So the changing of the guard has begun.. Naslund and Morrison are gone.

Demitra, Bernier, Hordichuk, Ryan Johnson, Wellwood, (Baumgartner..?) come on board and gobble up $10 million of the $20 mill in the bank. $10 million left under the cap.. not enough for Sundin, unless they give him a signing bonus and pay out the rest (ie: 5mill + 5mill) or move some pylons for future picks (Pyatt, Cowan, Pettinger etc)

The line possibilites are many.. no shortage of centermen this year. one line is for certain.

It's about time.

Now hopefully the coach can get his act together and make the Canucks worth watching this year. They have been putting on some of the most boring hockey since the New Jersey days pre-strike.

I sincerely hope that changes (moreso than seeing more W's even).

Thank god NFL starts soon... - Thu, 10 Jul 2008 12:18pm

Now that we have Demitra, Sundin is practically a slam dunk.
With our defense, the twins, Bernier, Demitra, Sundin(?), Raymond, the shutdown and scoring power of Kesler/Burrows/Pettinger, the shutdown/knuckles of Hordichuk/Johnson/Davison, and of course a happy Luongo, the Canucks are gonna be an ELITE team 08/09.

its so funny, i hear so many people lamenting all the change for the 'nucks... but Im actually keen on seeing the changes and if they work; great... if not, well that what rebuilding is all about!

on another note; I'm quite a fan of a program called "footbal factories"... highlighting all the hooligan firms around the world for soccer clubs. There was one imperticular from scotland. They call themselves "the casuals", by which they wear no identifying clothing to the team they support... but once in the stadium; you know who they're supporting. My suggestion is a hooligan firm called "the canuck casuals"... how bout it? lol... of course im joking as i type this, but i couldn't resist after watching that episode. - Wed, 16 Jul 2008 5:22pm

“If I can’t punch beat them up on the ice, I’ll choke a hold on the ice,” joked Hordichuk about his new skills.

This man is not a hockey player, and I'd be just as disgusted if he was "playing" for Senators or the Flames. It's piss poor sportsmanship on the part of the team to let him run his mouth like that. - Wed, 16 Jul 2008 9:00pm Edited: Wed, 16 Jul 2008 9:03pm

I was kind of miffed that they named bobby lou' as captain; but wont rep the captaincy on ice. But seeing them play as a unit is much better than having some idiot running around with a "C" that doesn't care(cough NASLUND cough).
If I were to pick someone else from Luongo Id side with the longest running member of the current roster(even if he cant speak english well)... Matias Ohlund. He's stuck around year after year for the past, almost 10 plus years. He knows, much like Linden, what its like to go through tough times with a team and to feel what its like on a winning team(despite playoff results). - Thu, 2 Oct 2008 5:17pm

I think Ohlund's Engrish is fine. Demitra is a looking to be a good leader. This team is full of potential Captains. I think that will prove more important than having one overpaid superstar. This years Canucks remind alot of the Oilers team that went to the finals two years ago. Except with better goalie. They had at least five Captains with Roloson, Peca, Pronger, Smith, and Smyth.
We have Luongo, Demitra, Mitchel, Ohlund(who is actually worth 5.5-6.5million), Kesler, even Bieksa, Daniel, and Johnson are potential Captains.

It all bodes well for a mature, skilled well lead team.

6-0. Still undefeated! - Fri, 3 Oct 2008 10:49pm

Take it easy on them big dude.
Tonight they ended up playing a shortened bench with injuries to Salo, Hordichucknorris, and Demitra. This road trip all over four time zones, back to back games is a very tough way to start a season.

so I was thinking out on a limb(please take note of the latter "limb" part); what would happen if Luongo still injured but not on IR and Sanford got injured in a game... but bobby lou wasn't able to play. Who would take the net then? And has this scenario ever been played out? where the team, IN GAME, has exhausted their goalie reserves and had to put a defenceman or forward 'in' to fill the hole; so to speak. I was discussing it with a buddy of mine and came to the conclusion that it(the scenario) hasn't happend in NHL history(even before the league amalgamations to increase the NHL size.... so pre 80's as well; though im thinking of the OLD days of hockey too, a la' gordie howe, dryden, etc... era). - Thu, 27 Nov 2008 4:44pm

It happened a few years ago, sort of, in Vancouver where a UBC goalie had to sit on the bench.. he never got any game time.

John Garret talked about it a few days ago too.. he was once asked at a game to sign a short term ( 1 day ) contract but as he was on his way from the commentator booth to the dressing room, and alternative option came up. Garret being a retired NHL goalie and now colour commentator for sportsnet.

