This album is considered THE holy grail of thrash metal and in some ways is considered the pinnacle of metal.

For me atleast this is the best album ive ever heard in my existance and is probably the only one that will be etched upon me forever. There are no filler tracks on here, even though the standouts are Hangar 18 and Holy Wars, the rest are absolute technical beauty, few or none have been able to recreate since. In fact I listened to this album every day for a year when I got it (literally) and still after years it receives constant rotation in my cd player.

If there is one cd to buy before you die, make it this one. - Tue, 23 Jan 2007 8:45pm

No doubt this is a great album. What do you think of Mustaine's vocals? Reign in Blood will always be my
favorite thrash metal album. The guitar work on Rust in
Peace is exceptional though. - Tue, 23 Jan 2007 8:51pm

I know there is some people who arent fond of his vocals, but to me they are my favorite. I can't say that Mustaine has the most evil sounding voice, operatic etc. But it just has such a unique characteristic quality to it, hard for me to explain really. Tom Araya has this too but his was more starting to get into the extreme vocal format only to occur years later.. They are both elite vocalists however. - Tue, 23 Jan 2007 8:57pm

hanger 18 is the BIGGIST filler track, i HATE it so much, its basicly 2min of singing then 3/4min of bullshit solos

the rest of this album is good, theres better thrash our there *OTHER* then raining blood(which isnt that good), try Hell Awaits that album fucking rules and if you think the vox are to leaning to the extreme level try Show No Mercy its more like the NWOBHM

or other thrash stuff theres lots out there just dig deep - Tue, 23 Jan 2007 9:16pm

That was a joke? Hangar 18 is my favorite song of all time, so basically are you saying that there shouldn't be singing in songs and that somehow solos suck? Uh wtf? Ive heard all of those bands, Death Angel, Kreator, Overkill, Slayer you name it and this album runs circles around them. Im not really sure how you can compare something like Hell Awaits to Rust In Peace, there is no comparison. Hell Awaits is a dated above average thrash album, with the typical power chord slayer style with FUCKING ANNOYING AS HELL SOLOS. Still however its a classic album, but in no ways is a masterpiece as Rust In Peace is, there is absolutely NO comparison. And I love my extreme shit, but I guess il go back to listening to my Darkthrone and Mayhem because my musical taste is not tr00 enough lol... - Tue, 23 Jan 2007 10:12pm

hahahah

take it a little less defensively there buddy, its not like you wrote rust in piece

its a great album, but hanger 18 has a typlical boring intro then a bunch of boring "LOOK WHAT I CAN DO" show off solos, whats good about that????

and there should have been more singing and less solos, i would like that song WAY more

"I guess il go back to listening to my Darkthrone and Mayhem because my musical taste is not tr00 enough lol... "

what?

and that music isnt kvlt enough....its tr00 but not kvlt

LOLZ

and Slayer destroys Megadeth anyday. even now a days when there both there new albums suck

PS - peace sells is a way better record then rust in piece - Tue, 23 Jan 2007 11:09pm

Holy shit man, obviously im going to be defensive if that album was my life for a while. I fail to understand how that epic chord progression etc is boring, unless im smoking crack. And guess what, some people actually like solos or wait love them. The solo's on that song were almost euphoric they were so good..

Ya d00d mayhem should have killed more people and like aten more brains, than they would have been tr00 kvlt.

And no Slayer does not destroy Megadeth. South Of Heaven and Seasons In The Abyss seriously are there two really only amazing efforts and even still, their solos sound like a cat dying as well as the typical yell im angry slayer shit. System has failed pwns Christ Illusion anyday.

And ya peace sells comes close, but isnt as polished. - Tue, 23 Jan 2007 11:27pm

Chill the fuck out dude, Jeff is entitled to his opinion. I guess you'll also fucking throw a hissy fit at me for saying that Megadeth are ridiculously overrated and I find Rust in Peace average at best. Sorry. - Wed, 24 Jan 2007 2:13am

man, did you not get i was being kidding the first time

also why did you bring it up

"epic chord progression" huh how is it epic, its the most long dragging chord progression EVER

you dont think mustiane was angery, Megadeth was bulit on hatred dude, thats why he made the band to be better then Metallica because he hated them

take a chill pill, and learn that everyone doesnt have the same oppinion of you - Wed, 24 Jan 2007 9:14am

I didn't really know that defending an album I love was a crime. If you read my post I was just giving my opinion upon why I believe Rust In Peace>Hell Awaits. I guess maybe im not entitled to state how Slayers solos sound like a cat dying, apparently that is angry talking or something. It's fine that you dont enjoy Rust In Peace, but il defend what I think about it. w/e im not angry here, if I sounded as if I was, than I guess that was a mistake in my part.

