I'm looking at organizing a really killer all ages rock show with 4 or 5 bands, including my own, The Black Orchid Rebellion. B.O.R. and I are willing to do the groundwork in terms of organization, promotion, and advertising, but instead of putting up all of the money and potentially losing our shirts, I want to find around 4 other bands who can share the up-front costs with B.O.R. and also reap the profits in a big way.

I know that "pay to play" can be lame, but in this case you are not paying for the right to play at my venue, you are investing in something that has all the potential to give back several fold.

So here is the deal, as I see it: I will scout out all of the details and put together a flat cost for each band that will be paid up-front (B.O.R. will also be paying this cost - so nobody is paying US, we are all simply pooling our resources to finance the show).

Each band will get to play up to around a 45 minute set, and I want to make this a really killer show so that people will want to come back again for more shows in the future. As such, I'm not skimping on certain things, and the cost will include venue rental, probably at the Fernwood Community Centre, plus:

- Top-knotch, professional sound (and potentially lighting, if everyone wants to pay around $40-50 extra) and a professional sound engineer from the Audio Garage for the entire show, including setup, tear down, and festival-style sound check for each band.

- A professional live recording of your entire set, professionally edited in-studio after the show. I'll include a CD copy for each band member that you can duplicate and sell or use for Myspace and Promotion purposes.

- A to-be-determined concession setup where bottled water and other refreshments can be sold (for extra profit).

- As much advertising, postering, and promotion as we can muster.

- Security, as needed.

I'm a big believe in bands getting their FAIR share of the profits, and by fair I mean proportionate to the amount of money they generate. To this end, each band will be given as many advance tickets to sell as possible without exceeding fire codes and venue capacity limits, etc. I'm thinking at least 40 tickets per band. I would set ticket price around $10 (seems pretty fair for a 5 band show), and then the rest is up to each band to bring in a crowd -- whatever you sell, you keep. You could potentially bring in $400 or more if each member of each band (assuming a 4-piece band) can sell 10 tickets - not that difficult!

Any other money we bring in (i.e. tickets at the door, concession profits, etc) will be split fairly between the bands. Current estimate puts the individual cost at around $200 per band, so potentially you could come away with $200 or more profit, and worse come to worst nobody would be out of pocket more than $50 (and that's if ZERO tickets are sold).

Anyway, that is my plan - style wise I'm looking for solid alternative rock bands, preferably in a slightly older age range to avoid as much teenage angsty bull-crap (the kind of thing that gets shows banned from venues). I'm not really interested in sloppy punk, hardcore-screamo-thrash, and/or anarchist whatever music. No disrespect to all of the talented musicians playing this stuff around town, it's just not what I'm interested in doing.

Email me at [email protected] or respond here if you're interested and/or if you have any ideas about ways to do this that I haven't thought of.

Cheers! - Mon, 30 Jul 2007 9:40pm

Yo BOY!!!

RKO may just be down with this option... I will talk to the band and see what we think.

We might even be a four piece by then...

Cool, man -- would be awesome to finally share a stage with you guys! Definately get a bass player - we rock! I'm hoping that Burn the Blindfold will be in as well. Not sure when this will happen (dependent upon finding the right bands and also venue availability) .. I am thinking that Fernwood Community Centre may not actually be large enough though as they have a capacity of 167, which doesn't really allow for each band to bring in 40 people each, which would be awesome if we could do. Any other ideas for places we could rent with large capacity? I thought Little Fernwood could do up to 200-250 people for some reason.. - Tue, 31 Jul 2007 10:14am

Another option I've just looked into is Little Fernwood - it actually has a 60-70 person capacity so it would be a smaller scale show, say 3 bands, and would include sound, lighting, etc for a lower cost (probably around $150 per band) and each band could potentially make around $100 or maybe a little more. Might be better to go that way for a pilot project, but then again there is something to be said for "go big or go home" eh? - Tue, 31 Jul 2007 10:32am

Just looking at some more venues in town and I think the best so far is actually Centenniel United Church's hall - 300 person capacity at around $200 for a 6 hour show, plus they have a good sound system. Only things we'd need to worry about is a good sound guy (probably get the same guy from Audio Garage but without all of the equipment brought in) and possibly some stage lights.

If we can actually bring in 300 people we could do very well with that setup. - Tue, 31 Jul 2007 11:56am

Hey Saint... Sounds like you got it going on. You guys have a good sound. Check out my MySpace and see if you think we fit the bill.
I like the idea of going big, but you probably need some kind of headliner for that. I might be able to help you with that depending onthe details. Either way, my band would love to play.

Cheers.... Marcel

Hey Bass Maniac - that's funny I was actually listening to your myspace stuff earlier today and thought it sounded like a pretty solid fit with what I'm trying to do. I'm thinking I may scale it down a little in terms of some of the cost - current plan is to rent the Centenniel United Church hall, which is big enough for 300 should we actually be able to get that many, is the same price to rent as Fernwood, and has a sound system included in the deal. I'd still be hiring a professional sound engineer (who is also going to assess the system there to make sure it is up to snuff or see what needs to be augmented) and also pay for some lights and what-not.

Anyway, it ends up costing a hell of a lot less, and we have the potential to bring in twice as many people as Fernwood, which only does around 150 or so. Even if each band could only sell 20 tickets each we'd still be making a profit of about double the cost.

Anyway, once I get into the venue to see what the system looks like I will have a better idea of the final expenses and then we can go from there. Would be happy to have you guys in the lineup!

Oh yes - by the way, did I mention it will be on a weekend?? I'd say that ups the ante quite a bit too.. - Wed, 1 Aug 2007 10:53pm Edited: Wed, 1 Aug 2007 10:56pm

Ideas, yeah.. current plan is to try for sometime mid-October .. it all depends on when I get a full roster of bands who want to participate .. I could probably organize it sooner than that, but I don't want to rush it and make mistakes.. it's my pilot project in terms of organizing shows is concerned, so I want to do it up right to make sure that I have a bunch of good bands (even if they aren't huge names - the goal here is to MAKE huge names) that play good music and put on a good show.

I'd like to make it possible for everyone to make a decent amount of money as well (bands need money) and to use money from this show to help finance the next one.. as well as getting the word out that these shows are a good thing for people to come back to.. - Thu, 2 Aug 2007 8:04am

You know the old saying - 'Nothing ventured, nothing gained' .. it's my first time planning a show, so it may well be a bit of a gong show, but then again, it might not. Either way, gotta start somewhere, right? :) - Sat, 4 Aug 2007 11:06am

At this point it would likely be mid-October sometime, depending on band schedules, etc.

I'm still trying to find the best solution in terms of a venue and sound.. there are a few venues that have sound systems, but they aren't necessarily great systems, and I'd like to keep expenses down as much as possible. If I knew we were going to sell 100+ tickets I would just go with the professional sound guy, etc, but he isn't cheap if he's hauling in all the gear. - Mon, 6 Aug 2007 11:13am
