Today during my lunch break at work, I ambled over to Broad Street bound for Rising Star Bistro and Deli. The plan was to pick up a sausage roll or something to go with the gourmet can of Campbell's New England Clam Chowder I'd brought for lunch (note: you should probably also avoid any canned chowder). I got there and decided to spice things up by opting out of the standard sausage roll and getting a chicken roll and a veggie roll instead.

Back at work, I'm dippin' the veggie roll into the sickly lookin' white saucy soup I've just nuked up, and the roll tastes pretty good. I move onto the chicken roll, and that's where the trouble starts.

I take a bite of the seemingly normal roll, and think to myself, "Hmmm...that tasted slightly off..." Nevertheless, I decided to test fate with another bite and came to a definite conclusion: this roll was wack! So I cracked open the flaky pastry shell to reveal the roll's inner workings. And upon the grayish chicken inside, was bright green mold! And lots of it too! Yay!

I spit my mouthful out into my napkin, and resisted the natural reflex of airing one's belly. Unfortunately, there was no other food or drink to get the taste out of my mouth, so it had the chance to linger around for a while, which really made my day. I put on my coat and headed back to Rising Star, and not for seconds.

When I arrived there I threw the roll in it's bag up on the counter, and told the woman I'd just bought it and that she should have a look at it. She asked if there was a problem, and reiterated that she should inspect said roll herself. Upon further inspection, she concurred that there was indeed a fairly significant amount of mold, while another employee offered a third affirmative.

She did the right thing and gave me my money back for the roll, but not before offering me some free food! Wha! I just enjoyed a delectable serving of penicillin from your establishment, and you think that I might ever even consider ingesting more?

After work, I decided to get my Columbo on and do a little online investimagating. I found a nifty website where you can see the inspection reports for every restaurant, and found that Rising Star has had several infractions in the past, including one "Inadequate Cooling & Refrigerated Storage of Potentially Hazardous Food" that was deemed to be "Critical". Here's a link to the website with all the inspection reports:

So if you're thinking about heading to the Rising Star Bistro and Deli at 1320 Broad Street in Victoria, BC, perhaps you should give it a second thought. And stay away from the chowder too. - Wed, 7 Nov 2007 5:39pm

Man, throwing your food at the counter probably intimidates the hired help. Sure, it was mouldy. But it is extremely unlikely that you were talking to the owner. If I worked at 7-11 and someone came and bounced a bag of oreos off the counter and talked to me the way it sounds like you talked to her, I'd offer him the manager's business card to break his fall when he hit the sidewalk.

Sure it's fun to go in and pick on someone making $10 an hour to work in a dirty restaurant. But don't mistake that with being concerned about food safety. It sounds like it really made your day that you had an excuse to go back there and harass someone.

how could you even side with a restraunt that is oblivious to what they serve? Yeah its shitty to have to go back and complain to someone; but what about others that buy that same food and get sick as shit from it? Or possibly contract a serious illness from eating BAD meat? (in the words of mr. ramsey himself) " YOU CAN KILLLLLLLL SOMEONE!!!! WHAT ARE YOU DDOOOOOOOOOOOINNNNG??".
Regardless if your just making a minimum wage at some bakery; you should still be aware of the product your selling... moldy or not. DISGUSTING to even think someone defends moldy food or people that serve moldy foods. - Fri, 9 Nov 2007 1:48pm

I said that your case would be better served by bringing it up with someone who has a clue, rather than being blatantly disrespectful to some girl who in all probability didn't even make your food.

someone has to be accountable; regardless of wages(which is a silly way to justify taking your argument to "someone that cares"). The person that SERVES the food SHOULD be aware of whats going on, REGARDLESS of wages. Also, employee's(wage's aside) should at least take pride in what their doing; otherwise you'll end up where rising star is going(down the shitter in more ways than 1).
And btw, there is no such thing as rude when it comes to your health; and when someone puts that in jeopardy(ie, ROTTEN FOOD) then you should feel more than obliged to let them know. Unless you really dont care about your health or anyone elses that frequent the place.
Doing the 'nice guy' thing for this situation would result in more people getting sick and more rotten food being served. Nobody benefits. - Sat, 10 Nov 2007 3:26pm Edited: Sat, 10 Nov 2007 3:28pm

