| Jedi | IMMIGRANTS, not Americans and Canadians, MUST ADAPT. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans and Canadians. >However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to North America. >Our population is almost entirely comprised of descendants of immigrants. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of America or Canada being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans and Canadians, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language! "In God We Trust" is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture. If Stars, Stripes and a Maple Leaf offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam or Beavers, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. These are OUR COUNTRIES, our lands, and our lifestyles. Our First Amendment and in Canada, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, gives every citizen the right to express his or her opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so. | Troutbreath | Jedi: "In God We Trust" is our national motto." I'm guessing that you are an American who has moved to Canada so let me point out a couple of things. "In God We Trust" is an american motto and is definitly not Canadian. Canada does not have the same history or traditions. We have two national languages and we allow and encourage people to preserve their own traditions. Canada by government policy is considered a multicultural country. While there are Christians here this couintry was built by as many Chinese Bhuddists as Christians. By the way, I'm a Canadian citizen, been here since age 2 months, but I was born in a foreign country. Apparently people are aiming to change things so that I'll be considered "less" of a citizen than those born here. | anonymr. | Jedi, even if the facts you stated were correct (which they're not - i'm dittoing what was said above) they still wouldn't support your argument. sure, at any given moment, canada has a particular culture. but, to me, what makes this culture great is its elasticity. it's not bounded by some rules some white christian men wrote down long ago. even if "in god we trust" was our motto, it would only be a good thing to take a step back and reexamine whether it should be removed or not. relying on the past to determine such important things in the present and future without any room for improvement would be irresponsible and self-destructive. of course, the raving nationalists will disagree by spouting off about such vague notions as patriotism and the scary thing is that they make perfect sense to themselves. - Tue, 11 Mar 2003 5:47pm | ||

Had our parents, grandparents etc. not arrived here from over seas we certainly would not be able to spout on like Jedi. Canada is only as strong as the many peoples who are here, side by side making it that way. Right now the Americans are an Island unto themselves and don't understand strength comes from diversity. | jay brown User Info... | Well my family got here in 1756 caught the boat from liverpool to new york, which took five weeks, then took the stage coach out west, which at the time was still cowboys and indians. My grandma still has my great great great grandpas diary of his travels over here. Heres a little canadian history for you, my great great grandpa had the first underground railroad into canada to help the slaves escape. His farm was also one of the first to hire the native indians and pay them wages and build them schools and churches and homes to live in. I'd say I'm pretty much as canadian as you can get, and I dont mind people moving here at all. I like the idea of living in a society filled with diversity I think it makes things interesting. The story goes that my ancestor (an Englishman, or maybe Scottish) got into a bar fight in Swizterland and thought he killed his opponent.... Therefore, he split for Canada.... I don't care if it's true, it make a good story.... Both sides of my family come from a strong tradition of farmer socialism, and I like to think by supporting cultural, linguistic, sexual, and other forms of diversity, I'm carry that tradition...... Unless your saying northern Americans helped with the canadians on getting them to temporary safety until the war was over. It was the north against the south.
