My heart goes out to you Ricky, I know how close you two were. He spoke of you all the time. I just got off the phone with Jeremy's brother, and he would like to welcome all of Jeremy's friends to the hall (which the location might still change). But he asks respectfully that the Urge gathering is to be Family and close friends only.

Another local music scene icon gone. From the early days at Harpo's to not too long ago I must have exchanged a "Hey Jeremy---"Hey Bram" with him at hundreds of shows and party's. He always had a smile on his face and seemed like such a decent guy. My deepest condolences go out to Jeremy's family and close friends. - Sat, 17 Feb 2007 3:03pm

Jeremy was a great guy and familiar face at many shows over the years. Some may remember him as the ticket-taker at The Limit all those years, a rocakbilly dude who kept it real. He was a huge music fan of every genre and many consider him to be the first punk rocker in this city back at a time (77-78) when there was no such thing round here. He helped renovate Lucky Bar when it opened, had a love of vintage cars/clothes (his fashion sense was impeccable, but not in a cheesy way) and was loved by many here and Vancouver where he had lived for the last five years while working in the film industry as a carpenter/welder. I remember talking to himin the late '90s when he got a gig driving the tour bus for Blue Rodeo and he seemed stoked because the band shared his love of cowboy culture and vintage cars. I recently heard from Blue Rodeo following Jeremy's death and they were saddened by the loss, and Jim Cuddy still drives a vintage truck Jeremy hooked up for him.
He had a wicked sense of humour and smile, much like the recently departed Jay Brown he was an inteegral part of this music scene. There aren't many like him or Jay left. - Sat, 17 Feb 2007 8:57pm Edited: Sat, 17 Feb 2007 9:01pm

A close-knit group of friends, artists and musicians are mourning the loss of Jeremy Deighton, a colourful Victoria native who died unexpectedly Feb. 11 at his home in Vancouver.

He was 42.

Deighton was a man of many jobs, each of which he infused with his unique character. He chauffeured rock stars to and from concerts, drove a tour bus for acts like Blue Rodeo, and worked security at concerts.

Some remember Deighton as the rockabilly-styled gent who took tickets at the Broad Street nightclub formerly known as The Limit. He worked the door with a sly grin that was contagious and a salty tongue that never missed its mark.

"He was the type of guy who would always be very giving with his opinion on how your business should be run," said longtime friend Marcus Pollard, a concert promoter who hired Deighton to work his events dating back to the mid-1980s.

"He was no shrinking violet when it came to these things."

Deighton was also the handyman for many local nightspots, and his skills as a welder and carpenter helped shape the interior of Lucky Bar and The Limit. He was also an accredited film union member who constructed sets here and in Vancouver, where he had lived since 2002.

Deighton's sense of style, from the cars he drove to the clothes he wore to the music he liked, was pure vintage. And no matter the job, it always shone through.

Lucky Bar manager Liam Lux remembers one of his first meetings with Deighton, whom he had hired to help renovate his Yates Street venue. Lux expected a grizzled workhorse; what he got was Deighton and his velvety pompadour, a legendary coiffure both here and in Vancouver.

"He pulls up in this crazy vintage car with a pompadour with a jackhammer in his hand. I said, 'You're the handyman?' All I know is he felt pretty confident walking into Lucky Bar with a jackhammer in his hand."

If it needed work, Deighton could always be counted on to fix it. He was not a musician per se -- though he did play bass briefly in local act the Howling Breakdance Grapefruit Society -- but his love of fine craftsmanship applied to instruments as well.

Jim Cuddy of Toronto group Blue Rodeo saw first-hand Deighton's attention to detail.

Deighton had moved to Toronto in the late '90s to work for Blue Rodeo, and travelled with the band to New Orleans for the recording of its 2000 effort, The Days in Between.

"While there, he took it upon himself to painstakingly use a razor to take the top layer of paint off my guitar," Cuddy told the Times Colonist.

"It is an original '50s Telecaster that someone painted, and I think it drove him nuts to see this vintage piece of gear not returned to its original state. While we played he would work on it for four hours a day and I can still picture him bent over the guitar, diligently and carefully cleaning it up one millimetre at a time."

The local music community owes a considerable debt to Deighton, whose lifelong love of early rock 'n' roll and hot-rod culture paved the way for a generation of non-conformist kids in Victoria.

He was punk before it was described as such, Pollard said. "He wasn't one of the first punk rockers -- he was the first."

Longtime musician Steve Barrie, who met Deighton in 1978 when they were both students at Oak Bay High School, remembers his friend as a risk-taker who frequently got beaten up for looking different.

"He's a scenester from back in the day -- an original. We're talking 1979, 1980, the new wave era. At Oak Bay, back then it was a pretty brave thing. I always remembered him for that. It was taking your life into your hands (dressing weird)."

Even when he was making his own clothes, Deighton had impeccable style. His snappy collection of vintage clothing, which he altered at his mother's sewing machine, was truly one of a kind, but it was Deighton's passion and dedication to his friends and that his friends will remember.

"He was the world's biggest fan. If he loved your band, you had a friend for life; he would do anything for you," Pollard remembered. "If there was an unsung person in Victoria right there at the very beginning, that would have been Jerry."

A public celebration of Deighton's life is being held today at 1 p.m. at Alix Goolden Hall, 907 Pandora Ave.

That was a helluva sendoff for a wonderful man. He would've loved the burnouts.... Thanks everyone who worked hard to make that the Wake of all Wakes, and the best funeral procession ever.... Shiny, Ricky, Tim, Marcus, et al.

I'll miss him more than I can say. Spouse for 4 years, friend for 13. One of the first people I met when I lived in Victoria in the early 90's.... He was the coolest guy in town and I always had the hots for him.

I'm heartbroken that I didn't hear about it until a few days after the service.

He was always a larger than life character who set the pace for us all. As a teen I idolized him and as an adult I was glad we had remaind friends all these years. As this slowly sinks in I realize how much of my life has included memorable moments with Jeremy and how much I'm going to miss knowing he will be out there ready to share a beer and talk.
