Wow, lots of whining going on in this topic.

I think Spinvis' link shows that these mascots are perfectly in line with their equally silly Olympic predecessors.

Did you really find it shocking that they're using the Inukshuk for the main symbol, not something West Coast? The fact that the Games take place on the West Coast is interesting to people from BC only. Internationally speaking it is all about the fact that they're being held in CANADA.

I don't think there has been a single Olympic Games where emphasis was laid on the actual region where the game was held. Be honest, do you think of the immediate surroundings of Seoul or the local folklore of the villages surrounding Lillehammer when you think of previous Games? Ofourse not, all you (care to) remember is Korea and Norway.

Same goes for Vancouver 2010. You'd think people would be more stoked that the world's gaze will be fixed upon Canada, and their own area especially. Something to be at least a little bit proud of, isn't it? The Games are going to do a lot more good for this province and everyone living in it (including First Nations) then all of you want to admit. - Thu, 29 Nov 2007 10:01pm

I know it's about Canada. I am a westcoast art collector and I just think a Raven, Thunderbird, Wolf or Bear done by Tony Hunt Sr would have been better than some stones stacked in a pile. Technically Sarah McLachlan is from the Maritimes not B.C., but even if she was from Northern Ontario, she still kicks Avril's ass. I don't know, maybe she was busy?

Canada is a much larger, more diverse country than Norway or South Korea. Calgary had cowboy hats. B.C. has the richest artistic community in Canada, and in my opinion it should be showcased.

There is nothing wrong with us being all upity about this topic. The world is watching, and I for one want them to see our best. - Thu, 29 Nov 2007 10:51pm

THE BENEFITS http://www.winter2010.com

HOW THE 2010 OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC WINTER GAMES BENEFIT YOU

Vancouver 2010 is a sweeping province-wide vision to create new jobs, boost our tourism industry,
generate new opportunities for small business and attract new investment. The Games are also
accelerating critical infrastructure improvements that have been on the drawing board for years.
82 per cent of Canadians support the Bid. Community leaders, along with those from business, sport and
culture wholeheartedly endorse it.
Their reason why is simple. They believe the Olympics are good for Canada. Here's why the Olympics are
good for British Columbia and what they could mean for you.

MORE JOBS
It is estimated that the Games, combined with an expanded convention centre, will generate more than
200,000 new jobs over 20 years.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Two Olympic Villages, one in Vancouver, the other in Whistler, will provide market and affordable housing
units after the Games are complete.

SPORT LEGACIES
New or upgraded athletic and community facilities will be in place well in advance of the 2010 Games,
and will be endowed with $110 million in legacy funding to operate them into the future.

INCREMENTAL PUBLIC REVENUES
An economic study of the financial impact of the 2010 Olympic projects in combination with the expanded
Convention Centre reports incremental tax contributions − largely from tourism, hospitality and
conventions − of nearly $2.5 billion over 20 years.

BOOST TO BC ECONOMY
The same economic impact study reported a projected increase in the province's GDP of $10 billion over
20 years. That's the growth impact on our economy across all sectors, from retail sales to tourism to
construction. This number does not include any additional increase in foreign sales of BC goods and
services, nor any incremental foreign investment made in BC as a result of the Games.

GLOBAL PROMOTIONAL EXPOSURE
Analysts have concluded that, as host of the 2000 Olympics, Sydney received $6 billion in free publicity −
essentially a $6 billion global advertising campaign for Australia tourism, at no cost. Vancouver and British
Columbia tourism, small business and companies in emerging industries would receive similar world-wide
exposure.

A NATIONAL PRIORITY
The federal government strongly supports the 2010 Bid and has pledged more than $310 million to the
Games Legacies. The Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are a priority project of the Government of
Canada.

IMPROVED INFRASTRUCTURE
In addition to sport legacies, hosting the Games would accelerate needed infrastructure projects. These
will yield long-term benefits to the province, in the same way that the Coquihalla Highway, Cambie Street
Bridge and SkyTrain have become valuable legacies of Expo '86!

A HEALTHIER PROVINCE
With the addition of new and improved athletic facilities, as well as the attention given to sports and
athletic activity in the years leading up to the Games, we have a chance to improve the health and fitness
of the entire province, in particular among the youth of BC. A healthier population means less demand on
the health care system, which in turn will make our system more sustainable.

COMMUNITY LEGACIES
With the incremental tax dollars generated by the Games and related activity, the province will have the
financial ability to fund important social programs and crucial public services like health care and
education.