And Bryan it seems you have similiar taste to jeff, which I hope is helping with your collaboration Cyborg Justice. - Wed, 24 Jan 2007 11:05am

If you are going to compare a Megadeth album to a Slayer album, it would be fair to both bands to compare albums that came out around the same time.
So, having said that...which is better?
Seasons In The Abyss or Rust In Peace?
I saw both bands on the Clash Of The Titans tour when their respective albums were out. For me, Megadeth was more exciting because of the superior guitar playing and I was a fan of Nick Menza's heavy drumming. Mustaine's vocals were never my favorite, but they were best on Rust In Peace.
Hangar 18 is the one song on that album I am sick of hearing, although it is a blast to play on Guitar Hero II. - Wed, 24 Jan 2007 1:52pm Edited: Wed, 24 Jan 2007 1:52pm

Rust in Peace was a huge step forward from the previous albums. Great fucking musicianship and songwriting. The only Megadeth album along with Countdown to Extinction that I really like. Never been a fan of Dave's vocals though...he's just missing..."balls". I agree with Mr Hell that they're way better on Countdown. And aren't guitar solo's primarily about "see what I can pull off" (or hammer on) anyway? The difference is that Marty created some of the most tasteful and well rounded leads out there in metal.

As for Slayer, I love Hell Awaits for its epicness and being the first "dark thrash" album out there when most bands were still into the standard melodic hard rock scales. Seasons in the Abyss is my other favorite. Reign in Blood is great, but as a whole never appealed to me as much as those other two. Never got into Slayer's guitar wanking though...Hanneman has more interesting ideas but their leads are never the pinnacles of their songs for me.

Dark Angel's Leave Scars is vastly underrated and will always stand in the shadow of Darkness Descends unfortunately, truly impressive.

Exodus - Bonded by Blood, I can't get enough of this album. It's kind of dated in a way but the riffs and drumming are just so awe-inspiring. "Exodus" and "No Love" are my personal highlights.

...And Justice for all will alway remain my favorite Metallica. There's just no time for any happy feelings on this one...great dark, epic, and technical songs. "Progressive thrash"? Perhaps, yes. And contrary to the general opinion, I love the dry and focused production on it. The guitar sound is amazing. Did anyone ever realize that most contemporary metal productions are way more compressed and devoid of dynamics than this particular one? No one ever seems to make an issue out of that, strangely.

Damnit, I am still waiting for the day when a rejuvenated Metallica will include "Dyers Eve" in their set list. - Tue, 30 Jan 2007 4:51pm

Never claimed that Countdown was any good. Just wanted to point that out.
Also, an interesting bit of trivia for you...Gene and the Dark Angel guys were into the trend of self scarification when they released 'Leave Scars'. Funny how bands are inspired sometimes.
Thank you.
Carry on. - Tue, 30 Jan 2007 9:00pm Edited: Tue, 30 Jan 2007 9:02pm

Well since Rust In Peace has been voted in a lot of polls pretty high up there and has garnered many acclaimed reviews and huge album sales, it must be a shit album.

Of course im guessing you havent even listened to this whole album through and just count Megadeth a knockoff of Metallica right? - Sun, 4 Feb 2007 5:12pm

no not really,i dont like dave mustaines voice its awful and its been 18(or 17) years since it came out so...thats why i say its not the pinnacle there stuff thats has come out since then that has been wayyyy better - Mon, 5 Feb 2007 9:00am

But than that's your opinion. If you take a look at the majority of Megadeth fans, 95% of them will think Rust In Peace was their biggest achievement and most of their new albums were crap.

Besides a metal album having close to three hundred reviews and five stars must mean something right?

All I'm going to say is that anybody who believes that Rust in Peace is a "technical" album should check out Control and Resistance by Watchtower (which actually predates RIP by a year) and weep at their own ignorance. - Mon, 5 Feb 2007 9:40am

Rust in Peace is one of the best albums, ever. Holy Wars, Tornado of Souls, Five Magics and Poison was the Cure are standout tracks on an album full of musical greatness.

I am interested in reading a list of albums that have come out since R.I.P. that are wayyyy better.

I can't wait to see Megadeth again on Mar 11th with Down.

If Dave opens with Holy Wars I will seriously pee my pants with delight, then keep my wet pants on all concert, and at the end I will still be wearing my dirty ol pee pants. - Mon, 5 Feb 2007 8:34pm

megadeth were really one of the top thrash bands in the 80's. exhellent riffs although i did find dave's vocals quite nasal. rust in peace i think was their last great album. everything after that was mediocre for my taste.
but as the days pass, i am looking forward to see what they will play march 11. I still really like the older albums and play them once in awhile. - Thu, 22 Feb 2007 8:14pm
