Just something I noticed, have you ever been driving through traffic or waiting at an intersection and seen a police car put their lights on, drive through the intersection and then turn their lights off and continue driving like normal? I have noticed this on more than one occasion, but one that got me yesterday... I was driving down Saanich Road and a cop car was waiting to turn onto Saanich, and there was quite a bit of traffic, he had been sitting there for a bit, so he turns on his lights, stops traffic and turns onto the street in front of me, the funny thing is I was behind them for about 2 minutes and then they turned into the same place I was going ironically enough “Tim Horton’s” It must have been worth stopping traffic to go on their break, they walked in the door in front of me, I waited in line behind them and bit my tongue and refrained from asking them why they have to abuse their power and disrupt traffic just because they don’t want to wait their turn…is it just me or does anyone else think our tax dollars should be going to better training for police to be a little more professional. - Mon, 28 Apr 2008 12:34pm Edited: Mon, 28 Apr 2008 12:37pm

I have seen this before and had they not gone to tim hortons, my agruement would have been that I would rather them going through a light and continue patroling rather than burning gas and doing nothing.

I know it’s kinda random and stupid to complain about this but, I just hate some cops with their Holier than Thou attitudes, and that they feel in a position of power and can abuse it when they feel like it, like talking on their cell phones while driving and speeding. But if we do it we get fined…just pisses me off that’s all, I know there is nothing I can do about it… - Tue, 29 Apr 2008 11:28am

Yeah sure, if they effectively dealt with those problems and didnt also beat wives, kids, or be pieces of shit and low lives.

Like anything else, they arent all bad, but the ones that are get away with a lot.

The vic ones are especially stupid as fuck, but I gotta admit I dont feel like im going to get beat the fuck down by telling one to fuck off like I could in other places.

The Van cops have actually been better than usual for the last 5 years or so. I think it is largely to do with a buch of them caught on video smacking people around for no reason when GNR cancelled their last show at GM Place. There were lawsuits galore after that incident, and thanks to T.V. news, the cops lost 'em all.

Our society is one that lets people choose their vocation. People who are attracted to powerful status, the ability to bend the law, and intimidating people can choose to become a police officer. I think it's a small portion of people who choose policing to "do good in society" because there are better ways to influence positive change, most without the violence and with more direct results. Even those who are determined to make a change can be corrupted by their co-workers or the trashy people they have to deal with. It creates a really one-sided view of people, such as all adolescents being troublemakers. These are the reasons I generally don't trust cops and have had bad experiences with them. Sure, they do good things, but they run lights for the fun of it and break all sorts of barriers for the fun of it. - Sun, 11 May 2008 3:22pm

The same can be said for a lot of professions. I've been quite saddened/disillusioned/angered by a few people in the music industry for instance. Its like an ink drop tainting the whole pool - but how the rest of us choose to deal with it and what perspective we choose to take can make a huge difference. We're bigger than them! - Mon, 12 May 2008 2:01am

In reply to Tyler: I agree with you that some people started out applying to work with a police force with honourable sincere intentions and then got corrupted once in. However I think that the majority started out that way.

Police have elaborate ways to discover personality traits and tendancies. Power hungry, intimidating, and law breakin aren't the attributes they want to hire. Once people are inducted into that little clique/gang they are brainwashed on so many levels that within a couple of years they are pretty much fucked up and most of their non-cop friends start to drift away and soon they are only around other cops even off duty.

Police Depts. are military in organization. There is a pecking order and you don't want to be at the bottom.

It frustrates them because often much of the work they do is negated by the courts. And so it should be but it must piss them off alot and make them disillusioned after a while.

Alot of what they deal with all day, day in and day out is the shitty side of society, or people injured, people that cause injury and do things that most people would find repulsive and they have to be respectful and polite to these people.

They find themselves often in situations which present sexual opportunities (why I don't know) and so their personal relationships suffer.

