Apart from diving (which also happens in hockey), footy is fucking awesome. I was thinking of getting a large sheet of paper to put up on my van's back window, saying "GO TOGO!"
Mexico just beat Iran 3-1.
I was hoping some of Argentina's strikers would get injured simply for the reason of seeing Aguero getting the chance to play. The little fucker's only 17 and he is the future of football. (btw: the remainder of this thread should use "football" or "footy" or as THE term of reference.) I will stand toe to toe with anyone about Aguero. Sure, Messi - who's only 18 - is sensational, but fifteen years from now I'll bet Aguero will have a more memorable career.

What a fucking joke. I'd red card the whole damn tournament. After what happened to Australia I cannot watch anymore.Europeans are a bunch of whiney diving babies. How anyone can watch this garbage let alone make it the number one sport in the world blows my mind. The only reason it's the number one sport is cause it's cheap to play and all the poor people of the world can partake. If the players start throwing punches instead of cheap ass head butts, if the refs can do their jobs without corruption, if the players can stop cheap shots and diving, and if Canada can ever get in, then maybe I'll watch again. For now I'll just sit back and watch Dave Nonis put together a new Canucks team, and wait patiently for October

Nutty, whack, prediction-time:

tomorrow: Germany 5, Italy 1.
Wednesday: France 2, Portugirl, 0. (sorry, Tony)
Saturday: Portugal 1, Italy 0.
Sunday: France beats Germany 4/5 in shoot out. Ballack, bowing out of the previous game, will suffer one of the most grotesgue injuries in World Cup history: comparable to Joe Theisman's fuckin gross injury, Ballack will collide in a sloppy challenge with..........let's say Figo, where Ballack's femur will completely snap into a compound fracture as bone sticks out of his leg, and the lower half of his calf - as he tries to point it up - dangles, or more like droops back downwards (a u-turn of flesh, you could say), in a sort of Dali-esgue kinda droopiness. Upon viewing this on the big stadium screen, the crowd of 80,000 react in a mass sorta revulsion, with mass pukings going on everywhere, to the extent that the stadium (only fifteen minutes into the game) takes on that Superdome-one-month-after-Katrina kinda bouquet........but pukier.

personally i cant stand Italy's defensive posture, just boring to watch a dump and chase on the pitch(theres no place for it in hockey and theres no place for it here). Portugal, i just hate christiano ronaldo... that little bitch whines at every fucking call made, and has an ear-ring that i would glady rip out at moments notice just to see the tear out of his crying eye.
as my predictions, Germany handled Argentina quite handely once they figured out that the defence wasn't as potent as thier offence. Now, with Italy's defensive capabilities and Buffon in net... hopfully ze Germans remember how to take walls down, cause if they cant score early and force italy to become more offensive which might create holes that Germany are excellent at taking, then we could see another penalty kick decision.
With the other side of the draw set, France and Portugal... My call is France wipes the shit out of Portugal. Think about it, former world cup champs, miss out the last elimination round('02) and finally they scrape their way into the elimination... and what do we see? a renewed offense from Henry(finally) and Zidane is finally taking charge, and Bartez finally stopping shots and not fancying himself infront of a mirror. Looking much like the team that won the cup!(but hopfully not this time around). With all that being said

GO GERMANY GO!!!!!!!!!

I'll assume, as a Germany fan, you'll actually take the time to watch Italy play today. You'll be surprised to notice that their "defensive posture" is arguably the most controlled and composed in the world. It's actually quite remarkable how calmly players like Cannavaro and Zambrotta clear the ball out of their own area. The ball rarely leaves the ground when they outlet to the midfield.

Anyways... kick-off in 25 minutes. Observe. - Tue, 4 Jul 2006 11:34am

Hate on their "posture" all you like. It is their style and they are sticking with it. Make the other team pay for allowing a goal and frustrate the shit out of them for 73 minutes or whatever the time might be. Truly satisfying to watch for a half-WOP like me. - Tue, 4 Jul 2006 4:04pm

According to Wikipedia: Regarding the substance of the argument, Zidane's agent Alain Migliaccio said, "[Zidane] told me Materazzi said something very serious to him but he wouldn't tell me what." Several papers have had lipreaders try to interpret what Materazzi said, although they have come up with some very different interpretations. The deaf forensic lip-reader Jessica Rees was employed to analyze the video sequences with the help of an Italian translator. Another such analysis was carried out by French lip-reader Marianne Frère. According to these reports, Materazzi spoke in Italian - a language understood by Zidane due to his time spent with Juventus F.C. - and told him: "Hold on, wait, that one's [referring to the pass] not for a feccia [i.e. 'shit', 'scum'] like you." Zidane then reacted to Materazzi picking his shirt, and allegedly said that, if Materazzi really wanted to have his shirt, he could have it afterwards. It is unclear what he specifically said and if he told Materazzi to stop picking his shirt beforehand. Materazzi allegedly replied: "I'd rather take the shirt off your wife." As the players walked forward, he reportedly added: "We all know you are the son of a terrorist whore." Then, just before the headbutt, he is seen saying: "Vaffanculo" (i.e. 'fuck off').

