post biggest let-downs of the year:

Drudkh - Estrangement

this should have been better
should have had more songs than 4
drumming and solos at least as good as the last album instead of WAY worse

Blut Aus Nord - Odinist

their use of drum machines worked great on "fathers of the icy age" and sort of worked on "works which transform god"...but not here. I was expecting esoteria, beauty and mindfuckery...but didn't get much.

Goat Semen - Live in Lima

horrible production
waste of money - Tue, 6 Nov 2007 9:55pm

I'll second that Nile.

Only thing I can think of is that third song off Jesu's "Lifeline" EP with Jarboe. Fuck that song fucking sucks. Shut up Jarboe. - Wed, 7 Nov 2007 2:42am

Disappointing:
Behemoth - The Apostasy
Vital Remains - Icons of Evil
Behold... the Arctopus - Skullgrid
Pelican - City of Echoes
Scarve - The Undercurrent
Jesu - Lifeline
Municipal Waste - The Art of Partying

Flat out bad:
Pain of Salvation - Scarsick
Kamelot - Ghost Opera
Jesu - Pale Sketches
Mayhem - Ordo Ab Chao
The End - Elementary
Dimmu Borgir - In Sorte Diaboli (of course) - Wed, 7 Nov 2007 12:43pm

Drawn & Quartered - Merciless Hammer Of Lucifer

Let me start by saying this album is actually quite awesome. As a stand alone release it is a worthy addition to any death metal fans collection. However I only posted it because it is a step down from their last effort, Hail Infernal Darkness. I found this quite dissapointing as D&Q had this streak of continually releasing albums that were better than the last.

Haven't heard the new Behemoth all the way thru but I thought the new Nile was pretty good, despite a more traditional tech death sound.

wait a minute shawn...nile was good in the first place? when the fuck did this happen?

you know what didn't disappoint? the new terror...because i wasn't expecting anything but the same old garbage they've been trying to shove down people's throats for the past five years.

yeah, yeah, i get it man...stage dives...fucking stage dives. - Wed, 7 Nov 2007 8:49pm

I didn't like the Apostasy at first either. After listening to it for a while though it has became my favorite album of this year. Maybe give it a chance? - Thu, 8 Nov 2007 12:02am

scott vogel shouts the same fucking things at every terror show i've ever been to:

"STAGE DIVES!! I NEED (insert random number here) STAGE DIVES!!!"

"MAXIMUM FUCKING OUTPUT!!"

"ACTIVATE THE DANCE FLOOR!!!"

every fucking time. only time this has been cool is when it started a riot at the whiskey a go go. that's probably the only show i've every been to where i hated 75% of the bands, and still had a great time. - Thu, 8 Nov 2007 1:02am Edited: Thu, 8 Nov 2007 1:02am

It might piss people off to say this so soon after Viteks death but a month or two ago I bought the new decapitated, listened to it once and haven't bothered listening to it again since then. The guitars and vocals just really seemed lazy, boring and unimaginative. - Thu, 8 Nov 2007 8:19am

"Mayhem - Ordo Ab Chao"

woah woah woah ... wrong thread!!!

You know from what I've heard, yeah it's more interesting than Mayhem is usually, but it still will never ever make me care about this band ever. - Thu, 8 Nov 2007 8:43am

Granted I haven't listened to that album in several months, but it hit me as sounding like a really embarassing attempt at returning to relevancy by going "experimental" again. Mayhem should really just change their name at the very least, it would make things better for everyone. - Thu, 8 Nov 2007 9:54am

Have you listened to De Mysteriis? - Fri, 9 Nov 2007 2:09am

No, I'm sure he made that statement without having heard their most acclaimed album. - Fri, 9 Nov 2007 2:21am

Yeah I've heard De Mysteriis. I think where Mayhem loses me is in the total arrogance and idiocy of the band members themselves trying to be SO extreme and so whatever it just totally falls flat on it's face for me. - Fri, 9 Nov 2007 5:01pm

'Amorphis - Silent Waters'

I got so excited when I heard it was a continuation of what they did with 'tales from the thousand lakes', which is one of my favorite albums of all time. No, it is nothing at all like it. What a let down. - Fri, 16 Nov 2007 1:08am

Disappointments:

Minsk - The Ritual Fires of Abandonment
....what fucking happened here...where did the riffs go???

Drudkh - Estrangement (and might as well throw Anti-Urban on there as well)
...would have liked these a whole lot more if they were released by a different band....as is they are a massive step down.

Witchcraft - The Alchemist
...too much Zeppelin

None of these are horrible or anything (actually I enjoy all of them to an extent)...I've just heard so much better from each band. - Wed, 19 Dec 2007 1:02pm

yes.......definitely Anti-Urban....

...the instrumental track manages to meander it's way all of nowhere....and I swear the riff is a modified (maybe blandified is a more apt descriptor) version of a riff on a older release....

...the other song starts out with a bit more promise...but holy fuck are the drums annoying....the vocals are sub-par...and the song basically leaves me with the impression that it would be a throw-away song off of any release besides Estrangement (or maybe a proto-track?)...

...overall I find this release to be quite sterile and lifeless...which is kinda ironic given the name of the release...in fact, I find the quality of Estrangement to be of a higher caliber than this release...

...one jerks meaningless opinion... - Fri, 21 Dec 2007 12:25pm

I'm going to bump this old thread to discuss that "Phantom Limb" by Pig Destroyer is maybe the weakest material of theirs. By no means do I hate it at all, but it just was too "metal" and lacked ANY narrative in the JR Hayes department which always made me stoked on albums like Prowler and Terrifyer. - Fri, 25 Jan 2008 2:26am
