SS If you were to take guitar lessons would you want to learn songs already written or learn theory and technique? - Thu, 10 Oct 2002 5:25pm
Anonymous both are important, already writen songs help you understand the theory and technique - Thu, 10 Oct 2002 5:31pm
SS Thanks for your response. I never learned cover songs. I studied
theory while picking apart songs. Now if I can get 19 more oppinions I will have an average for this area. - Thu, 10 Oct 2002 5:39pm
Anonymous written songs - Thu, 10 Oct 2002 5:41pm

best lessons I've ever had have been a combination of both. haha bet that doesnt help! - Thu, 10 Oct 2002 5:55pm
Anonymous theory and technique - but i think you'll find that the answers are going to be very dependent on each person's circumstances. for me, for example, i took theory and technique lessons years ago and since then have learnt songs and taught myself. now, i'd like to pick up lessons on theory and technique again. it could have just as easily happened the other way around though. - Thu, 10 Oct 2002 6:01pm

if you just teach theory your students will get bored and restless so you have to give em a spoonfull of sugar in the form of a song they want to learn. you'll pretty much have to teach both. if they learn the theory then they can decipher their own songs. my guitar teacher put it like this: you can give a man a fish and he'll be able to eat for a day, or you can teach a man how to fish and he'll never go hungry again.

pretty deep, eh? - Thu, 10 Oct 2002 8:18pm
virge is and idiot if you give a man a fish you FEED HIM FOR A DAY, if you teach a man to fish you FEED HIM FOR LIFE - Thu, 10 Oct 2002 11:05pm

loosely translated form the original chinese proverb - Fri, 11 Oct 2002 12:56am
arwet Why pay money to learn songs??
Also, theory is something most teachers don't
seem to know, and something you can read
in a book.
I say learn songs on your own, and learn
technique (much more difficult and important)
in lessons. - Fri, 11 Oct 2002 3:09pm
STBP I learned by playing along with my favorite records. It's a bit of a shortcut, and I think the fingering technique that evolved is now causing some wrist pain. But I still wouldn't pay some half-wit to impose his musical opinions on me. - Fri, 11 Oct 2002 3:28pm
SS My idea for giving lessons has always been like what Arwet stated. Jason and Verge brought up very good points.. - Fri, 11 Oct 2002 3:45pm
sleez-e you should contact Gerod Staaf. I took a few lessons from him when i began 3 months ago, he is very good, though i don't have his number anymore i lost it. james - Fri, 11 Oct 2002 9:05pm