In a pinch the team has to either dress a defenceman as a goalie or pick someone out of the crowd and sign them short term. - Sun, 30 Nov 2008 12:09pm Edited: Sun, 30 Nov 2008 12:12pm

I never said he was a bad player... I said he was a bad leader
He might have all the personal stats he likes. But when it gets down to the shit, Toronto was better off without him(and is). Look at the playoffs in '02(i think if im correct) when Sundin was basically out the whole run... Roberts, McCabe(as much as I hate to like him), Corson, Tucker; they led the team to 3rd round(again i believe; off the top of my head) and when Sundin made his "miraculous" comeback, the team shit the bed.
Again, I dont deny him to be a great goal scorer; but like Kovalchuck, one player does not make a team... and especially if that player cant lead a team. - Thu, 18 Dec 2008 7:30pm

HIGHLY doubt they will strip Luongo of the C.

If anything, Luongo will hand it over on his own, but I wouldnt bet on it. Luongo has done a stellar job, which is evident as the team continues to win without him in net.

Sundin also made it clear that one of his main reasons for choosing Vancouver over NYC is because it was a seemless entry that required no player movement or trades. Marching in and taking the C is NOT seemless no matter how much the players agree or disagree with it, the media will blow it so far out of proportion as they always do, and it will be controversy.

Now, I wonder if all the speech impediment Dick and Jane graduates will finally get the names of the 'Sedins' right now that its going to be spelled out for them every game. (referring to all the people that call the 'Sedins' the 'Sundins' no matter how many times they are corrected.. ) - Fri, 19 Dec 2008 10:20am

Cody Hodgson has another solid night as Canada beats the Finns 7-3
Sunday, 12.21.2008 / 10:33 PM / News
Canadian Press

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - John Tavares isn't the only offensive threat Canada will have at the world junior championship.

Cody Hodgson had a goal and two assists for the second straight game Sunday as Canada beat Finland 7-3 in an exhibition tuneup for the tournament.

The 18-year-old forward was one of the last players cut by the Vancouver Canucks earlier this year and has been a standout for Brampton in the Ontario Hockey League. Coach Pat Quinn has had Hodgson playing on a different line than Tavares at even strength, which should help balance the team's offensive attack. - Mon, 22 Dec 2008 12:08am

Due to this retarded reality, I am going to consider every goal scored and every goal against prevented as the work of Mats Sundin just to make it seem reasonable.
Therefore...Sundin got a hat-trick last night! Money well spent!

OH Vancouver fans......I think the Flames are the least of your worries right now. Catching them will not only take a total meltdown by the Flames combined with the Cannots winning alot of their remaining games. Very, very unlikely. I would however hazard a guess that the Oilers, Coyotes, Ducks, Aves and a few others pose the most serious risk to your team's playoff hopes. PS Andy....a quick note to point out that Kipper leads the league in wins right now but yes you are correct he as well as the whole team have struggled heavily in the playoffs. (Aside from 2 years ago against the Red Wings when we didnt even show up), we usually meet the 1st or 2nd seed and give them a good fight like last year when we should have beaten the Sharks in that first series but lost in 7. Well, first thing is the colossal waste of cap space goes into retirement where he belongs.
Second, Vigneault is sent packing. He had a shot. Not beating the Cawks in round two is grounds for dismissal in my book. Never liked him any way. Even during the win streak, I felt he was a fraud.
Third, fire the passing coach. Beg Detroit's passing coach to come here. Forget golfing and spend the summer practicing.

Nucks were outskated, out-sticked and scored and were lucky they got as far as they did. They played like there were at practice and were simply out-skated, out-goaled and their lame penalties were half-hearted attempts at looking tough. I hope that they jettison Sundin and his useless contract and use that money to keep the twins around. That and a consistently healthy Demimtra should put us in good standing for next year. I do think that it would be nice though to have a backup goalie that was a little more...consistent? compitent? I think Marty Gerber might be on the market this summer after Toskola's knee is repaired.

Sundin is UFA, so there is no contract to jettison. I hope he comes back at a reduced rate.
Demitra is going in for shoulder surgery, needs four months to recover.
As far as back up goalie, I can't see why you wouldn't like what Labarbera did for us. - Thu, 14 May 2009 4:02pm

Toronto fans have past glories to keep them pacified as their team sucks warty balls year after year.
Us Cancks just have seasons that end with disappointment year after year (with the exception of a few years where things looked good and even came close).
The frustration of watching your team do well and then draw back in the second round against a team you know they could have beat if they stuck with the original game plan makes Canck fans act out. That is what happens when fans want the best for their team, but the team doesn't seem to give a flying fuck when it counts most.
Again we say...there's always next season. - Thu, 14 May 2009 4:10pm

Trev, I liked what Labarbera did for us, but I don't have confidence that he could step in long term if, God forbid, Luongo went down with a serious or even season ending injury. Besides, who wouldn't pick Gerber over Labarbera as a backup option?

HODGSON! OHL player of the year.. nearly as many points as the wunderkid Tavares. Last I looked was killing Tavares in playoff points. and he is all ours.

