Just listening to it, wow if the Smashing Pumpkins were THIS good years ago, I would of liked the band more (of course, I was always a HUGE fan of the Zero EP (I loved the Pastichio Medley) and Pisces Iscariot (I love there B-Sides)). According to CDNow.com: Inside the buzzing hive of Smashing Pumpkins' guitars is clearly where bandleader Billy Corgan feels most comfortable. So, after a seven-year hiatus for the short-lived group Swan and his surprisingly sunny 2005 solo album, Corgan has revived the Pumpkins in all the six-string-spattered shades of emotional gray that made them one of the greatest bands of the alt-rock era. Longtime drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, along with famed boardsmiths Roy Thomas Baker and Terry Date as well as Corgan himself coproduced. Chamberlin also supports mountainous layers of guitar with his fiercest playing. California musicians Ginger Reyes (bass) and Jeff Schroeder (guitar) complete a version of the band dedicated to early bare-knuckled form, with a few exceptions: Corgan's grown into a more powerful wordsmith and his lengthy guitar solo explorations of yore are replaced with a trim, barbed textural approach that's ultimately more vicious. That is, until the centerpiece "United States" stretches into an epic punk-metal-informed sibling of Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun," with Corgan's strings singing like explosions and twisting metal as he warbles about revolution. Much of this album conjures literal and sonic visions of apocalypse, but there's grace, too, in the blithe grind of the hopeful "That's the Way (My Love Is)" and the melodic "Neverlost." Overall, Corgan's captivating effort to mine both the spirit of these turbulent times and the soul of his defining band is a smashing success. --Ted Drozdowski.

Songs I really like are: Tarantula (I love how fun that song is), 7 Shades of Black and the title track Doomsday Clock, though I like all the songs on the album. I give it a thumbs up! - Sun, 1 Jul 2007 1:45pm Edited: Sun, 1 Jul 2007 1:56pm

as far as radio singles are concerned, "Tarantula" has to be one of the best of the past little while. I love firing that track up!

I grew up on the Pumpkins so I am very jazzed on this new disc. - Thu, 5 Jul 2007 6:22pm

AHH I wish I worked today.. I haven't heard this album yet, only "Tarantula". I REALLY REALLY want to see the Smashing Pumpkins in Vancouver, but the tickets are will-call and I don't have a credit card cuz I'm lame-o. Anyone who does want to go with me? heh... I really don't want to miss this! If they play "Zero" I'll probably die! AHH.

Yeah, like, someone go see the SP's avec moi... - Tue, 10 Jul 2007 11:30pm

Now it's out, I should talk to my friends at Turntable and get the album on vinyl. For those curious, there were 3 bonus tracks: Stellar, Zeitgeist and Death From Above. The bonus tracks I didn't like, though. - Fri, 13 Jul 2007 9:52am

Haven't sat down with it and given it a proper listen front-to-back, but I've listened to it while driving in the car for the past week and it's exceeded my expectations.
I consider myself a huge Pumpkins fan, and have designated Siamese Dream as The Best Album Ever Recorded. Every album after that wasn't quite as good as its predecessor, and Machina was just an awful mess. Zeitgeist is the album Machina SHOULD have been. Fans such as myself were tricked into believing that Machina was a "return-to-form", but I consider the majority of Zeitgeist to be exactly that. The guitars are huge, the solos are huge, Jimmy's drumming is huge. What disappoints me most are the softer songs - they sound too Machina & Adore for my liking. The bonus track is a nice change, as it features mostly Billy & his acoustic.
I feel like I'm 12 years old again and just learning guitar. I want to pop in Zeitgeist into my CD player, sit down with my guitar, and not press stop until I've learned all the guitar parts through and through.

I give it an inital rating of 7.5/10 - Sun, 15 Jul 2007 7:07pm

Amen, sister. That is 'top ten of all time' material fer sure.

This new one, not so much. Oh well, it's better than 99% of the other crap on the Zone. - Wed, 18 Jul 2007 6:11pm