Many end up with substance abuse problems, emotional problems, etc. We spend huge money funding the number of cops on stress leave at any given time. People either associate with them because they're cops and others don't assicate with them for the same reason. They don't meet people easily or make friends. After 5 years or so they are basically messed up. It's US and THEM they think. I don't think they run lights or whatever type of infractions for fun. They just do it because they can. They are restricted from doing many things so that is just one little bit of fun in an otherwise long and boring or depressing or stressful shift. Another way to look at it is that by running red lights, speeding, etc. they may get more work done in a shift and we won't be paying them $35+ and hour (.58 a minute) to sit at a red light.

I've met some smart ones that got out of direct policing and go into forensics, or instructing. Most of all the other cops I have met, which have been many over the years, are dumber than a post. Some think they're smart though. Those are the dangerous ones. The only other smart cops I have met were dogs. - Thu, 15 May 2008 7:25am

of the police officers that I personally know; they aren't "messed up", nor do they have a complex of authority. They do not "abuse" any substance and are completely normal people. The illusion that police are all corrupt or become corrupt should stay in the movies(not to say ALL police force members are honest; but the majority around HERE, ARE honest people). I've never been in an altercation with a police officer that has "abused" their power; simply because Im not a dick when they ask a question or 2. This whole "its Us and Them" complex that some may think goes on, isnt totally wrong, but that's the way you see your dealings and your relation to the law enforcement. Some people like having a police officer walking the downtown core; some people feel safer when the police are around. Just imagine, if all law enforcement was dis-banded.
Every single one of you would be crying for some form of organized authority.

ps, i know i dont and cant speak for all law enforcement, but im not about to make assumptions based on hear-say or third party actions. I just know that the law enforcement officers that I associate with are HONEST, LAW ABIDING police officers. And until you walk a mile in a police officers shoes; dont make assume they're all out to get ya. - Thu, 15 May 2008 2:26pm

"organized authority"

Where I live there is no police presence. Little things to happen and they are dealt with. Mind you, it's a small community so there's really no need because no one is anonymous and everyone knows you don't get away with much when news travels as quickly as it does here. - Thu, 15 May 2008 5:58pm

Okay, so I'm gonna bore you with my cop experience from yesterday.

I was coming south along the Malahat yesterday afternnon, coming down the last passing lane before Goldstream and there's a black pickup in the left lane doing the speed limit, right next to a red van in the right lane (also doing 80).

So I flashed the black pickup to let me pass. They ignored me. I flashed them again. Again nothing, so I gave them a little toot on the horn. Still nothing. I'm starting to get a little frustrated and mutter under my breath " Fuckin' wannabe cops". Luckily the red van dropped back and I ended up blowing by the pickup on the inside.

I looked at the three guys in the pickup smiling at me so I fingered them and blew off.

I'm coming down the hill when I see the pickup flying up behind me. Then the blue and reds come on. Sheeit.

So it's three plain clothes officers. And one of them asked me "why the finger buddy?"

I replied " Because I thought you were a sanctimonious wannabe cop asshole, I come across them all the time." And I explained that they looked like they had just come off the worksite.

"So that's a little work- guy communication is it?"

"It's just a gesture. It doesn't mean anything anymore" I replied.

"It means fuck you" on of them said.

"So does staying in the left lane when you see someone flashing you to overtake."

"Fair enough".

Anyway I chatted with the three of them (and I warn ya, if you met these guys in the bar, you'd never know) congratulated them on their undercoverness (?), and ended up with no speeding ticket or anything but perhaps a sense that these guys are maybe not a lot different from some of the guys I work with, certainly they're a lot easier to talk to without those damn uniforms. - Fri, 23 May 2008 9:25pm

Glad that ended up amicably, though you could have been a bit more subtle I think.

The other day I witnessed someone being ordered through the built-in speakers of a ghost cruiser to pick up something he just dropped on the ground. The guy ignored them twice and the cruiser came screeching up next to him with lights flashing.

I can't stand littering, and the guy was even more of an asshole for littering within 10 feet of a trash can, but I probably would have ignored them too. If the cops want to tell me something, they can pull up, step out of their vehicle and speak to me in person. It's not like I carry a bullhorn around to communicate with them either. I can't stand that "the voice of God" correcting attitude from the comfort of their car seats. - Sat, 24 May 2008 10:22am
