The Most Important Event In Canadian History (A.K.A. Here Come The Tent-Cities)

-

JANUARY 9th and 10th, 2008, the Provincial Government of BC is bringing us to a BC Supreme Court judge to attempt a discontinuance of the 'Right to Sleep' Charter Challenge that is due to begin JANUARY 28th and is set for a five day trial.

Success of the Charter Challenge, the striking of the Corporation of the City of Victoria's 'anti-camping' and chattel bylaws, would mean that the people's right to facilitate survival would preclude any restriction if done conscientiously. Meaning we could set up tents with an attitude of minimal damage, anywhere we saw fit, ultimately not limited to any 'private property'. Making those who would restrict their 'property' having to make it physically inaccessible (12 foot high razor wire fences around the parks) or to simply trust in the good nature of people. I trust the first tent-cities will begin on government land, as, generally speaking, people would like to impose as little as possible on the sensibilities of those who've long held property 'bought' from the 'crown'.

Being a Constitutional issue, every municipality in Canada would have to adhere. In time there will be multiple tent-cities- some for families, some more 'front line' (where many angels will get their training).

The beginning of the tent-cities mark the end of capitalism, most notably when a mass of people understand that they no longer 'have' to pay rent, bringing economic collapse.

This is for real, folks... If the court says we must pay to live it means that their fascists and we're slaves. It means, knowing better, there would be no way to maintain sanity AND ignore the responsibility of rather being dead than corrupt. Patience be with us all.

Gotta love the delirium this fool lives in. Tent cities popping up across the country. You are not going to be successful, and you will continue to be the boil on societies ass. When all this is over and you have failed, I hope someone seriously decides to lance you so we can be rid of you and your ilk. - Fri, 4 Jan 2008 10:20am

The 1800's are long gone. If you want to plant a flag on property that is not yours pal, time to start hiking north. If you pitch a tent on my land I paid for and pay taxes on, I'll be there with my gun. If you obstruct and/or make a mess of any government property, I'll be there with my air horn and taser.

Good luck! - Fri, 4 Jan 2008 11:32am

We were walking through Beacon Hill Park last weekend to feed the duckies, and there was a mini tent city, complete with shopping carts, tarps etc. It looks disgusting and ruins the beautiful park landscape and makes children nervous and uncomfortable. Please don't sleep in public parks, if you choose to be homeless, which ultimately IS a choice...why be so close to town? To soak up any free resource made available to you at our cost? I have no sympathy for you..."imagine" a city where you could walk down the street and not be asked if you have money on you "which is no ones god damn business", or have to step over people or watch your back in parkades...or smell urine and other lovely scents that you waft into the air!!! Yes I am heartless when it comes to this subject; the only homeless person I have sympathy for is Mentally Ill unable to find work and stability. Drug addict’s meh...they chose to do drugs...and they are some of the most dangerous people on the street. Unpredictable and always searching for money for the next fix...I live downtown (In a house). lol.. And I hate this... there are parts of my own city I won't walk through in daylight...its really sad! - Fri, 4 Jan 2008 1:48pm Edited: Fri, 4 Jan 2008 1:50pm

I tried to resist; but realistically, in my opinion(and if its fate that's brought me here and i cant change it; oh well), tent cities are a fucking eyesore and you pieces of shit need to get your ugly unshaven/showered heads out of your smelly ass. THAT'S the reality of it DaJ... NOBODY wants what you do; take a fucking hint lol. Its laughable to even percieve that YOU think YOU'RE going to "win" this battle. I'll do everything I can to take apart your silly make-shift shanty shacks and ensure that YOU REALISE what its really like to live a life in squaller.

With today's mental health/addiction issues, tent cities may be somewhat unavoidable.
If the citizens with computers bitch loudly enough about it, the police will have the mandate to bulldoze, but that will only temporarily solve the nose and eyesore. Society has to put these people somewhere, or else they will just end up in our parks.
This issue will continue with or without our attention whore Daj. Getting angry at him solves no ting.

