| denver User Info... | Human rights there do suck, child labour isn't good. But unfortunately a lot of Chinese feed their families and are dependent on the meagre wages they earn. I don't claim to know what's best for China but a lot of left-wing, human rights activists, including a UVIC professor, have said that boycotting child labour/slave labour is not the best way to help these people. Having a crap job is better than no job. If you really want to help there are organizations that broker better wages/working conditions etc. for workers there. China is ONE amoung MANY countries that allow Child Labour, India, Tibet, Pakistan...many more. Child labour has existed for centuries and even existed in North America (of course not the same brutal profit driven type) but existed none the less. The arguement that boycotting child labour will ruin these peoples lifestyles is nothing short of cheap political drivel. These countries are in poverty and Western nations are taking FULL advantage of that...I don't care how you paint it...put all the PR on it you want, candy coat it and say that its ok for a child to be chained (LITERALLY) to a carpet jig and beaten because it creates some kind of economic gain for the country however small in scale... Put simply these children are often working 20 hour days, are fed only enough to exist and are not allowed to see thier families...and are paid the equivilant of maybe, MAYBE 2 dollars a day. These are not exaggerations and to sit here and justify a 5 or 6 year old working in such conditions because the Western Governments are in reality too complacent to do anything about it and would much rather profit from international partnerships is APPAULING. If you lived in these countries would you want your child working in such conditions? I don't think it is the consumer's responsibility to not shop at walmart or whatever..I think the responsibility should sit on the shoulders of our government. No matter what the average joe hears, he'll still go to walmart and buy the lawnchair for cheaper than canadian tire or where ever...But if the Canadian Government decided to require franchise's to pass certain requirements..it wouldn't matter what the hell average joe thought cause it would already be a rule. Let's face it..most of us are just mindless drones doing 9-5 anyways..its true. That's why our government is fucking bullshit. They are the ones that are getting paid to make such decisions, not us. This country needs politicians who care enough to make real changes that aren't disorganized hippies (green party) who couldn't balance their own chequebooks let alone a budjet. | Jl User Info... | from being in Hong Kong for the past week, id have to say that life isn't as bad as you hippies would like to think. People are happy, gracious, helpful, and overwhelmingly polite. Sure I have the luxery of staying in a hotel, but i've been through a couple fishing villages and have seem what rural life could be like(tho not having experienced it I cant comment whether i could handle it lol and im pretty sure i cant). I havent seen one homeless person on the streets i've strolled through, which is about the length of Nathan Rd. and about a 5 km radius around my hotel (nathan and gascoine). I realise that people might not live in the best of conditions but for a city that has the population of canada crammed into a space smaller than california, life is pretty good. People care about each other here; unlike some other countries i've been to or live in. I find the major difference between the hospitality and well being of people here and over back home; is that people here do things for others and dont expect any recognition or return, where as in north america you couldn't get by without someone hittin' you up for something they did for you in the past. So for those who think people are miserable and unhealthy here, maybe you should actually take a trip and see what its like. I know some of you have been around asia im sure, and are probly scowling at your moniters at my comments; but that's just what i've seen and experienced. | Mean Mike User Info... | Bottom line is if you spend $100 at Walmart on small assorted items (ie; food, toiletries, pet supplies etc) you'd be spending probably about $20-$40 more on the same crap anywhere else. Especially in this city where rent and gas are so expensive, thats a huge incentive for people with familes or whatever to shop there. I have two huge hungry dogs and since I stopped buying their food in that shithole my monthly dog food bill alone has gone up about $30. The exact same brand of food at Zellers is about $5 more per bag, $7 more at Fairway, and around $10-$12 more at Safeway, Petcetera etc. Obviously some price gouging going on somewhere, as the dog food is made in Ontario. meh I dont care, they treat me like shit I will gladly pay more elsewhere, I do it for me not some poor kid that deserves better but would probably be eating dog food if he isnt earning his 12cents an hour. - Tue, 15 May 2007 11:45am | ||

It was such a good deal I bought one for work and one for non-work time. That is why I go to Wal-Mart. I don't necessarily like it, but when life is so fucking expensive already and wages aren't going up I gotta look out for me. Hong Kong is not the only place i've been in the world, and I even said that i haven't been here long enuff to really give an accurate assesment of what really is going on, but on the surface; from what i've seen hasn't been as bad as you would like to think it is. Child labor ANYWHERE is unacceptable PERIOD. But what i was trying to say is that people here aren't miserable, sad, etc... Sure they have hardships but unlike you, they dont bitch and moan about it; they live life and continue to do so under any circumstance. He promptly picked up a box of girly things and examined them like it was his sole purpose in life. I laughed at him, went to the till and paid for my purchases. Good fun. As for Walmart. | Anonymous User Info... | I live in china and have for a couple years. most chinese factory workers come from impoverished rural areas. the average chinese farmer makes 400 US dollars a year, the average chinese factory worker earns around 100 US dollars per month. Although the wages are shitty it reperesents a major improvement in the quality of life for them and their family. there's no social security in china so if your kids can't support you when you get too old to work you starve to death. I don't know why people think that most goods that come from china are produced by child labour most factory workers i know are young men and women 16-25 years old. the water in tsingtao beer comes from laoshan spring, not the pearl river. zhujiang (pearl river) beer is made from pearl river water. it's label claims it's formaldahyde free. haha. - Sat, 19 May 2007 2:49am | ||

This is where a lot of issues come up, and is why the UN should be disbanded. We aren't *insert other culture here* and to expect them to just fall to their knees and forget their own culture so they can assimilate to ours is asinine. Trev's last link is a prime example. What's not acceptable to us, is more than acceptable in another countries culture, and that's the way it should be. Just because we chose to raise cattle, and various other forms of life, to feed ourselves rather than dogs, cats or any other form of 'cute' life isn't any different. But our culture doesn't seem to have an issue with it. *shrug* I love dogs, but that's what our culture has taught us and is why it's illegal to eat it here. It's not illegal there for the same reasons we have for butchering and mistreating what we eat as food. If I were independantly wealthy I would go there and bring home as many daughters as they would let me. They pay huge money for poachers to come over here and slay bears for their guts. Even mother bears while the little cubs watch. Yeah I know every country has its own culture that often seems barbaric (sp?) to north americans but some of that is just too sick to even think about. Don't get me totally wrong, I trained in T.C.M. for three years, and I believe it can be an excellent complimentary medicine, but they take it way to far in China. I'm not meaning to sound like I'm hating on Chinese people, in fact quite the opposite. I would like to see all the peoples of the Earth live in peace and equality, but most importantly, harmony. We got upset this year when the Liberals started thinking about a couple of coal burning power plants, over a thousand came on line in China last year alone. Vancouver island could see the acid rain as a result. China's sheer size should make her take the lead in bettering the planet, yet the actions, or inactions of the Chinese government are showing the opposite.