THE INVESTMENT

OPERATING BUDGET
The costs of actually putting on the Olympics − operations and administration − are expected to be
covered by revenues generated by the event. Revenues to fund the games come from various sources
including TV broadcast rights, sponsorships, tickets sales, licensing fees, donations and the sale of some
assets after the Games. Federal and provincial government contributions to the hosting costs include
funding of services such as policing and security. This results in a break-even scenario for the Games
themselves, a reasonable target considering the $160 million profit realized by Salt Lake City

FACILITIES
If Vancouver wins the right to host the Games, the province has pledged a total of $310 million over six
years to fund the necessary facilities for the Games. This investment is matched by $310 million from the
federal government to cover the cost of construction of new athletic facilities such as a speed skating
complex at SFU, hockey arena at UBC and Olympic Villages, as well as upgrading existing facilities to
world-class standards. Included in this investment are $110 million in legacy funds to allow the facilities to
be maintained and operated for public use after the Games, at no additional cost to the community.
The 2010 Olympic Games are fully supported by the provincial and federal governments and private
sector. The costs of the investment are shared, and so are the benefits – by the entire province and
country.

WHERE THE NUMBERS COME FROM
The financial forecasts behind the Bid include information from a highly respected team of experts,
including representatives from Expo ’86, the Calgary 1988 Olympic Winter Games and the 2002 Salt Lake
City Games. They have been subjected to intense professional review.
The long-term financial projections are based on an economic impact study prepared by Capital Projects
Branch, Ministry of Competition, Science and Enterprise. For more information on the complete study,
please go to http://www.mcaws.gov.bc.ca/2010

Im glad there's still people that support the olympics. And as was mentioned above in a previous post; I am proud that our province was chosen to host the olympics and think that it will do more good than people are willing to give it. Shoot off all you want about health care, homeless, un-employment; the bottom line is that we will see an influx of people in our province which HOPFULLY turns to benefitting our economy. And worse case senairio, its a flop and you hippies get to point fingers and feel all justified about your point of view :) (so it really cant be all that bad for both sides) - Fri, 30 Nov 2007 1:51pm

Having worked production on two Commonwealth games (Auckland N.Z. 1988, Victoria Canada 1992) and being to this very day owed NZ$17,000 and CDN$10,000, it's fair to say I have absolutely no love for events such as these. It has been my personal experience that these events breeze in with a great number of promises, and leave a trail of bankruptcy behind.
The committee is selected for each event, and at the close is dissolved, leaving no-one liable for debts. We saw how Vancouver experienced a short term boom after expo '86, and how in the late '80s early nineties this windfall soured, leaving many small businesses bust.
I don't mind competitive sports, they're part of our make- up as human beings, but like all entertainment industries, it now feeds a smalll number of corporate types while feeding off the masses. No thank you. - Sat, 1 Dec 2007 2:11pm

If only some of you were around in 1985 when Expo '86 was being hyped. More jobs, more infrastructure, everything sun shiny. Just wait until Expo! Everything will be great then!

Look at Vancouver now. Traffic gridlock, 500 square foot condos for $500,000 dollars, expensive everything. Downtown Eastside nightmares and no one on the streets enjoying the town. Everyone tucked safe and sound in the malls like lemmings.

How has this improved anything? - Sat, 1 Dec 2007 2:11pm Edited: Sat, 1 Dec 2007 2:12pm

Im not sure as to what happened with the commonwealth games but when they came to victoria(if anyone knows the financial report of the event) did they cause a downfall trail of bankruptcy? If I do recall*(as my family owns a couple jewlery stores downtown that heavily depends on tourism) our business sales were up more than my family can ever remember; but again I dont know what the actual financial records of the commonwealth games are.
And to compare expo 86(and i remember the hype) to the olympics isn't a fair comparison. Expo, while hyped much the same way as the olympics, hardly drew or would draw anything close to the appeal world wide of the olympics. - Sat, 1 Dec 2007 2:30pm

homeless people and they're houses being taken away? wtf? they're homeless how can they have a home?
It seems like people are stretching for excuses NOT to have the olympics come here... any others?
The link provided was pretty eyeopening but also we have to remember that the places they spoke about are MUCH more densly populated in comparison to Vancouver. Homeless aside; what other negatives are there when the Olympics come? Better roads? more training facilities for OUR atheletes? better training for the atheletes or people trying to achieve the highest level of sport they can? Health benefits from a fitter more active community? Or should we be spending all this money on a health care system that people will still bitch about even when its been revised?
I for one think more about the athelete side of the olympics and all new access' to facilities and coaching/training availible to us. Canada needs to fund our athlete's much more in comparision with the rest of the world(I know its a hard arguement for me to make on a board filled with people that probly have about as much compassion for sports as they do their morning hangover dump; but that's just how I feel)

