Hockey........4 on 4

Why the fuck not?
For years and years I’ve been a proponent of this awesomely awesome beautiful “chawn-cept” – to deaf ears (here too, I suspect). For the first time, ever, I’ve FINALLY seen a ‘pundit’ on TV today espousing this most perfect of all perfectly beautiful ideas.

Your average meathead fan* will miss the physicality – it would remain to be seen if ticket sales would be affected in the bigger leagues. We’re an adaptable species, though, so we’ll probably get used to it, along with getting used to more open playmaking, end-to-end hockey with TRILLIONS more scoring chances, and less off-sides and icings. The younger leagues will certainly adapt to it, much in the same way that the young’uns adapt better than the old’uns to almost everything.

It has a nice Darwinian aspect to it, too – if you’re not a good skater – hit the road, shitnuts, and yet it still will definitely be “crowded” enough to require heads up deeking and hitting. Maybe a few more groin pulls at the beginning of the season, but we’re such an uber species, aren’t we? We’ll evolve, gosh-darnit!

Hey – I like my 1.75 fights per game just as much as the next joe, got it? – so I’ll be the first one to acknowledge (which means shut yer fucking yap about it if you try saying anything otherwise) the one big downside to this otherwise “plum-glorious” idea: less pow-pow.

Oh well.

I’m willing to see less of that in exchange for unquestionably more exciting hockey.

*pardon the generalization, but I’m referring to the average fucking American bozo fan.

The way they're pulling it off so elegantly these days, you probably make a good point, curmudgeon. - Mon, 10 Dec 2007 9:13pm Edited: Mon, 10 Dec 2007 9:14pm

Recently a friend argued that there's no way we're healthy enough to skate a full game four on four. Sure - we're certainly not used to it because we've played five on five all our lives, however, the problem can be quickly rectified by having shifts averaging 20-25 seconds long instead of 40-60. And taking a more serious approach to cardio training. - Mon, 10 Dec 2007 11:20pm Edited: Mon, 10 Dec 2007 11:22pm
