I think the Canucks will be struggling to play .500 hockey this year. Don't you? - Mon, 28 Aug 2006 1:30pm

why? morrison should be healthy, the drama in the locker room should be diminished with the departure of bert, luongo in goal, a young fast puck moving potentially all-star defenseman in bourdon, the twins coming off of their best season and a new coach who says he is going to make the players accountable. i think your statement is unfounded. you might want to at least provide an argument. - Mon, 28 Aug 2006 2:03pm

I'm worried about Naslund and the injured groin. He FUCKIN BETTER have a plus/minus that isn't -17 like last season. (And Bert's -18!!!! They were BY FAR the worst pm's on the team! fucked up!)
Having a goalie - who not only can log in more minutes than most goalies but also have a .920 career save percentage - should HOPEFULLY bolster the team's confidence. I'm sure Roberto will be happier playing here than in Florida, too.
Bert was deadwood (but GODAMMN I miss how he straightarmed his way around defensemen).
I look forward to seeing Willie Mitchell plasteriing players into the boards, so, yeah - I think the Vancouver Canucks will finish second in their division this coming season and then go on to beat the Flyers for the Stanley Cup. - Mon, 28 Aug 2006 6:06pm

Here's why the Canucks will fall on their faces this year:

1. Much less experience on the blueline. Gone are Jovo and Bryan Allen (a future all-star IMO), in come Krajicek, Tremblay, Mitchell, Fitzpatrick? Ick. A thin D means an overall weak team with less wins. Luc Bourdon? If he even makes the team this season (doubtful) he won't be an impact D-man for a while. He's no Dion Phaneuf. Depth on D was an issue last year, even more so now.

2. Naslund remains the captain. I can't think of a softer captain in the entire NHL. Once called his own team chokers! This supposedly new-look team needed a new leader. Either they should have dealt him away, or handed the C to Ohlund. Naslund needs to concentrate on what he's best at.. that's scoring, not leading.

3. Luongo, the biggest wild card. One of the best goalies to be sure. Was under zero pressure in Miami, and is now seen as the latest saviour in an intense, success-starved market. The afore-mentioned problem defence will mean he'll see alot of shots. I predict the same outcome as in Florida: great save %, good GAA, and a stack of losses anyway. They don't call it the Goalie Graveyard for nothing.

4. A new coach who will no doubt give some of his pet project players from Manitoba more ice time on the Canucks than they'll deserve. This may be wise for long-term development (see the Sisters), but it means more errors and goals against. Vancouver fans are impatient and want success now, not later. Shit, a 3 game slide and the sky is falling according to most Canucks fans!

I call bullshit:

Which Bryan Allen have you been watching? I would way rather have Mitchell as a stay at home d-man. Luc Bourdon doubtful? They have made room for him to make the jump, he has the potential to back the powerplay and - from what I've read - he is less likely to give the puck away than Jovo. As for Krajicek - here is what TSN has to say about him: "Has all-star potential from the back end. Will put up points and also log loads of ice time when he becomes an NHL regular".

I don't disagree that Naslund was in a very difficult position as Captain last season. He was stuck between a rock and a hard place - the rock being the Captaincey and the hard place being his friendship with Bertuzzi. I think he will get a chance to Captain the team again, but I don't think he will keep the C if the team doesn't repsond. He knows this: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=176646&hubname=nhl

You think he had zero pressure playing under Keenan? He is the epitomy of intense - bordering on clinically insane. At this point, this argument has no merit..it isn't even worth addressing.

Ninety seven percent of season's tickets sold? I'd say the fans are pretty optimistic

Nobody knows how this will play out, but what you fail to mention is that Vigneault led the moose to the North Division finals last year. Also, he is more of a defensive minded coach than Crawford - which might help to address your "lots of shots" prediction.

Bottom line is that nobody knows how the season will play out. It is obvious after last season that the game has changed - in the minds of most, for the better. I think the Canucks have as much chance as any other team and I believe the lack of drama in the dressing room will pay huge dividends. If the players buy into a system that works and stick with it, I think they have a good chance of winning the cup.

I have always cheered for the Canucks first and I always will. If they don't make the playoffs or get eliminated, I'll cheer for any other Canadian team...except Toronto. Perhaps we'll see all you nay-sayers on the band-wagon next spring.