You're right, you're absolutely right. If you are served rotten food, do not complain to someone in a position to do something about it. You're not obligated to do so. You are however obligated to ream out the first person you see behind the counter. You have the right to throw whatever kind of tantrum you'd like, because someone didn't notice the mould that you also didn't notice. As you know, it is EXTREMELY common for near minimum wage staff to take such an interest in saving the restaurant's money that they'll intentionally serve expired food. In fact, there is an entire chapter in the foodsafe study guide entitled "Serving Rotten Meat to Customers is Good Idea and has No Consequences".

...Grow up, dude. If you really want to see the place closed, go buy yourself some rotten food and complain to VIHA. If you walk into ANY place with the attitude that "there is no such thing as rude" you're eventually going to get hurt. It is a poor way to conduct yourself. - Sat, 10 Nov 2007 11:16pm

I don't see any evidence of belligerence, nor evidence of "reaming out" the hired help in the original post other than telling them the food was bunk; I think you're creating a much more dramatic scenario in your head than was originally reported. I worked in restaurants in my ol' high school days, and as I recall minimum wage or no, it is the responsibility of the underlings to ensure food isn't, you know, growing shit upon sale. Going straight to the management is only going to wind up in clerks getting some true reamage from their boss. Though obviously the boss at this joint doesn't run a very tight ship, so maybe not--

Perhaps I'll clear up some of the wording used in my initial post. When I said that I threw the roll up on the counter, maybe I should have said "I flipped it up..." or "I casually tossed it up...." I did not spike this thing like a football.

Secondly, this wasn't a fifteen year old girl that I was dealing with, she was definitely over thirty and could quite possibly have been the owner, I don't know for certain. As for reaming, this never really happened, and I'm sure that she would say the same.

As for the "Grow up, dude" comment Devin, I don't really see how you could make any solid assumption of my maturity level based on the post above. Taking back moldy food to the place of purchase and getting your money back doesn't seem to be an act of immaturity to me..... but maybe you know more than me about what really went down at the Rising Star.

The fact is that the roll was old and should have been thrown out long ago, and the restaurant has had some prior instances of less-than great attentiveness to refrigeration and storage. Take the facts for what they are and come to your own decisions. - Sun, 11 Nov 2007 6:08pm

I dont want to see the place closed; that's just how I feel when my health is at threat. and by the way if you actually comprehended my post about "there is no such thing as rude when your health is at risk", then you'd realise that I have a certain level of tact; but when MY HEALTH IS AT RISK, I take nothing lightely. Im not saying that you have to go in and cause a huge scene; so much as LETTING SOMEONE KNOW, so that nobody else is in harms way.
And next time, dont tell me how to conduct myself. When clearly you still have some growing room, when you realise what my meaning is behind my post then you'll realise how foolish you look ;) - Sun, 11 Nov 2007 10:12pm

where did I ever say in my post that I would cause a huge scene? or yell and harass someone? I simply said:
"Regardless if your just making a minimum wage at some bakery; you should still be aware of the product your selling... moldy or not. DISGUSTING to even think someone defends moldy food or people that serve moldy foods"

and

"And btw, there is no such thing as rude when it comes to your health; and when someone puts that in jeopardy(ie, ROTTEN FOOD) then you should feel more than obliged to let them know."

so how am I back peddling when your the one that put the words right in my mouth mr. plastering apprentice? And if you even the slightest bit of reading/comprehension skills you will have noted that not one of my posts were stating the place should be closed. And not once have I "back peddled" my opinion. Allz I simply said in regards to you; is that you shouldn't take things so lightly ESPECIALLY if you dont even work in that industry and know what its like.
So before you go off thinking your defending someone from "harassment" because THEY SERVE MOLDY FOOD(are you an idiot?) think again, cuz it IS against the law and against FOOD SAFE reg.
(just for you trev. i carry on)

"If I worked at 7-11 and someone came and bounced a bag of oreos off the counter and talked to me the way it sounds like you talked to her, I'd offer him the manager's business card to break his fall when he hit the sidewalk."

