Black Jack Here it is in a nutshell. i'm just ranting here. ineed to get it off my chest.
part one.
We have played a few gigs around town, my band likes playing gigs. But it's always me lining up the shows.I don't mind, over the last few years i've set-up 19 of the twenty shows, the one show i didn't set up was some party gig that fell on our laps.
i have mention several times at practice that it is everyones responsibilty to find gigs and promote the band.
But our members think people are just going to contact us (cause we are so good). you know its good to think your band is the best in an industry full of ego's and i beleive we a pretty good. But no one is going to knock on our door untill we make a name for ourselves.

Is it fair for one member of a band to organize shows, poster, contact all media outlets. promote the band through several music webpages.

We are in our late twentys and thirties so this band thing is just a hobby of sorts. We all dream of making it big someday but all realize keeping our present carreers is a much smarter thing to do. But does that mean we put in no effort and just wait for someone to stumble across us and give us a gig.

I'm just getting sick and tired of doing all the leg work and our band thinking we get gigs cause people think we are good. the truth is we get gigs cause the bars need different bands and we are better than some bands but not the best.

part two
another thing that bugs me is. Our guitar player always wants to play his own thing. I will write a song and come up with a rythym part or something and ask him if he can play it while i play something else, so we can work out the new song. Always within four bars he's quite playing what i want and gone on to something else(his own riff) while sometimes this works, sometimes you just want to work something out.If you mention something he gets offended, and always has some stupid reason for his lack of attetion span. He also insists on sing back ups and a couple of his own tunes. i mentioned nicely that many singers take vocal lessons (hoping he would get the hint that he needs vocal help, i did and still work on it)But he thinks he's getting better, but when he starts to sing during a chourus it throws me off and we sound bad. yet at the end of the gig he thinks we rocked. it's fucking painfull. we played gigs were we were so far of the timing that i quit playing and started singing different words to the song and made up shit on stage, yet no one in my band noticed.

I would just like to quit this band sometimes. it seems like i'm the only one that can see the thruth. But if i do i don't think i will find anyone alse to play with. also with out a scheduled jam time i may not make time to play.

i just wish i could find talented musicians to play with so i could learn from them, not get so frustrated that i want to quit.

i just had to vent that. - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 2:13am

Anonymous it sounds like you guys need some more time under your belts...something that helps with all that kind of stuff is hitting the road. Go on tour for a bit and see what it takes to play your tunes well every night. Things will become clearer for some people. Plus being on the road is fun. - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 9:43am

My initial reaction is that you should quit. You've pointed out every reason as to why. It doesn't sound like your band has the gusto to do anything more than keep it a hobby, and if you want more, you won't find it there.

You are all in your late twenties/early thirties and are STILL thinking you may make it big? You're insane! If you've been playing for a while and you haven't figured out that it takes SHITLOADS of work to make it anywhere, and if any one of you lazy assed members thinks things are just going to HAPPEN all by themselves, you are TOTALLY wasting your time and should quit now since you should have quite 5 YEARS AGO!

If you really want to make it, you need to find people who also want the same thing, but who are willing to make it happen themselves, not sit around thinkging they are great and that someone is going to come running to them to tell them how wonderful they are and won't they please accept a bunch of money and record deals.. oh please oh please!!??

You should have been over this dillusion when you reached 25. Success takes a lot of work, no matter what field you're in... - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 10:56am

Go solo man. Just you and your bass. That's what I'm gunna do... no more of this "the Senitiones" for me. Sure they're alright fellows, and they give me the support I need, but gee-golly, I could do it without them. They are nothing with out me. I am Mr. Feeling!

Guy.. It is time to start your solo career.

It's really fucking funny to see what happens when you say that. There's a predictable pattern that goes on too...

Disgruntled band guy - "Hey, we should try a second guitarist to round out our sound better."

Yngwie Malmsteen - "Yeah, why don't we get another singer too. Or maybe a second bass player too. Fuck!"

Disgruntled band guy - "Hey I just thought we'd be heavier/louder/better with another guy. You seem to be doing a lot of noodling all the time"

Yngwie - "Well I'm just trying to make your riffs sound better man! They're not exactly killer riffs you know. We need something better than the shit you write!"

Disgruntled - "Yeah, I know. That's why we should get another guitar in this. More input, differant sound, you know...."

Yngwie Van Halen - "Fuck you pansy assholes. I make this band man! If you wanna play bullshit then get someone else to play this shit. I'm outta here!"