That's actually one of the things about the Olympics that I'm looking forward to. Hopefully there will be a street cleansing blitzkrieg on both sides of the Strait attached to this event. Obviously the homeless aren't getting their homes taken away... I was referring to what has happened in other places that have hosted the Olympics. In Atlanta developers demolished 13 public housing communities, promising all those who were evicted a place to live in the new housing units... They systematically evicted the tenants for the slightest infractions so they wouldn't have to make good on their promise. The new building had 30% low-income units, but almost none of the poor former tenants could pass the credit and background checks... So, a lot of them became homeless. Believe it or not, some homeless people used to have homes but lost them unfairly. It could happen in Vancouver. That thing about how the Olympic village in Vancouver will be for low-income people when the Olympics are over... It's a lie. - Mon, 3 Dec 2007 8:53pm

It's not so much the Olympics. It's the developers and planners. By the way, when I said the Olympic promises, I was referring to the specific promises about affordable housing that someone else posted, not Olympic promises in a general sense.

There's nothing wrong with the Olympic and supporting athletes. I just think that what is done by the city and by developers to prepare for the games should be in the best interest of all the people in the city. - Tue, 4 Dec 2007 3:05pm

thanks doc, i've been working with devin and his comprehension skills but alas here we are back at square one.
It seems that anything I believe in, to devin, usually a "generic obnoxious statement". I dont believe my original post in favour of our athelets was obnoxious nor was it supposed to be offensive. I was simply making a point that its not just the homeless issue, at hand, that can be solved over-night and certainly not with empty promises. But at the same time there are many others that CAN benefit from the Olympics; and it seems people lose sight of that. Im sorry if you couldn't understand that Devin, but I'll do better next time ;)

ps, spinvis; i cant wait to see some of the events... and Im hoping to catch some of the hockey; but i understand those tix are hard to come by. And on a sidenote, squash was almost considered an olympic sport; I believe we lost out to beach volleyball or sumthing(its already part of the commonwealth games) which would beef up the Canadian Squash organization/training/facilities quite well! but maybe next time! lets all hope "bridge" doesn't come in the way of the sports voting next time lol. - Wed, 5 Dec 2007 1:33pm Edited: Wed, 5 Dec 2007 1:38pm

Actually, I agree with Devin, and here's what I recommend: Stop imagining that I've attacked something that I haven't just to give yourself fuel for arguing. Let me summarize my points, and let's just see if you can still disagree.

1. People lose their houses because of Olympic developments, and this is a bad thing.
2. Homeless people are treated like shit and swept under the rug so that tourists can enjoy clean and safe shopping, and this is rather disgusting.
3. Low-income housing is hardly ever replaced, and this is a bad thing.

Support Olympic athletes. Sure, why not? They aren't responsible for any of that stuff. Did I say they were? It's developers and planners who are usually responsible. I think it's great that the Olympics are coming to Vancouver... I just think it's terrible that a lot of other shit comes with it.

If you want to start arguing that temporary and ineffective ways of dealing with the homeless are good things, then we'll really be talking! If you want to argue that the west coast needs more ridiculously expensive condos with excellent views, then we'll have a great discussion! - Wed, 5 Dec 2007 10:35pm

man devin, you really are such a little shit. Grow up and stop the trolling. We had a fine discussion going on until you showed up; and it seems you've ruined about EVERY other thread you post on. Go find somwhere that accepts your bs trolling lifestyle.

So I missed the fucking "T" in cant. BLOW ME ASSHOLE.

but like I said, if you actually took the time to read a full post; it might not make you look like such a douche. - Thu, 6 Dec 2007 1:58pm

Take the time to write a post properly, and take the time to narrow your argument against someone's point down to something even remotely relevant to the aforementioned point.

Let me break it down nice and easy once more:

JI: I did not say the homeless problem could be solved overnight.

But JI, it says right there in your post! (Insert quote here!)

JI: OMG TROLL WTF WTF BULLSHIT TROLL YOU RUIN EVERYTHING PERSONAL INSULT PERSONAL INSULT YOU CAN'T READ BOOHOO!

...

You're just angry because you ran out of excuses and totally unrelated arguments to drag into this. If a good discussion is one in which you draw in entirely irrelevant facts and conclusions until whoever you are arguing with gives up trying to reason with you, then you're a master. But don't call me a troll for calling you on it. You are more interested in 'winning' every discussion you enter into than you are in contributing constructively to it.