/not only would you owe him at least a new bag of oreo's but you've just assaulted someone in this hypothetical situation. And in that post you said "talked to me the way it SOUNDS like you talked to her..." So your assuming now that a huge cruffufle started because of this roll; when He himself simply said: "When I arrived there I threw the roll in it's bag up on the counter, and told the woman I'd just bought it and that she should have a look at it. She asked if there was a problem, and reiterated that she should inspect said roll herself. Upon further inspection, she concurred that there was indeed a fairly significant amount of mold, while another employee offered a third affirmative"
so wheres the harassment or beligerance there? I dont detect any harsh feelings or resentment towards that establishment?

I have no comments or opinions on the current situation at Rising Star nor am I associated with them, but I just felt like I should let everyone know that as of November 16 new ownership will be taking over Rising Star.

These are new people & even if they keep the name "Rising Star" they should be treated like a new establishment.

Everyone has had a bad experience at some restaurant somewhere & your opinions are valid. BUT - This will be a completely different ownership & staff. It is not their fault that this has happened.

The only reason why I felt the need to post this is because I wouldn't want to see a new business fail or get a bad rep because of someone else’s wrong doing. - Thu, 15 Nov 2007 3:18pm

Okay, after laughing my ass off reading all the entertaining banter, I am now gonna throw some of my opinion in there.

First of all, I know the owners, (that is, if they are still the owners, but pretty sure. It's been a while)
Allysa and Spence (ring any bells to anyone) were a huge part of the local scene, music, motorbikes and otherwise. Allysa poured her heart out (I can hear the shit talk now) into that place, and for the most part of a few years now, especially in the begining 2 years, that place has had nothing but rave reviews, excellent food and local art sales, HOMEMADE delish-niss for all, which is a fuck of alot more than I can say for places we and I probably eat at on a daily basis.
Just because you didnt see the rat feces on your food in storage, or anything else that can happen anywhere, doesnt mean it isnt there...YOU HAVE ALL PROBABLY EATEN WORMS IN YER SALAD AND DONT KNOW IT!

Those reports, as they publish them in Monday also, when inspection time has come and gone, shock the shit out of you, from shitholes to the most upscale...but have you ever seen the lists?! You might read of an infraction somewhere, which is worded very disturbingly professional, and unhealty, but it was as simple as the mayo being 1 degree warmer than it should have been. Whatev, Im not here to argue but...

It probably was Allysa that served you, otherwise they would have called her over, as she works in there, always has, or if it was a "min wager", they would have brought her over, or asked what they can do to fix prob.

At least they gave your money back, where most would stop there...but NO, they offer you free shit, and you could have taken free coffee for a month, hell...

At least they tried more than most would, and felt sincerely sorry. But you still have to come on livevic and bash the fuck out, give the name and address no less...

Your personality is mold.

Im going for a sausage tomorrow morn, just cause I have faith, and people make mistakes. I will also be sure to bring this thread to their attention, and see if they care to comment further.

So it is the responsibility of the person with the lowest position in a company to make sure that everyone above them has done their job correctly? I mean, sure, if they notice problems they should feel obligated to correct them... but are they responsible for examining every product? The final and most trivial link in the chain supervises the previous links to make sure they've done their job correctly? Also, it's pretty disgustingly idealistic to think that untrained people must only take jobs doling out products they believe in completely.

your right its not their responsibilty to make sure the people above them are doing their job. But if those people above them aren't doing their job and sending out food for the front staff(that's moldy) then its the front staff's problem then too; someone HAS to be accountable even if the front staff didn't cook it; they served it, which is like comparing seeing a murder and doing nothing to stop it(i know its an extreme case) YOU are accountable because YOU let it happen. Think of it that way and you'll see my point of view; whether you agree or not, that's up to you.

