Hey was just wondering if anyone knows of any good vocal coaches and they dont charge an arm and a leg. I can sing, but not well enough, i think if i could get a coach i can just be killer singer. And i am learning how to scream. I have always wanted to front a band or even just be backups. i am in a band right now and i think i can do better then what i am putting out myself. Email me or just reply to this post. i have looked in the resources and it sucks - Mon, 7 May 2007 11:35pm

Check out the "Zen of Screaming" by Melissa Cross You can pick this dvd up at A & B. It has an instructional dvd and an audio CD. Amazing coach. She's worked with All that Remains, Andrew W.K, Every Time I Die, God Forbid, H20, Hazen Street, Lamb of God, Madball, Shadows Fall, Thursday, and more. - Wed, 9 May 2007 10:39pm

The kind of vocals you're looking for don't really lend themselves to proper training--they involve a little too much self-abuse in achieving volume.

My advice would be to get a cheap PA-type setup (think one powered speaker, maybe an NX550). Plug a mic in, then line your iTunes or whatever into it, then blast whatever music it is you want to influence your style of vocal-ing, then try to play with your voice and see how you can get it closer to and further from the kind of things you want it to do.

But always remember that you're not going to sound like anyone else, only like you and that the ultimate goal is just to test and get to know your voice in order to understand what your own unique sound is, become comfortable with it, and use it in the ways it's best used. That's where the sincerity will come from (in your performances).

Good luck, brah.

absolutely not true...screamers need training.
Singing is about proper technique, breathing and posture and head/ mouth position.
I would suggest you join a community choir, or contact the conservatory or Uvic about getting some private coaching. You really could get by with one good comprehensive lesson
best to rid yourself of bad habits.
No 1 mistake singers make is no support and looking up which closes the throat. Put yer chin down and try for a high note see what happens. - Fri, 11 May 2007 9:43am

Yeah, my bad, I forgot where all the sincerity in screamed vocals really comes from: vocal training!

Ian MacKaye, Skip Candelori, Wes Eisold, those guys all had vocal coaches, amirite? - Fri, 11 May 2007 8:05pm

You're an idiot, Cathedral. If you just blithely dive into screaming and growling without knowing what your doing you can make some cool sounds but you can also hurt yourself badly.

Whether you'd like to admit it or not, somewhere along the lines all famous screamers have picked up what to do and what not to do. Whether that comes with formal training or from guy's they toured with is irrelevant. The important part is they got it.

Next time you try to dismiss someone seeking instruction try to remember that, eh.

Oh, and yeah, that DVD is really good. Not neccessarily for making you better at making sound but definitely for preventing you from doing something stupid and putting you out of commission. - Sun, 13 May 2007 1:29pm

I wasn't dismissing him, I was dismissing the idiots on here who think that resonant, valuable vocal performances of that variety come on a DVD.

The vast majority of the people who were apparently involved with that vocal coach sport the good 'ole cookie monster bullshit, also known as "what the fuck did that dude just say?" You want to sound like Thursday, Hazen Street, or ALL THAT REMAINS? ROFLROFLROFLROFLROFLMAO HOLYFUCKINGSHITYOU'RESTUPID. Be my guest.

And god forbid the dude blow out his voice. It's not like lots and lots of us have done that playing in heavy bands, enjoyed every second of it, and looked back on it fondly. Hell, I consider the breakup on my voice (and there's plenty of it) the result of a sorta heavy music rite of passage. In any case, that kind of damage takes serious, long-term, prolonged abuse. You can't do it practicing once a week and playing shows once a month.

Also, please refrain from using 'blithe', or any other 50 cent buzzword, ever again. Shit makes me nauseous. - Mon, 14 May 2007 8:47am Edited: Mon, 14 May 2007 8:52am

cobain used to go into the middle of teh woods and scream until he couldnt anymore, your vocal chords are like muscles... the more you use them the stronger they will become.. life weights for an hour and than see how your arms feel. let them heal and go again, you'll notice a difference... even singing, just gotta keep at it, i used to be monotone, now I can get highs and lows and break into huge screams.. just takes work... FEEL THE BURN!! HAHA! - Sat, 19 May 2007 5:10pm

Here's a link to a web-site with how-to's on "scream singing":
http://www.wikihow.com/Scream-Sing-without-Damaging-Your-Voice

Personally I think real screaming is bad for your voice. Once you've screwed up your voice you can't go back. Better to learn proper breathing/warm-up techniques.
Good luck with it! I think you have the right idea MindlessMikeyJay! - Sat, 19 May 2007 9:57pm

Yeah, what "fine bottle of wine" said is a good idea; just keep building on it. It's all about breath control and using enough air, and staying in tune, god damn! It's hard to give advice to someone when you don't know what they sound like. I mean you could be pitchy, or you could have a unique tone, or you could be amazing and not even know it.... or you could have an absolutely hideous voice.. Anyways.... Most vocal teachers can't actually sing themselves... they just give you advice... though I haven't had a vocal lesson but I've been singing and in choirs and all that stuff my whole life.... and know people.... actually, no I had one vocal lesson but the woman stopped giving me "advice" and just got me to sing her songs I arranged.... BECAUSE I RULE.

Good luck hey? I don't think you need a vocal teacher... most people who have one sound too "trained"... most people can't really hear that but usually you can tell when someone's been taking lessons... but then again if you find someone who really works for you then go ahead. Just sing along to cd's and keep pushing it.. just not so far as to hurt yourself. Wow I really can't give advice well... pointless shinfo... - Sat, 19 May 2007 11:21pm
