The Government announced a big plan to improve transit in BC's biggest cities. Victoria among them.

BC Transit has already unveiled their plans to have dedicated bus lanes and rapid transit run down Douglas Street, from the Empress to Town and Country and beyond.

I think Victoria and Kelowna need rail for their exploding bedroom communities like Langhole/Colwood and the Westside of Kelowna and Rutland - Wed, 16 Jan 2008 12:51am

no mention of extending bus times later in the night. I don't get it. I don't drink but you'd think it would make sense for transit to extend until 3:00 in the morning or so for major routes, for the bar crowd. I go to a lot of all-ages shows and some bar shows. I live in Langford and the 50 is a major route. Yet, it usually ends around 11-12, depending on the day. Seriously, would it cost that much to extend bus times? It could be really sparse and only involve a couple extra regular drivers. So many other cities our size do it. Yet it's always retarded shit like "streamlining traffic" and making busses run more within a time frame. I don't need to see a 30/31, 50, 4, 14, or 27/28 every 20ish minutes during peak times. I just want freaking later busses. I just want to go home after shows.

I'm still pissed that the transit schedule isn't very well-planned, busses tend to not match their times, some bus drivers abandon routes, and the 61 from downtown pretty much got canned. but those are other issues. I swear this shit doesn't cost as much as they claim and there are upper level planners/managers doing a horrible job. and there's literally pretty much nothing I can do. - Wed, 16 Jan 2008 8:28am

I think it's about time for some action on this whole transit/traffic issue. The NDP promised this stuff 10 years ago.

Yes BC Transit has been working on plans for Victoria for a few years already. In the long run, things should get better. But people have to take responsibility too. - Wed, 16 Jan 2008 10:56am Edited: Wed, 16 Jan 2008 10:59am

Tyler and myself both pretty much share same views

and ha i think their latest change as he said was during peak times to have major routes come to stops 5-10 mins apart
and while they did that they reduced slightly all the later buses and most don't run as late on weekends now etc.

I don't drive, don't really plan on driving anytime
haven't found a place in town yet so at my parents place in Sooke after last year at UVic ended. and now work at an office downtown, then usually stay out for shows, etc.
so i do a lot of busing - Wed, 16 Jan 2008 1:40pm

Also notice that out of that 14 billion

only about 1.2 billion was going towards the Rapidbus program

and that is going in place in Kelowna as well

if only they showed victoria more love.. you think they might since a lot of those MLA's have to spend half their time here - Wed, 16 Jan 2008 1:42pm

For one thing, traffic in this city is already terrible (I would support any plan for mandatory licence re-testing). Changes to the transit system might actually improve things if it gets some of the clowns out of their cars.
Victoria could really use a light rail system of some kind that went out the penninsula to the ferries and also to Sooke.
Also, the buses clearly need to run later to address the bar crowd. Think of all the drunks it would prevent from driving and also it would save ICBC and the cops a fortune on road blocks. I live in Brentwood and it's at least a $50 cab ride home from town. - Wed, 16 Jan 2008 6:54pm

I have no problem with transit improving. I do believe that neglecting to install rail transit that can be expanded to the outer reaches of our area is a giant waste of money. Why not improve the system intelligently?
You want to get people out of their cars? Rail system is your best bet.
Sitting in traffic held up by construction sucks. - Wed, 16 Jan 2008 7:06pm Edited: Wed, 16 Jan 2008 7:37pm

ya i think in one of the many articles the minister of transportation said there wasn't high enough numbers in users of the transit to justify a rail transit here..

but so many more people would probably use transit if it was here..

where as if they just improve bus times.. i doubt many more will use it... than those that already are - Thu, 17 Jan 2008 9:27am

Eventually there will be though. Why not have it ready for when it's needed in 45 years?
Most people who drive hate taking the bus, hence the car. From my own POV, I would be inclined to take the train out to Langford to have drinks with my buddy Bram, but not the bus because it sucks. - Thu, 17 Jan 2008 3:47pm Edited: Thu, 17 Jan 2008 3:47pm

Any one here ever lived in calgary?
there's a transit system that slays!
the LRT runs until 2am now, it's always on time, way easier on fuel/electricity and carries more.
the buses are also DEADLY on time EVERYTIME there. there's even a number system on each stops sign that you can call in to a number, punch in your stop and bus # and it tells you when the next three are coming AND like I said, you know they will be on time.

SO IN CONTRAST TO VICTORIA TRANSIT:
1. the only CONSISTANT thing about the buses is the INCONSISTANCY
2. i have talked to dozens of people who would take transit if it was just ON TIME and esp. running later.

mr. HELL...
you're totally right. why aren't we thinking about 40 years down the road? we can see that victoria is booming and that it's not that far away until the communities of Victoria(all parts), langford and colwood are all amalgamated into one region. This again is something I've seen with Calgary gobling up little communities like Airdre. - Thu, 17 Jan 2008 5:00pm

A: Govt types who make these decisions drive luxury cars, certainly dont travel via public transit, and very certainly do not live near Colwood or deal with the crawl.

B: Not sure how a bus lane will help. take every person out of every car at every red light in the Colwood crawl and you'd need about 1 bus per minute packed like sardines to alleviate the jam.

In reality they will have about 1 bus every 5 minutes, and the jam will not be lessened whatsoever as most sane people will avoid the 'sardine packed disease wagon' and drive their own car. - Fri, 18 Jan 2008 12:17pm

yeah, the bus lane is a step back.
it seems insane, but a light rail transit from downtown to sidney is the long term transit solution to the crawl.
in calgary there were park 'n go areas next to each stop... and it was free.
of course the logistics, land purchases and construciton would be massive, but you'd free up alot of clogging.