In the situation described, I still maintain that it is NOT NECESSARILY the fault of the server. It would be their fault if they knew it was left out for too long and had gone bad. But who knows... Ask to speak with the manager if there's a problem like that. Be as big an asshole as you feel the situation calls for. It's their business and they expect to deal with that shit. Sixteen year old boys and girls will just become scared of customer service jobs, and then they won't be able pay for the schooling that would help them get better jobs. It's a catch 22, and those boys and girls will end up homeless and addicted to dope. And then they'll walk up and down Broad street all day asking me for cigarettes and money and calling me an asshole when I don't give them any. And all I'm usually trying to do is cross the street from where I live to get some god damn oat delights from the rising star bakery. FUCK! Who agrees?

The most difficult customer service job I ever had was as a clerk in an electronics store. People would always come back and get pissed off with me because something didn't work... As if I could see through the cheap plastic casing that resistor 34 and capacitor 42 weren't working. A woman once told me I was a bad person for selling her a broken alarm clock. I felt it was uncalled for. All I'm saying is that clerks and counter staff often have more annoying shit to deal with on a saturday afternoon than a lot of people do all week. That's why I don't waste their time by searching for nickels and dimes in my pockets, and that's why right now my pockets are full of nickels and dimes. Oh well. - Fri, 16 Nov 2007 7:22pm

Jesus tapdancing Christ, this really took on a life of it's own.........like mold.

Anyways KK, it's nice that they support the 'scene' and like motorbikes, cause that's really neat and stuff, but that doesn't really affect the quality of the food that they serve, which should be the bottom-line for any sort of food service or restaurant.

I had gone to Rising Star quite a few times before this happened, they were one of my fave spots to pick up a quick bite. However, it only takes one bad experience to make me want to boycott, and tell others about my bad experience as well. Such is the way of word of mouth.

The new ownership might be enough to coerce me to return, however it I don't think I'll get a roll......

I worked at Murchie's for 3 1/2 years and served hundreds of sausage rolls in that time. Did I ever break one open and check for mold? No. Was it my responsibility to check? Maybe. What we had there was an expiry date on all baked goods. Every couple of days the kitchen staff would come up and take the old ones away and replace them with new ones. You could never see mold in a sausage roll unless you broke it open to check for mold, and you would never suspect mold in your sausage roll unless you had broken it open. Round and round we go. My point- it is always somebody's responsibility to keep stock fresh and that person is to blame for the Rising Star incident. The person at the front counter would not necessarily know the roll was bad. Also, with low pay comes low responsibility. I guarantee the owners and bakers are making more than the front end staff so let it be their responsibility to ensure fresh food. Or pay the front end staff enough so they give a shit. - Sun, 18 Nov 2007 4:41pm

"What we had there was an expiry date on all baked goods."
"I guarantee the owners and bakers are making more than the front end staff so let it be their responsibility to ensure fresh food. Or pay the front end staff enough so they give a shit"

So what IF rising star didn't have an expiry date on their baked goods? And it WAS the responsibility of the front staff to ENSURE that these "baked goods" were stocked up and fresh? You guys miss the point of accountibility; Has anyone here owned their own business and knows what its like to have that go down the tubes because you hired someone that couldn't care less about your establishment and the simple request you made in your job description was to MAKE SURE FOOD IS FRESH(especially working in the hospitality industry). Expiry dates are, of course, a good idea and should be manditory; that way in this case it would be the server/front staff's fault because there is a date there that they can physically see and if its over that date; and they are negligent enough to just leave it cuz they aren't getting paid enuff to care, then I believe that someone is accountable.
And in this case of rising star I would've gone to the manager in charge or the person in charge at THAT time and "be as big of an asshole as the situation calls for".
This also brings me to the topic of wages and labor; what people expect to do for what they earn. I believe you apply for a job; regardless of pay, the responsibility they give you, YOU should feel more than obligated to fufill the duties given to you. From what I've read in this post and heard from word of mouth; it seems that nobody believes in sweating for every dollar they earn because if they dont get paid enough; its not worth their time. Well if you apply for a job; chances are your gunna have to get your hands dirty every now and again and not just expect a pay cheque.

ps, wharf side eatery is the pits for fine dining. And plus, a server there ripped my grandmother off for 5000$ on her visa card(thankfully the payment was cancelled and tracked). Not a very stand-up establishment. Thus; they deserve every knock they get. - Mon, 19 Nov 2007 11:18am

ok so we've established that... my original point was that when an establishment(such as a restraunt/diner/cafe/bakery) serves you moldy/bad/old/disgusting food you should feel more than obliged to tell someone; and that someone should feel more than obligated to get to the bottom of the problem... be it a manager or a simple front end staff. That's the most ridiculous shit you've ever said. And you've had some good ones.

