Art has long functioned as a code word for erotica in certain contexts. Phrases like "art photos," "art films," "art house" have all been co-opted by clever entrepreneurs to market porn soft and hard to audiences who could more easily accept the idea under this respectable rubric. This strategy was also one way to dumbfound law enforcement. In the sixties the term "art film" could mean a Bergman masterpiece, an Andy Milligan sleazefest, or a tasty slice of Radley Metzger Euro-erotica. (Gary Morris).

We at Shock Corridor Cinema believe that no film genre should sit in the garbage cans of censor board warehouses or become court fodder for the Christian Coalition. Rather, we wish to celebrate such genres and one such filmmaker who, if not solely responsible for making soft core the rave among the bourgeois of the early 70s, was in large part contributing to its acceptance within mainstream culture and film distribution. Metzger's films move far beyond traditional heterosexual coupling, catered for a sleazy male gaze. Film's like Therese and Isabell, The Lickerish Quartet and Score feature bi-sexuality in a sensual and playful manner, often couched in highly entertaining narratives, something contemporary porn is at a loss to produce. Often shot in beautiful locations, invoking cinematography that calls up Orson Wells more than it does The Mitchell Brothers, Metzger's films are a teat for the eyes, reminding us why 70s porn was as important to this decade's cultural tastes as say, The Godfather films.

"Score" (1972; 83 min.)

A rather adventurous middle-class couple set out to liberate their prudish neighbors by wadgeing on how quickly they can bed their same sex counterpart. Score represents Metzger's transition between softcore and hardcore, and it's appropriate that the film exists in several versions that tilt in one direction or the other. Score is a highly entertaining sexual roundelay, a sex farce based on a play originally set in Queens, New York. The action was moved to the Yugoslavian coastline, standing in for the French Riviera. As Metzger said, "Who wants to see sex in Queens?. Quirky, progressive and dare we say, sexy, Score is Metzger's finest hour of which, films such as The Ice Storm and Boogie Nights owe a great debt to.

The Radley Metzger Trailers (c.1965-1975; 25 min)

Like many other filmmakers toiling outside the realm of the respectable, Metzger was also a film distributor, and was less at the mercy of others in terms of choosing and realizing projects than his more mainstream counterparts. As a distributor, Metzger produced many trailers for films that were produced both in the center and at the margins: exploitation films, early Ingmar Bergman, drive in horror and Euro-erotica. For this program the evening will commence with a series of Metzger produced trailers specifically made for his own films. Often as gorgeous as the films themselves, these shorts give us some idea as to the origins of the industry term, "teaser". - Sun, 6 Apr 2003 6:38pm