"With today's mental health/addiction issues, tent cities may be somewhat unavoidable"

how so? Just because someone is mentally unfit in our opinion doesn't give them the right to set up shop anywhere they please and call it home. We cant do that, even IF we were mentally/physically unfit as taxpaying working honest citizens(and you cant tell me there aren't honest citizens that have mental health issues). I dont disagree that room/space is a high priority with our ever expanding array of condo's in our downtown core; but in the same respect what solutions CAN we offer? aside from the obveous, needle exchanges etc... There isn't a way to just profile everyone on the street and determine who gets what because of their condition. Christ, if i was homeless Id cry mental health problems. Not because I have them, at least in my opinion, but because it seems to give you more manuverability as a homeless person... heartless i know; but the fact of the matter is, unless your a doctor or can magically profile people without talking to them; how can we, as a society, make a choice as to who gets what in terms of help/treatment etc. Furthermore, how many doctors would or could be contracted out for this "profiling project"? While you may make fun of these internet tirad's we all have against Daj, I make no joke in my opinions of these so called "tent cities" and feel they are no way a help to anyone with mental or physical health issues; it seems to be more of a societal cop-out. I wish I could offer a solution but a)im in no position to do so(ie, i dont have a political background nor do I have a medical background) b)i dont have much sympathy for those of the likes of Daj and his beliefs. Therefor I have NO sympathy for these tent cities! - Fri, 4 Jan 2008 5:06pm

"I dont work 80 hours a week (and come home barely able to stay up past 6 pm) so other people can go on welfare and do drugs/drink/sit around in parks."

80 hours a week!? Shit, I'd rather be homeless...
I mean, I work 45 hours a week (well probably quitting next week but will find another job soon enough) and that's tough enough. Not that the work is tough, it's tough mentally- to come home and think "man, there goes 9 hours I'll never get back." Don't sell all your time man, it's all you really have. One day you'll wake up with all these things and no time, and then FUCK you're dead and things don't matter anymore and all you really want is time. That being said my "standard-of-living" seems pretty low. I can't afford a nice big place to live and a nice car and all that. But I do enjoy my life a lot more than most people. It's like the Tao te Ching (I quit my last job after reading this line): There may be jade and gold to fill a hall, but there are none who can posses.
Or like Velvet Underground: Some people work very hard, and still they never get it right. Awwww baby now I'm beginning to see the light. ... of course they did a lot of heroin...

My point is. 80 hours. Woah. Unless you were just exaggerating, then don't read anything I just typed. - Fri, 4 Jan 2008 8:54pm

Andrew: No, we DO NOT live in a facsit society. It is very easu to think that, and it's even easier to compare and contrast with past "facist" societies, but the fact is, Canada is not one. The reason it is so easy is because there is no real economic difference or structure between the two; one was builr from the other.

http://www.marxists.org/archive/trotsky/works/1944/1944-fas.htm

Here's a good read for anyone interested in seeing how one could argue that we do not live under facism.

Aidan, read Momo. We don't really sell our time to the "man". We do sell our labour power to a capitalist for the exchange-value of said capital, and recieve the use-value, but it is not like Momo where we have Men in Grey and Time-saver banks where we spend less time doing things now so we have more later, ect, ect....just read the fucking book. - Wed, 9 Jan 2008 8:22am

Darcy, don't confuse facism with totallitarian or authoritarian forms of government. They are different. Facism IS a socio-economic policy platform. Hell, the US Republican party has been essentially facist for the last 30 years or so, and if we keep Bush's bum buddy Harper in government too much longer, well end up with a facist system too. Me, I'm happy enough with our social democracy, but I'd rather see an adaptation of Finland's VERY successful socialist system installed in Canada. Too bad socialism is still right up next to pedophilia on the taboo chart in North America.

I just listened to a song called Christmas in the Valley by a band called Angel Lust. It's cool it starts out melodic you think maybe it'll be metal but it turns out to be fast and punk with cool metally guitar in some parts. Anyway, in it they say-

"Fuck the government up their asses, they steal our money and they steal our freedom, fuck society, fuck religion....then I'm not sure cuz I don't have the lyrics but you get the point. I like the song.

I bet they have jobs and places to live though, so they can play shows and stuff.

Yes Andrew, communism would suck; however, I said that I would like us to have a Socialist system which is a completely different animal. We are fortunate in Canada that we have a partially socialist system of governance already (thank you Britain). We get more or less free health care, our public education system is great, and our post-secondary system, aside from being top rate, is way cheaper than non-socialized systems like the U.S. or France. I just think that a completly socialist country would be that much better and would certainly make better use of the resources that we have here in Canada.

Other than that...there aren't any countries that will even bother.
