Hi,

I have a 1975 Traynor Reverb Master SC, not actually sure of the wattage. I've always liked the sound of it but thought there was a kinda muddy low sometimes, I just replaced the 3, thats right 3 tubes the amp has - 2 EL34s and 1 EL84. I replaced them with groove tubes gold series. It sounds a bit better but the lows are kinda still not so great. I heard someone mention changing the transistor caps after 20 years on an amp but don't know much about them. The speakers have no holes in them but just look really dusty and old, could they be the problem maybe? I know this is all stupid things to ask without actually hearing the amp but I'd like to hear what people know about transistor caps and if they are worth trying.

Edit: This is from the Yorkville site

Its probably the FILTER caps that they were talking about, the bleed out over time.
That was my first amp, good well built amp.
If you are using humbuckers it might just be the ten inch speakers givin you the mud...they weren't all that puchy in those amps.
just an opinion.
You can tell if your filter caps are bad, they are the things that kind of look like AA batteries, when they start to go you will se a bulge in the cap of them.

cheers

Ok, I see those. Silver cylinders with a grey thing in the middle that points out right? Do stores still sell those?

Thanks so much man! Your right tho, this is one solid amp, the wood is like an inch thick!

Its a solid amp, point to point wiring I believe still in those. It would be worth putting a little money into....try running it into a cab with 12's see if that helps.

Cool I will, Carl is the guitarist in my band! Thanks a lot. The amp is at Tempo Trends getting the filter caps done, I like those guys. They work hard for their customers. Only 2 days too, thought that was good. Come out to one of our shows sometime, or we can come out to yours! Talk to you later Steve, thanks. - Mon, 30 Oct 2006 9:50pm Edited: Mon, 30 Oct 2006 9:50pm
