I think they mean well.
Although originally an American organization, this group is Canadian.
The head of the Vancouver chapter lost his son a few years back in one of those skytrain station murders.

They do look kind of gay, maybe they could update their uniforms that look like they were made in 1984, but I don't see any problems with what they are trying to do in the downtown core. If they are out there trying to spread the word to addcits that there is a way to get clean, find some help, and live a life wothout the use of drugs, then thats great.
To anyone that is out there contributing to the problems on the streets rather than finding a way to help, take a look in the mirror before you go critisizing the good work done by these people in bad red fashion. - Mon, 21 May 2007 2:55pm

they may look stupid and harmless, but in many cities these fuckers have caused a lot of violence and repression just like the cops... they are not in the streets to spread the word about getting help with addictions either, often their known for kicking the shit out of drug addicts, some times even pot dealers, as well as any one looking homeless, and in some areas even punks, hippies, and kids into hip hop... In vancouver they have threatened the Anti Poverty Comity, and in calgary they have attacked food not bombs servings. The media is usually on their side, also the cops often are, even though officially they can not be. basically they are vigilantes that uphold the laws through force where the cops can't, even if the laws make no sense...
I have even heard reports of them breaking water pipes on stores in calgary that sell marijuana stuff (pipes, t shirts, papers) or allegedly are connected to drug dealing. - Mon, 21 May 2007 3:36pm

this is fucking stupid.

anyone want to organize a group of people to protest against these guys? Make it very public and advertise for a while..see how many victoria residents would come out? I doubt a lot of people agree with this shit.

I feel like volunteering for their crew and then walking aroun ddowntown seig heiling. maybe get a grouop of people together, buy a bunhc of stupid barrets and red jackets and do just that. I wonder if they could resist not attacking us?

That would be perfect.

seirously though..this is fucked...but as that article says, they're only here to check things out and there isn't a "Chapter" here at the moment.. so there you go.. - Mon, 21 May 2007 6:08pm Edited: Mon, 21 May 2007 6:23pm

who here remembers when all the businesses downtown started hiring private security goons to patrol in front of the stores.. McDonalds had the worst ones that hospitalized a few guys.. Then there were the ones in front of the Yates Douglas corner and they were so retarded if you were were waiting for a bus they'd try and shoo you along if you didnt look right.. Alot of people told them to fuck off and they'd grab you and try and push people down the street... in front of the next businesses down,, who then hired THEIR own guys... etc.

Ahh yah back in the day when pot and acid dealers ruled the streets,, they pushed them all out and let in the real psychos instead! - Tue, 22 May 2007 10:28am

hey, I don't really see a problem with it, but I only briefly read the article, I guess if your not doing anything wrong then you have nothing to worry about right!.....I don't quite understand it but I am a mom so the safer the streets the better for me!.....you have to admit Johnson and Douglas is an armpit ...If I need to walk there i'm shoulder checking ect... some chick got all up in my face one day cause she thought I was walking around her corner too often when really I only walked by once.....If she wasn't a total sick meth head with open wounds on her face I would have probably kick her in the head....I hate feeling threatened in my own fucking city.....I should be able to shop downtown in the daylight and not fear for my safety....had I had a bottle of mace or a guy in a red hat.......I maybe would not have been so scared!...who knows just my opinion.....but I guess if more money was spent on trying to clean the drug addicts of thier filthy habbits then the streets would be cleaner!...I know those people are someones son or daughter....so......no offence to anyone..... - Tue, 22 May 2007 7:33pm

the problem is they don't make the streets safer, the make them more right wing and business friendly, often by violently kicking the shit out of any one that looks poor.
they increase violence, and real lawlessness.
and they marginalize people, they also often try and stop the people that are actually working to create real change, people like rev al, might be the type they would harass. - Thu, 24 May 2007 6:45pm

"I guess if your not doing anything wrong then you have nothing to worry about right!."

The problem is that their idea of doing something "wrong" and most of our idea of doing something wrong is quite different. I see somebody sitting on the street sketched out on drugs as a person who's doing their best, but can use some help. They see them as a problem to be fixed, or a threat to be put down. I read a lot of fear in the Guardian Angels. The way to deal with homeless people, particularly the drug-addicted or mentally ill ones, is to love them more, like Reverend Al, not to fear them more.

That which we resist persists. The more we "fight" drug addiction, the worse it gets. Harm reduction, ondition-free housing and counseling, those are the ways to make a positive difference. - Fri, 25 May 2007 11:19am