Your point was that you have the right to be rude, and you don't. Nobody was arguing that you should let somebody know - nobody said you shouldn't, did they?

And unless you're Spongebob fucking Squarepants, lack of pride in your employer isn't going to make you hate your life! If you want to be an asshole, go ahead! But don't think for a second that being an asshole to any service industry employee is your right, because it doesn't contribute anything whatsoever to resolving whatever the issue is. It is solely for YOUR pleasure, you do it because it makes YOU feel better. - Tue, 20 Nov 2007 10:19pm

1. If you look at the last few inspections of Rising Star Bistro you will notice that it has a pretty good record.
2. Perhaps these sausage rolls came from a larger supplier (lekker/north Doug etc) and wasn't in fact made by Rising Star Bistro (i don't know the answer) in which case the mold could have occurred prior to its arrival at the bistro.
3. If you plan on checking that VIHA website prior to eating out anywhere be prepared to stop eating out. Nearly everyone has had a problem sometime.

again devin... read my posts more carefully. Maybe in your next reading comprehension course might delve into reading and a bit of a thought process before you spew.
Not once did I ever say it was OK to be an asshole to anyone, but if you think I did; then that's your own little world. All I've been pressing is that people should be accountable for their actions in a place of business. Again, thank god you dont own your own.
"But don't think for a second that being an asshole to any service industry employee is your right,"
/your right, being an asshole gets you nowhere; but if(not necissarily this situation; so dont get those panties in a knot) nobody feels compelled(manager aside)_to further investigate the problem, then a stronger message should be sent(dont interprit that as being a fucking asshole you moron).
But what do I know? Im no plasterer. Just some average joe making money.
As for hating life if you dont have some sort of passion to where u work; Well obevously you dont know what its like to work a shitty job.
So before you go attacking me about how much of an "asshole" "moron" "naive" person I am; just remember your opinion wont change mine... Own and run your own business then we can talk ;)

on a side note, I went to the rising star bakery and it seemed fine to me, though I personally did not go in to get stuff(a friend of mine did); im not a picky person but like I said above and will continue to say that when someone puts your health at risk its a serious matter and should be attended to, to the fullest capasity of the person working or managing the establishment.(ps, its ok if you have to read it twice to get the full concept devin ;)) - Wed, 21 Nov 2007 2:38pm Edited: Wed, 21 Nov 2007 2:41pm

"And in this case of rising star I would've gone to the manager in charge or the person in charge at THAT time and "be as big of an asshole as the situation calls for"."

"And btw, there is no such thing as rude when it comes to your health"

And seriously dude, if you insist on attacking my language skills you should do a little better than this:

"As for hating life if you dont have some sort of passion to where u work; Well obevously you dont know what its like to work a shitty job."

Also, when quoting people as having called you names (ie moron) please make sure that they've called you names, or eventually someone will file a libel suit. It was actually you calling me a moron. And like I said, go walk into any lawyers office and try to get a libel suit going on what's happened in this thread. You'll be laughed out of the building. You've not even been remotely damaged (defamed), so there's no libel. It's easy to hit websters, or any other online dictionary, to get a definition, it's another to actually understand the viability of ones own statements.

you do realise that half the shit you qouted me on I was using those words in sarcastic-means? When one quotes "be as big an asshole as the situation calls for"; means that this situation doesn't necissarily lend itself to being a total asshole. Which YOU'VE taken out of context; or mis-comprehended. You feel so obligated to point fingers at people yet get all defensive and "troll-like" when people call you out on it. Im sorry you feel so angry about the situation devin, but in all seriousness you dont know what its like to own a business and you dont know what its like, obveously, to be accountable for your actions.