Earlier claims about Materazzi having called his opponent a "dirty terrorist" have been denied by Materazzi, who reportedly said: "It is absolutely not true, I did not call him a terrorist. I'm ignorant. I don't even know what the word means." According to the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Materazzi recounted the incident as follows: "I held his shirt for a few seconds only, then he turned to me and talked to me, jeering. He looked at me with a huge arrogance and said: 'If you really want my shirt, I'll give it to you afterwards'. I replied with an insult, that's true." He repeatedly denied the accusation that the comment was racist in nature. He also denied insulting Zidane's mother, saying: "I certainly didn't talk about Zidane's mother" because to him "the mother is sacred". Zidane's mother had been taken ill to hospital hours before the World Cup final. According to Materazzi, it was "the type of insults that we've heard before so many times on the pitch, and sometimes we don't even notice it".

In an interview Zidane said that he would reveal what Materazzi said after a few days, as soon as he felt comfortable with it. (Verdens Gang, 11th July 2006, page 2, sports part of the newspaper) France defender William Gallas was adamant Zidane was provoked into the headbutt. "I didn't see it but sometimes football is not only with the ball, sometimes when you have a player who is very clever and says something to you then maybe you are angry and want to 'kill' that player. Maybe, and I say maybe, he has made a mistake." - Tue, 11 Jul 2006 10:46am Edited: Tue, 11 Jul 2006 10:49am

He's not a turd. He lost his head and did somethign stupid. He got sent off and, if he ever played another game in international play, would have earned himself a few games suspension. Regardless of provocation, you don't do that shit in soccer. But some dudes lose their cool and pay the price and have to live with it. The end.

I can't fucking believe what a big deal everybody's making about this. It doesn't matter a goddamn what Materazzi said. Zidane was punished appropriately, and his reasons don't fucking matter. If Materazzi said something, that can be dealt with however FIFA sees fit. But it's not a moral either/or. What Materazzi said doesn't change what Zidane did.

I've heard people say Italy should give back the World Cup if Materazzi said something. That's a load of fucking bullshit. I'm also heard peple claim that there's no way Materazzi could have said something racist, and that never happens in soccer. Even bigger load of bullshit. - Wed, 12 Jul 2006 5:32pm

He lost his cool near the end of a crucial game that was to decide the winner of the World Cup, possibly costing his team the shootout win (we'll never know, but one can speculate what may have happened if Zidane took the shot that missed?). Plus it was his last game...tarnishing your career over one headbutt is a turd-brained thing to do, in my opinion.
Yeah, he is one of the best, but he is also a turd.
I'm glad Italy won. I'm glad Zidane lost his cool.
Thanks Zidane, you turd. - Thu, 13 Jul 2006 5:36pm

You're not in a boxing ring, you idiot. Soccer doesn't involve headbutting.
On top of that, you lost the game for your team with your impulsive reaction.

Actually I meant to lose the game for the team because I think Thierry Henry is a fucking moor. And he's taller than me. And besides, it doesn't hurt to practice the ol' freestyle Hiemlich once in a while.

/I am reminded of Zizu stomping on a Saudi Arabian player in the '98 World Cup.
/actually come to think of it - isn't that what Rooney did too, to get red-carded and lose it for Britain? And in the groin, at that. - Thu, 20 Jul 2006 7:13pm Edited: Thu, 20 Jul 2006 7:23pm

I stand corrected about who lost it for Britain. Not Rooney. It was Joe Cole, who had a golden opportunity - from only seven yards out - to convert an easy cross. Even I could have done it on acid after having just seen a Christopher Cross concert. A major shame for me cuz he's been my favourite Chelsea player (Cole, that is) ever since he came over from Tottenham. Lampard and Terry are cool too (except Terry's WC blunder against Equador and come to think of it Lampard's TONS of missed chances), but there's not a lot of players who can move the ball and deek like Cole. That kinda finesse where it looks like the ball is attached to the foot. He's been inconsistent though, except, however, for the majority of last season - Morinho had confidence in him and played him quite a bit.
Awesome-est World Cup moment: Fabien "Don't You Fucking Call Me Donald Pleasance" Barthez spilling an EASY ball that went to some opposing striker (can't rmember who) who blew an equally easy chance to score. As play resumed, the cool technicians showed a replay of an angry (and WAY better goalie) Gregory Coupet sitting on the bench, his arms folded, and then sticks one clawed hand out, grasping, frantically, all over the place, while one of the commentators makes a wonderfully apropos reference to window-washing. The only thing I've seen Donald Pleasance do well is boot the ball really fucking far.
/last time I'll ever use the word "apropos". - Fri, 21 Jul 2006 9:50pm Edited: Fri, 21 Jul 2006 10:00pm