Sundin - 7 points in 6 games vs. Chicago.. didnt that lead the team? And that on an inujured knee. Why would anyone want to jettison him? He played solid, didnt take too many penalties and played fairly defensively and got the points. Fair enough they werent goals. But if we could get Sundin healthy for less than 2.5 mill Id say go for it.

Luongo. Seems to crack in the playoffs. twice now. On the ropes about that one.. sign ,long term or trade befroe he is UFA?

Sedins.. on the fence.. 5 mill each maybe, or does this team need new direction?

Demitra.. no issues with him at all, bring him back as long as he is healthy.

Ohlund.. sad to see him go but again.. perhaps the team needs some new faces. - Thu, 14 May 2009 8:35pm

Hodgson has joined the Moose for the third round of the AHL play-offs.. Slated for a limited role on the fourth line. I'm hoping he earns more ice time. He is better than, or at least as good as Tavares. We got real lucky. In hindsight, he was worth not getting into the play-offs last season. - Fri, 15 May 2009 1:06am

I'm not nearly as avid as I once was on the game. Obviously, goaltenders are key to winning and losing playoff segments or Stanley Cups; BUT No team should have to rely on their goalie as much as Vancouver frequently seems to do. (for whole seasons sometimes)

Also, I finally watched a recording of most of game 7. Luongo let his temper affect himself adversely when people where crowding the net. This is an age-old tactic and chicago was way better at it than vancouver.

For the most part Luongo played excellently, but the rest of the team looked weak and lame. Then when buddy got spooked, he let in more consecutive goals than he has since 1999 or some shit. Hot-head goaltenders are doomed.

Like I say, I'm not very current, but this is a classic play-off failure by the team and the 'captain' at the same time.

These are 2 comments that have NO bearing whatsoever. Who are we to say they didn't care? How do you know the pressure these atheletes have to deal with day in day out. Sure its their profession; but we ALL have shitty days. Chicago is a good team; young, fast, but inexperienced. They took it to us like the hounds were just released. I think with more conditioning and fitness; the nuck's could've stood their ground more. It was always late in the game that shit went wrong(barring game 6); due to a)lack of conditioning and stamina b)fitness. Its simple for anyone who's played at ANY remote high level sports that it comes down to the basics. But for us, as fans, to say that they "looked" like they didn't care... is a little much, when YOU are the one watching from the sidelines. But I guess everyone considers themselves a better GM or Coach than the other.
I for one, am dissappointed, but improvements were made; and that keeps me happy. They showed emmense emotion after the loss; which showed THEY DID CARE. Im sure you also think they're babies for showing the emotions; but again, try competing at that level under that pressure DAY IN DAY OUT for the rest of your lives. - Sat, 16 May 2009 2:59pm

I think that the Canucks would have been better served by their first round series with St. Louis going 6 or 7 games. I get the impression that the guys were just expecting to win the Chicago series because they dumped all over another young, hungry but inexperienced team. Jl, I have competed in sports at a high level, not hockey though, and you know what, there are days/games, though rarely series, where your heart isn't in it and you just don't care.

Poppycock.
You could see in their faces and the way they were playing that they felt beat and didn't seem to have any hope of taking the series. The mental barrier set by the Game 4 bedshitting did them in.
As for them not caring...well, to use your example, they weren't well conditioned enough to keep up with the Cawks. For guys getting paid millions to play a sport, they better damn well be in top physical condition if they care enough to do the very best they can. Anything less is not giving a shit.
Had they given it their all, no one would be anywhere near as pissed and disappointed as they are. However, it was obvious they didn't give it their best shot, so they will be pissed upon as they so deserve.
Even the biggest homers I know that give them free passes for terrible play and lack of full effort feel this way.
Yes, they cried and looked sad when they were ousted. I would be too if I just realized I pissed away the best chance my team has had since '94 to do some damage in the playoffs. - Mon, 18 May 2009 5:13pm

Here's a comparison of the top six defensemen from Vancouver and Calgary. Why the comparison? Because if Sutter is stacking his defense, and we agree that our offense and goaltending are better, then we should have the Division in the bag.

Actual totals:

Vancouver
Salo..............60 GP 25 P +5 TOI 22:19
Edler.............80 GP 37 P +11 TOI 21:04
Bieksa...........72 GP 43 P -4 TOI 21:09
Mitchell..........82 GP 23 P +29 TOI 20:42
Ehrhoff..........77 GP 42 P -12 TOI 23:26
Schneider......67 GP 32 P -12 TOI 19:03
Lukowich

Calgary
Phaneuf.........80 GP 47 P -11 TOI 25:48
Bouwmeester 82 GP 42 P -2 TOI 27:54
Sarich...........76 GP 20 P +12 TOI 23:17
Regehr..........75 GP 8 P +10 TOI 18:53
Pardy............60 GP 10 P +3 TOI 17:37