I thought the D was looking good this year! And with lots of depth for callups on the farm team. Apparently Nonis is still shopping for a top-6 winger, and the Sedins have gotten to the point where they make the Carter, not vice versa, so almost anyone can go on that line and do well. (Id like to see Carter back though )

Nas and Mo certainly dont need Bertuzzi, but it would be nice if Nonis could find them someone proven.. Lots of rumors have been flying on the Canucks Forum and some of the UFA's still out there are definate 1st liners.

Im really looking forward to watching Bourdon, Mitchell, Krajicek, Ohlund, Salo in the back and some of the new guys and returning youth up front ( ie: Kessler, Burrows, Reid, King, )

The Canucks are long overdue for some meaningful (playoff) success -- you fans sure deserve it for being such gluttons for punishment year after year!

Luc Bourdon has a chance to make the team, but lots of you are putting the pressure on already -- calling for him to back the power play, jump right into a fulltime NHL defensive spot.. don't hold your breath. The smart move is to get some serious pro experience in the minors, but indeed the D may be too thin and they'd need him. Management probably wouldn't want to see him NHL this year, but the coaches may insist.

Bryan Allen was a years-long project that will now pay off for someone else. Big, young, durable, nasty, heavy-hitter, and that invaluable 4-5 (?) seasons under his garter belt now. He's gonna be good.

re: coach.. the Moose lost in the league quarter-final last season -- would the Nux fans be happy with that result this year? Probably. "Good chance of winning the Cup"? Har!

If you don't want to talk goaltending, OK.. that is by far the least of your worries (barring injury - the backup's gonna have to be someone who comes cheap). The fans are expecting miracles and plenty of stolen games, so Luongo had better deliver. Maybe someone besides mica wants to talk goalies?

Oh, and thanks for the TSN footnotes mica. Those really won't be necessary though. One shouldn't need a website to back up ones claims here, however misguided!

- Allen may be tough, but how are you going to make him fast? I wasn't happy to see him go, but he definately was not indespensable and mitchell is, in my mind, an upgrade.

- Have you watched Luc Bourdon play? There is absolutely no reason why he cannot make this team. I really don't get where you're coming from on this.

- Vigneault...time will tell.

- Luongo...every cup winning team has a goalie that steals games. He is capable of doing just that.

- I think the hockey analysts at TSN might have a better bead on player potential than you and I. Well, definately you.

- So, who are you cheering for?

- For the record, although I hope the Canucks can make a run, my money is on Anaheim for the cup. - Thu, 7 Sep 2006 3:48pm

Jason King is a rookie RW who was sidelined last season with a concussion. He has decent stats, considering he was used sparingly on the 3rd line. He scored 10 goals in 6 games with the Moose after returning from the concussion.

Canucks stats: 2003-2004 47gp 12goals 9assists.. He was en route for a 20-25 goal season as a rookie.
NHL rookie of the month for November with eight goals and 11 points in 14 GP.
In 2001-02 - King led the entire Canadian Hockey League in scoring, with 63 goals.

Possible backup goalies this year are Wade Flaherty and Steve Shields who I think have both been invited to training camp.. both potentially top-notch backups.

And in other news, Kesler getting almost $2 mill with his experience/performance is retarded.

"Sources tell TSN that the Philadelphia Flyers have signed Vancouver Canucks restricted free agent forward Ryan Kesler to an offer sheet. The deal would be worth $1.9 million for one season.

The Vancouver Canucks have seven days to match this offer, but if they choose to walk away for financial reasons, the compensation paid to the Canucks for the Flyers manouever will be a 2nd round draft pick. " - Tue, 12 Sep 2006 1:24pm

good to have the faith... but its also good to be realistic ;) preseason isn't the greatest for the canucks right now, and some will argue that reg. season will take off. But, in my opinion, preseason counts as much as reg. season and playoffs. Every game should be played hard and to the highest intensity level. Preseason is also a good indication of team morale and chemistry. Right now, the canucks look like a team in the process. I dont expect much from them this season but hey a couple wins here and a couple wins there to boost confidence and then in the long run we'll have a cup competitive team. Just have patience and dont be like every other nuck fan, ie) fall off the bandwagon after the first loss :P or 'root' for anahiem :P(j/k mica) - Sat, 30 Sep 2006 2:58pm