Now fuck off, I got work to do. - Thu, 6 Dec 2007 4:34pm Edited: Thu, 6 Dec 2007 4:40pm

now your just plain trying to get a rise outta me. You saw my last post that I clearly admitted to a spelling mistake and if you took the time to read previous posts you'll see that I did in fact, clearly, state that the homeless problem isn't something solved over night and with or without the olympics coming here. I dont know what your problem is and why you have a hate on for me, but grow the fuck up. And btw, I dont need excuses to discuss any thing I feel opinionated about; and I certainly do not need some piece of shit plasterer apprentice to tell me otherwise. In case you haven't seen from others posts, your likes and attitude here isn't wanted; GO AWAY.

and btw, a good discussion doesn't lead or need you to be in it. A good discussion also has opposition; if you cant understand or grasp that then I think YOU need to rethink every post you make and every discussion you turn into shit because you facelessly and carelessly post "grammer, spelling, and typo" errors as part of one's opinions that you attack. Furthermore, Whats the point to a discussion is everyone agree's with each other? The point of a discussion, IN MY OPINION, is to see out all opinions and take apart the plus's and minus' to each arguement. The instant you consider it a "win" or "lose" arguement then its turned to shit, like when you come into a thread! - Thu, 6 Dec 2007 4:51pm Edited: Thu, 6 Dec 2007 4:58pm

grow up devin, your just spewing out shit trying to get more of a rise. get a life. Just because Im in support of the olympics for the BENEFIT of our elite level atheletes(of which you have no idea what it takes to be and compete at that level; with the mental capacity you have). How is that an "outrageous argument that nobody has made yet"? I clearly said that we seem to forget about the other people that DO benefit from the olympics coming here. I dont know if I can make it more clear than that. Deal with it and move on.

It's funny that you should bring up logical fallacies devin. While JI may or may not be guilty of committing the straw man fallacy, I personally have my doubts, in every post you direct at JI, you are guilty of committing the ad hominum fallacy. It happens, let it go. If you don't like JI's position on this, or any other topic, fine. That's your right, but don't go spouting off at him over and over about it. If you don't have a concise, logical point to refute him with, then keep your yap shut otherwise you just look petty and stupid, not to mention immature. Authors note: this is not a personal attack against devin....oh wait....yeah, I think it actually might be. Though shit. LIVE WITH IT!

Miga -- a snowboarding sea-bear was inspired by 20Lbs of B.C's finest wheelchair bud. Miga, described as mischievous and red-eyed, is part sea-bear and part sado-masochistic; and when not absolutely fucking with peoples heads, can be found licking VANCOC head, John Furlong's scrotum...and other holy places...

Quatchi -- a shy and gentle Sasquatch with a long brown cock and blue balls, is meant to conjure the mystery and wonder associated with Canada's vast, vaginal wilderness. (Belinda Stonach once remarked that "I've been fucked by the likes of hockey players and politicians,... but you've never had a cock in your anus, until you've had Quatchi's big brown sasquatch cock up there!)
When Quatchi is not tapping ass, he can be found on the steps of city hall smoking that ol' Bob Marley and sniffing his fingers...

Sumi -- a dragon spirit, who flies with the wings of the taradactyl, is described as "a natural born piece of fucking shit, with a passion for bUrNiNaTinG the countryside and the peaseants too."

Mukmuk -- a Vancouver Island marmot was sidekicked from the team and was considered an honorary member of the mascot team after begging Quatchi not to make him go extinct by sticking his big brown sasquatch-ness up his marmot ass. - Fri, 7 Dec 2007 9:57pm

I don't know if I should laugh or facepalm.

"Miga -- a snowboarding sea-bear inspired by the First Nations' legends of the Pacific Northwest. Miga, described as mischievous and outgoing, is part sea-bear and part orca whale."

...and part dildo. Not only is it a half-sea-bear/half-orca-whale, but it's a SNOWBOARDING half-sea-bear/half-orca-whale. Probably has X-TREME attitude too, and drinks Mountain Dew.

"Quatchi -- a shy and gentle Sasquatch with a long brown beard and blue earmuffs meant to conjure the mystery and wonder associated with Canada's wilderness."

A big brown piece of shit with earmuffs. The only thing earmuffs "conjure" is the person who designed that anime piece of shit not listening to the voice of reason.

"Sumi -- an animal guardian spirit, who flies with the wings of the thunderbird, is described as "a natural born leader with a passion for protecting the environment."

Watch out heavy industry, Sumi is a natural born leader and has a fierce passion for environmental protection. Change your ways before it's too late!

"Mukmuk -- a Vancouver Island marmot sidekick considered an honorary member of the mascot team."

What an honor it must be for an inanimate character to be considered an honorary member of the mascot team.

I've decided to facepalm. The thought of someone actually getting paid to design this shit out of our tax dollars makes me cringe. - Sun, 9 Dec 2007 2:45pm
