Power Stad I do. That guy was sweet. Talking to his shoes and picking up butts...the good life, yo.

What about "Conan" the strung out body builder that gave out buttons with nude photos of himself flexing on them. - Sat, 12 Apr 2003 7:06pm

stank ass It's going to drive me nuts trying to figure out what the Chinese guy's name was. Sinota? Sinaurta? Sin.. something like that. I'll figure it out. I've always heard that he was a professor who dumped a bunch of chemicals on himself, causing him to get that way.
I don't remember Conan, unfortunately. Although from the sounds of things, I'd probably kill for one of those pins to wear. - Sat, 12 Apr 2003 7:37pm

Troutbreath Has anybody seen Geshe-la (sp?) around lately? He's the Tibetan Lama who lives over on Leonard ST. I lived in his basement when I first moved to Victoria. David from the Salty Seamen lived upstairs and was trying to become a monk at the time. Geshe-la used to be around town all the time but i haven't seen him for a while. - Sat, 12 Apr 2003 9:04pm
odd jobs I have one for you.

Cliff aka... "odd jobs" aka..."spare a quarter for a cup of cawfee".
Used to be on Yates from Douglas to Blanshard. Nice harmless old guy. - Sat, 12 Apr 2003 9:10pm
FANG k... the old chinese dude was named 1) jerry and 2)Sonyata... he had a split p. and he used to take the $ tyhe govt gave him and buy shovels and throw them out of his apt window...and repeat. he enjoyed salt in his coffee. and one day they shot him up full of drugs and he spent the rest of his days drooling in silence. - Sat, 12 Apr 2003 9:16pm

stank ass I never see that old guy, Starvin' Marvin, with the white beard and mesh baseball cap around anymore either. "I'm Starvin Marvin. Spare some change?"

How do you know they did that to Soynata? Poor fella. - Sat, 12 Apr 2003 9:58pm
Dr.LOAD I remember the old Chinese man, everyone in my social circle used to call him "The Professor". One of my friends dads used to have coffe with him and yeah, he was a really nice guy whenever I talked to him. I'm sure that the shooting him up story is just another of downtown's stupid urban legends and I hope whereever he is that he is doing well. - Sat, 12 Apr 2003 10:08pm
wronskian and then there was the guy who said "spaaaaaare a little change today" over and over again incessantly. funny at first, but then irritating. - Sat, 12 Apr 2003 10:19pm

FANG "they" meaning the psychiatric doctors. Sonyata used to walk into the sally cafe covered in blood for getting beat up because he wears womens shoes and they would have to patch him up. - Sat, 12 Apr 2003 10:38pm
Japanese Air Force Yeah. The "Spaaaaaaaaaaare a little change today" guy is still around. I've seen him down towards Legends.

I haven't seen the opera singing, red pump wearin' Chinese guy for a long time, or Starvin Marvin, for that matter.

ML7Mike My dad lived with that old chinese guy back in the 60's.. Apparently he was very intelligent and a top student. I remember years ago when I was a teenager, I sold the guy a gram of hash. He came walking up , and he was talking to his hand, acting all strange, then all of a sudden he snapped out of it, and was ultra normal, checked out the hash, nailed me on it being a .8 gram, paid me, thanked me, then instantly snapped back into weird mode and started walking up the street talking to his hand again.

Troutbreath When I was 16 I worked at a Boat Rental in Horseshoe Bay. It was a popular place to fish in those days and I'd see the occasional wrestler, Don Leo Johnathan and Gene Kiniski to name a couple. One afternoon I was alone in charge of the place. The office was out on the floats and I was just hanging inside when the floats started rocking up and down. I looked up the docks to see what was going on and here came this HUGE guy and someone who turned out to be his wife. He was carrying an ice chest that looked like a kids lunch box he was so big. He came to the office window and I realized I was looking at 'Haystack' Calhoun. He weighed about 650 lbs. The dock the office was on was awash. I had water lapping at my ankles. We rented clinker built wooden boats with little one cylinder 'putt-putt' motor in them. The largest one had a maximum capacity of 700 lbs. I had to explain to 'Haystack' that he was.......um.....well I told him he would be more comfortable in a bigger boat. I had to send him over to Sewell's where they had big cabin cruisers. I think that was the day I learned diplomacy. My knees where shaking after he left. - Sun, 13 Apr 2003 5:02pm

He told me that he usually drinks between 4 and 5 of them a day. - Mon, 14 Apr 2003 9:35am
stank ass Remember any of the coke heads that used to hang around the Day & Fright and at the corner of Broad at Yates when the benches were there? I got to know a few of them when I was selling pot down there when I was a wee little tyke.

Here's a few of my oldtime favourites: Crack Head Claire doing the chicken walk in the middle of Yates Street... Pickalo, the black dude with the gold, engraved teeth... The crack head with the hook for a hand, who told me he was going to shove the hook through my dog's back for rough housing with another dog... Pony, the 30 year old pimp who knocked up, and subsequently had a child with, a 13 year old prostitute...

Tim's still a drunk downtown. Chico's dead. I've seen Max a few times over the years but we lost touch a while ago, he's still kicking though. Taz, I havent seen in at least ten years, thats a name I'd totally forgotten till you mentioned it. Red died of liver failure, and Angel kissed a big fucking truck on his motorcycle doing about a hundred. He did that once before as well and walked on a cane for a few years just trying to be able to walk again. He had a wife and a new born son the last time I talked to him, he died about two months later. To the anon idiot, why on earth would you hack me when I'm just trading old time stories with my friends here? What on earth does it accomplish to do that here? Idiot........... - Tue, 15 Apr 2003 8:30pm
S.V. Thanks for the update Jay. I've seen Alan around. He's fairly high profile having just recently run for City Council (got my vote). Shame about Angel, when did that happen? I'm not surprized Chico snuffed it, that was only a matter of time. The last time I saw him was during his "near death" experience with Ski & Ed. I worked with Taz for a while in '91. Glad to know Max & Craig are still living the good life. As for Tim....yeesh.

I see what you mean about a good portion of the "old crew" having snuffed it....I guess we're a dying breed ;) - Tue, 15 Apr 2003 9:34pm

Dave Okay, crazy talk-to-the-hand guy is Harold Saa. When I first talked to him around 1986 I thought he said Herring Saa so that's what we called him. He does go in and out of weird mode but there is also another guy the looks similiar to him as well - but I don't think he wears womens shoes. I used to work in Market Square and a friend of mine brought him in to see me.

"How is your mothers day going, Herring Saa?"

"It's muddas' day?"

"Yup"

"Not bad, I guess, but we are all mothers, aren't we?"

Cliff is dead but what happened to Elfin Man? He looked EXACTLY like Colonel Sanders but wore little cowboy boots, sometimes a fur coat, sold newspapers. I could'nt stop laughing when I saw him dressed in all green for St Paddys day - Pretty funny.

Oh the Speed Queens! I got kicked out of the Bay when I was with them once as they were spitting on people on the escalator - great gals, wonder where they are now...

The huge muscular guy that used to wear cut-offs, sunglasses and try to sell paintings of himself we used to call Lemmy. Obviously one too many LSD nose dives for him.

What about space lady and mommy that cruise the malls? Apparently they're called Puff & Spook. Older lady with younger lady that wears makeup like a cross between an open-casket and Mrs Munster.
