A totally stupid and unrepresentative name for what is essentially late period SoCal hardcore (i.e. heavy on the metal influences).

Cue angry response from Curmudgeon Rocker. . .

You totally hit the nail on the head, though.....
Despite the bands Jeff mentioned were Bostonian, p/v bands were mainly considered a left coast thing.
Tuned down guitars, cookie monster vox, superlative production values (just kidding), blast beats.
Chris Dodge's label - SlapaHam Records - was basically the progenitor (probably the last time I'll ever use tha word) of p/v. No Comment, Man is the Bastard, Spazz, and Lack of Interest are examples.

/stupid and unrepresentative name?
/hell yeah.

Wow band genres are getting to be as bad as all the conditions they come out with so they can market drugs to you. Soon every band will be a different genre. Maybe to make it easy we can just use band names as genres from now on. My new genre is "Weed Metal". It's like traditional Metal only it kinda jams out and has a bit of a stoner feel. Another good genre would be "Yellow Pants". It's like Crusty but taking it too the next level. - Thu, 6 Jul 2006 3:44pm Edited: Thu, 6 Jul 2006 3:45pm

power violance was a term coined by a group of about 9 bands in the usa (including charles bronston and capitalist casualties) to refer to a style of ethics and lyrics and a scene that they were connected to. Most powerviolance has songs under a minute, often under 30 seconds, with 3 cord power cord guitar, sceaming vocals, and verry violantly angry usually verry pollitical lyrics (good example is cost of an animal by dropdead) with exsteamly fast tempo, often using blast beats and a fuck lot of distortion. Meat Of Mankind could verry accurately be called Power Violance. PV melds tendancies of crustcore grindcore, thrash, and hardcore.

DROPDEAD is one of the best examples of Power Violance (although they are second wave) as is Capitalist Casualties, or perhapse ROT from Japan, as well I have heard people refer to Melt Banana as a mix of NOISE pop and power violance. - Fri, 7 Jul 2006 1:25am

There's already a name for that.

It's called "Black Sabbath". - Fri, 7 Jul 2006 1:22pm

FYI Rot is from Brazil. and personally i don't consider drop dead a powerviolence band at all more fast h/c or crust maybe if ya wanna get tech. Not all pv is overly political either(with exceptions) I tend to think silly song titles and blast beats mixed with fast hc and the odd doomy breakdown. On the first man is the bastard split 7inch with aunt mary they had a song that named off all the west coast pv bands and it was basically the list of bands Doug already wrote. Also I don't think Charles Bronson deserve the tag of pv cause in my opinion they just plain out suck. My old band neckbeerd wished we were powerviolence.

Neil Hamburger could very well be the powerviolence of comedy. - Sun, 15 Oct 2006 1:57am

Man I remember back in highschool a few freinds got me into Acrid, I think I had a 45 , that and a band called Jihad. At the time I don't remember it being called Power Violence, but then again I didn't know Acrid was Canadian.
Agressive shit none the less. - Sun, 15 Oct 2006 11:25am

well dropdead sounds pretty much like capitalist casualties, and from what I read tryed to have a sound like the first pv bands, as well I believe they concider themselves pv. - Mon, 16 Oct 2006 12:42am

If ya wanna get really nitpicky I'd say the vox are quite different between those two bands. CC had way more trade-off vox going on too, between their singer (forgot his name) and Jeff Robinson the bassist. I suppose though DD has shades of pv. - Mon, 16 Oct 2006 7:48am
