever heard a more "Guitar Hero" friendly album. It's practically tailor made for it.

I guess they more points from stuff like that than off their album sales. - Sat, 13 Sep 2008 12:51pm

Well, I've been listening to a re-edited version of Death Magnetic that cuts out most of the filler of this album all day. It really makes this album more what it should have been and puts into perspective where they went wrong on this one. Hopefully they have a listen to this version and hire the guy who did it as a consultant for the next album. He basically did what Rick Rubin was supposed to do.
Like I keep saying, Death Magnetic is a step in the right direction, but it's still bloated.
The article and info where to find this version are in the following nicked from Blabbermouth:

METALLICA's European record label Universal Music cancelled the band's interview with the Swedish newspaper Sydsvenskan last week after one of the paper's writers admitted in his review of METALLICA's new album that he illegally downloaded an alternate version of the CD via the Internet.

In his three-star review (out of a possible five-star rating) of METALLICA's long-awaited new effort, "Death Magnetic", Jonn Jeppsson mentioned an edited version of the CD that he obtained through the Swedish web site The Pirate Bay, which bills itself as "the world's largest BitTorrent tracker." According to Jeppsson, "Death Magnetic: Better, Shorter, Cut" contains the same 10 cuts that are found on the regular version of "Death Magnetic" but with "one to four minutes of each song trimmed off." He wrote, "Once the songs are saved from their fatsuits — compare this to people who can lose half their body weight and you can sense how many times too often the choruses are repeated on the original tracks — they're not just glaringly precise and intense, they really live up to expectations."

Speaking to Dagens Media about the review and Universal's decision to cancel Sydsvenskan's scheduled interview with METALLICA, Universal Music Sweden president Per Sundin stated, "The reviewer is referring to a BitTorrent where someone has altered the original songs. The reviewer explains exactly where one should go in order to download the file that totally infringes on a copyright. It's not only an illegal file, but an altered file. The reviewer also writes that this is how the album should have sounded."

He continued, "File-sharing of music is illegal. Period. There's nothing to discuss. That fact that Sydsvenskan has a writer that has downloaded this music illegally and then makes mention of an illegal site in his review is totally unacceptable to us.”

Sundin added that Universal Music has not yet determined what impact this incident will have on the label's relationship with Sydsvenskan.

"We live in symbiosis with each other and we send them our artists' record for free for review," he explained. "But if they download the records illegally instead, then there's no point in doing that."

Meanwhile, the "enterprising young audio engineer" who claimed responsibility for the edited version of "Death Magnetic" e-mailed the MetalSucks web site on Thursday, September 11 and explained that "basically, I just wanted a new album by METALLICA that I could listen to without getting irritated by some lame lyrics or ploddy riffs that go nowhere for three minutes before turning into something cool. The original version of 'Death Magnetic' is the best thing that they've done since '…And Justice For All', but it ain't great. My version is great." - Sun, 14 Sep 2008 3:46pm

Boot In Flames off that bill, give Gojira the top slot and add Zimmer's Hole or another cool Vancouver band and I'd make the journey over. Gojira for 25 minutes would just be a tease. - Fri, 19 Sep 2008 4:37pm

I just might grab the re-edited dealie; the descriptions sound like the best way to listen to this record. Those original song links on livevic made me cringe, but I wouldn't mind hearing something from them to get my head moving at least a little bit.

grimlord nailed it well, but let me expand: Exhausted drumming technique or no, Lars is the Grand-Douche-Bag of the Universe bar none!

What gets my goat more is how attached the mainstream media is to the notion (read: Metallica-fed) that this is the best thing since Ride the Lightning or Master 'o Puppets .... I've never been a huge fan, but that's simply not possible and I don't want to hear that shitty comparison again.
.
I guess I must reveal that Shortest Straw from Justice is my fav, and that in fact includes some of the drum-bullshit that grimlord is tired of.
.
You know what? This post is about as much effort as I can muster for this band anyway.

I've always been a die hard Kill Em All fan though some of there other stuff is decent too. If you watch any of the older concerts from the late 80s early 90s you'll see that James Hetfield use to have a decent voice. He's never been an amazing singer but over the past 10 years+ it seems he's switched to Country. That's my biggest problem with the new album or any of the newer material.

The other issue I have with the new album is it has some good parts but that in itself is the issue. Good parts doesn't make a good song. The song structure is all over the place and not in a good way. The songs aren't balanced. You have a song that has a huge long intro, a bit of singing and then ends in a long solo. There are plenty of bands with weird song structure but when all the parts are amazing or have some consistency it only makes it more interesting. I think they were trying a little too hard. It's a step in the right direction but it's hard to take them seriously when it's only a step. I would have been all for a leap. - Thu, 16 Oct 2008 1:46pm

While a agree with alot of what you all are saying, I'm willing to cut them some slack. Let's not forget, they've been doing this for almost 25 years now, and there are only so many notes. It's gotta get hard to come up with new and interesting material after that long. That having been said, I was disappointed with the album, but I did like the return to the long instrumental sections, it reminds me of the Puppets and Justice days.

P.S. I agree that Hetfieild's voice isn't what it used to be and that it detracts from the over all quality of the tunes. - Mon, 20 Oct 2008 12:09am