Disgruntled - " Okay then..."

Problem solved. - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 12:32pm

hey, why all the beating around the bush? first off, tell everyone that you're tired of doing all the fucking work and if they want to keep getting gigs they're going to have to get UP OFF their asses and do something for it.

2nd: some people don't get it. instead of dropping hints to your guitar player tell him that his singing sucks so go home and practice the shit up. I think it's good that he fucks around with songs (shows creativity) but if it gets to be too much tell him tactfully to shove it.

c: make them read this thread. hahaha

i was in a band for a couple of years and things became more work than fun, personalities didn't gel quite right, people were getting kicked out and false senses of security adopted. "it's much nicer down here without HIM". now i'm playing with a new set of people and guess what, it's fun again.

just gotta measure out the pros and cons. it's all a balancing act anyway. - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 12:49pm
who are you? Maybe YOUR band is sick of you and your complaining so maybe YOU need to go create YOUR OWN band that YOU can control,Fred Durst. - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 3:24pm
ticklefish I know the feeling, and was there years ago. Haven't been in a band since as I have always wanted a "collaborative" band, not a "don't criticize my playing man, you do it then" kind of band. I've always wanted to improve, and welcome constructive criticism.

Attitudes and egos are the hardest things to deal with. I took a different road...albeit more expensive and alot slower. I invested in a good DAW (digital audio workstation), lots of gear, and lessons. I started off recording all teh parts myself, writing the whole song, trying to get decent demo quality recordings, then took those scratch demos to use to attract other players with ideas clearly defined. Found another guitarist songwriter who liked the approach and style and now we are in an amazingly productive bit of happily ripping each others songs apart and stripping away all teh junk to make them even stronger. In a few months, we will have a solid near pro-quality 6 song EP that we intend to use to get other players on board. Then ready for gigs, with a EP to hand out...hopefully be out there playing some gigs by late fall. It may sound slower, but this time, (after 15 years of either dealing with egos or stoned/pissed bandmembers showing up late for gigs and thereby breaking the "contract" with the club meaning no pay) it actually is heading right where we want it. - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 3:55pm
Anonymous fred durst? i think he's trying to shed control.not take it over. - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 9:02pm
ho hum If you expect all the creative control, you have to expect the responsibilty of setting up shows. I would hate to be in your band. - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 9:11pm

One guy always gets stuck with setting up the gigs. It's the same in every band. You have to live with it, or move on.

As far as the creative stuff, you have to be willing to let other people put their two cents in. If their contribution is lame, you either have to live with it, or move on. I think everyone in a band thinks their contribution is great - usually. - Fri, 14 Mar 2003 9:16pm

Black Jack Hey Thanks for all your input!
it was nice to here that some of you feel the same, that helped the most.
i really don't have many experiences with this music business bs.

I'm going to buy some recording gear and start recording my own stuff, that way i can work out guitar parts as much as i want.
also i will still lead my band to the end.what else can i do,quiting would only be weak.

it's tough being the leader of a group of five people, especially when they insist on having a piont of view...hahaha.

Christopher Elliot NO band member should ever be stuck doing a majority of the work. And if that's the case, the band-slave should be getting an extra money percentage. The band expects the payout to be even-right? So then adjust the workload according to the promotional work you put in, and if they whine about it, or come up with excuses that are irrelevent, they shouldn't even be enjoying the fruits of your hard work. "Fuck 'em" I say!

It really is disgustingly unfair, and happens more than we imagine. Probably the source of more band break ups.

You can always keep your ear to the ground for band mates that share the same zeal you have for getting the job done. - Sun, 16 Mar 2003 6:20pm

Anonymous Hey BB!!
To say quit in your late twenties is BULLSHIT.If you dont obtain your goals young.DONT EVER QUIT never to old to shred
and if it takes 30 yrs to find the music that sells so be it.Only losers quit ever.Yes i'm an older musician but i've
only recently realized my writing is appealing to the youth. My teenage daughter took some of our stuff to school.
And everybody wants it.And in about 3 weeks they'll have it.For a price.Lol.

My point was to quit the band he was in, not quit playing! :)

If people could just keep at it themselves, keep practicing on their own (not restricted by their band) for 10 - 30 years, you would all be MONSTER musicians! I've been playing off and on for getting close to 20 years now, but I've taken so many super long breaks, I haven't advanced much over the last 12 or 13 years. You only get out of it what you put into it as usual...
